Billy Graham’s Daily 27 November 2017 Devotional: Realities of Life

Topic: Realities of Life [Monday November 27, 2017]

Casting down imaginations . . . and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ. — 2 Corinthians 10:5

Thousands of people have made plans to escape from the realities of life. A new word has come into common usage the last few years. That word is “escapism.” The dictionary defines it as “a retreat from reality into an imaginary world.” The escape of imagination. Solomon spoke of the unregenerate heart as one which is inclined to excessive fantasy.

The dream world Satan promotes always ends with disillusionment. Thousands of people live in an unreal dream world, while shirking their responsibilities toward their families and toward God. The Bible teaches that with Christ in your heart, you can face the realities of life. Even though they are hard, the grace of God will give you greater joy and pleasure than any dream world to which you try to escape.

Prayer for the day: Lord, so often my thoughts make a wasteland of what You are wanting to plant there. This day let every one of them be captive to Your leading.

Written by Billy Graham, Founder of Billy Graham Evangelistic Association(BGEA). BGEA exists to proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ by every effective means and to equip the church and others to do the same.

Christianity is a faith with a long and detailed history, with numerous events of lasting significance occurring throughout the ages.

Each week brings the anniversaries of great milestones, horrid tragedies, amazing triumphs, telling tribulations, inspirational progress, and everything in between.

Here are just a few things that happened this week, Nov. 26 – Dec. 2, in Church history. They include the death of an abolitionist, the call to crusade, and the birth of CS Lewis.

Memorise: Neglect not the gift that is in thee, which was given thee by prophecy, with the laying on of the hands of the presbytery. – 1 Timothy 4:14

Read: Acts 14:21-23 (KJV)

21 And when they had preached the gospel to that city, and had taught many, they returned again to Lystra, and to Iconium, and Antioch,

22 Confirming the souls of the disciples, and exhorting them to continue in the faith, and that we must through much tribulation enter into the kingdom of God.

23 And when they had ordained them elders in every church, and had prayed with fasting, they commended them to the Lord, on whom they believed.

Bible in One Year: Psalm 63-68, Micah 4:6-5:6, Hymn: Sing Hymn 18 – Onward Christian Soldier

MESSAGE:

True leadership makes room for fresh leaders to be raised and imparted. One leader who succeeded in raising several other leaders was Paul. In Romans 1:11-12, he wrote to the believers in Rome, expressing his longing and sincere desire to be with them in order to impart some spiritual gifts to them. There is no better way to deploy the ministry of impartation than through fasting, prayer and laying on of hands. One of Paul’s spiritual sons who benefited from the ministry of impartation was Timothy. When hands were prayerfully laid on him, Timothy received some spiritual gifts. We see Paul reminding him of these gifts when in 1 Timothy 4:14 he said:

“Neglect not the gift that is in thee, which was given thee by prophecy, with the laying on of the hands of the presbytery.”

Through impartation, there can be transfer of spiritual gifts from a man of God to the one being prayed for. Note also that fasting plays a key role in this. As leaders, when workers, ministers and other leaders are being raised, before they are commissioned into service, it is important to support them through the ministry of impartation backed by fasting and prayers.

“And when they had ordained them elders in every church, and had prayed with fasting, they commended them to the Lord, on whom they believed.”Acts 14:23

After Paul and Barnabas had taken the gospel to several cities during their first missionary journey, they revisited these cities, appointing leaders over the churches they established there. It is worthy of note that in doing these, prayer and fasting were given prominence. This is why it is quite surprising to see some brethren who are slated for ordination engaged in normal activities as if there is nothing at hand, instead of separating themselves to prayer and fasting. In any case, the level of preparation before a spiritual activity will determine the extent of the blessings received by each person. Even for regular services in your local assemblies, it is important to prepare before attending such meetings. Whenever you want to prepare for any programme, do not forget to embrace fasting and praying.

Key Point: Preparation for a spiritual programme may mean seeking God’s face towards the programme, forgiving and releasing offenders from your heart, avoiding distractions, and so on.

Hymn 18: Onward Christian Soldier

1. Onward, Christian soldiers, marching as to war,
With the cross of Jesus going on before.
Christ, the royal Master, leads against the foe;
Forward into battle see His banners go!

Refrain:
Onward, Christian soldiers, marching as to war,
With the cross of Jesus going on before.

2. At the sign of triumph Satan’s host doth flee;
On then, Christian soldiers, on to victory!
Hell’s foundations quiver at the shout of praise;
Brothers, lift your voices, loud your anthems raise.
Refrain:

3. Like a mighty army moves the church of God;
Brothers, we are treading where the saints have trod.
We are not divided, all one body we,
One in hope and doctrine, one in charity.
Refrain:

4. Crowns and thrones may perish, kingdoms rise and wane,
But the church of Jesus constant will remain.
Gates of hell can never ’gainst that church prevail;
We have Christ’s own promise, and that cannot fail.
Refrain:

5. Onward then, ye people, join our happy throng,
Blend with ours your voices in the triumph song.
Glory, laud, and honor unto Christ the King,
This through countless ages men and angels sing.
Refrain:

Rasmussen’s article “The Gospel According to Michael Porter” in Institutional Investor explains the tension between value investors who emphasize institutional power and those who emphasize the numbers. The former is championed by Harvard’s Professor Michael Porter and the latter was championed by Benjamin Graham.

When most of today’s executives think of competitive advantage, they tend to think of Porter’s five forces: bargaining power of…

I don’t understand Trump’s Christian support

Speaking during ITV’s Peston on Sunday, Most Rev Justin Welby also rebuked the US President over his “completely unacceptable” views about women.

Asked his opinion about Mr Trump’s following among “fundamentalist” believers, the Anglican leader answered: “I really, genuinely, do not understand where that is coming from.”

An exit poll published after last year’s US Presidential election by the Pew Research Center suggested that 81-per-cent of people identifying as ‘white, born-again, evangelical Christians’ chose Mr Trump over Hillary Clinton.

Quizzed over whether he would attend any UK state dinner held in Donald Trump’s honour, Archbishop Welby said he would not shun the event, adding “the odds are, it would be unlikely I’d do more than shake hands with him.”

The US leader is set to visit Britain early next year however the initial state visit he was promised is being scaled back, amid speculation such a formal welcome could trigger mass protests.

Archbishop Justin said: “Part of the job [as Archbishop] is to meet people you disagree with and to testify of the love of Christ to them, and to seek to draw them into a different way.”

Controversy surrounding alleged comments made by the US…

Grace off the menu for Guides

While acknowledging that it “may be traditional to say or sing grace before a meal” during a residential event, the advice urges leaders to consider “how this might make members who are from a different faith, or have no faith, feel.”

It recommends: “If you’d like to say something before a meal, try to think of a statement that doesn’t make reference to any particular god or faith.

“For example, ‘let’s all take a moment to show gratitude for this food and to remember how fortunate we are to have this meal’.”

The idea was dismissed by one member of the Church of England’s General Synod governing body as “absolute nonsense”.

Alison Ruoff also told the Mail on Sunday: “The Guides are being very foolish in trying to whitewash Christianity, and they must not.”

Concerning singing, the ‘Including all faiths at residential events’ guidelines suggest lyrics to faith-based songs could be altered out of consideration for members who follow a different religion.

Chief executive Julie Bentley told the Mail that Girlguiding has “always been open to girls of all faiths and none” and the charity had revised its advice in light of changes to its pledge.

The Promise states: Although we may have different languages, cultures and beliefs, each member makes a commitment to do her best… to develop her spiritual side – whatever she believes or cares about, and to respect the beliefs of others.

Formerly known at the Girl Guides…
