New chapel services for gay Cambridge students

Three colleges – King’s, Trinity and St John’s – are now offering the ceremonies, which were hailed by one campus chaplain as offering “safe, sacred space”.

Rev Carol Barrett Ford from St John’s was said she was holding an Open Table service catering for LGBT people after noticing “a desire to actively promote inclusion in the Chapel”.

The Open Table movement describes itself as an “ecumenical Christian worship community which offers a warm welcome to people who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer / questioning, intersex, asexual”.

Meanwhile, three “inclusive” chapel services are being held at King’s College this term by Chaplain Rev Andrew Hammond who wants to welcome everyone, regardless of their sexuality or gender identity.

He told the Varsity student newspaper: “I wanted to do something that was very, very different, but still cohered with the general values of the place.”

Explaining his view that church teaching on gender identity and sexuality needs to change, Rev Hammond said the “quality of the love, not the gender of the lovers” matters.

British missionary slain after singing hymn

Dr David Donovan said Ian Squire from Shepperton in Surrey was trying to cheer up his fellow captives before a gang member opened fire.

The former Gp from Cambridgeshire told the Daily Telegraph: “We didn’t see who did it, but it was obvious that someone in the gang had shot him.

“It was terrifying to see.”

Mr Squire, Dr Donovan and his wife Shirley, and Alanna Carson were kidnapped in Nigeria’s southern Delta area in the middle of the night on 13th October.

The group were dragged from their beds, taken away on a speedboat and kept in a shack built on stilts above a remote swamp.

Dr Donovan said he and the two other remaining missionaries were left with Mr Squire’s body for the rest of the day after he was killed.

He speculated that a member of the gang may have murdered Mr Squire after panicking that sounds from his music may alert people to their presence.

Amazing Grace, which was written by the 18th century slave trader-turned preacher John Newton, was the only song Mr Squire knew by heart.

It had previously been reported that Mr Squire, a 57-year-old optician from Shepperton who ran his own Christian eyesight charity, had passed away after suffering from an asthma attack.

Dr Donovan said he was told that their captors, members of the Egbesu gang, released them after three weeks following a ransom paid by the Nigerian government.

Paying tribute to Mr Squire, Dr Donovan said: “Ian was hungry to know more of…

Christian school ejects male teacher over boyfriend

Craig Campbell was told his views on same-sex relationships were incompatible with the ethos of South Coast Baptist College near Perth in Western Australia.

It is understood Mr Campbell, who attended the college as student, told senior colleagues about his relationship after posting what was described as a “suggestive” picture on social media.

Principal Des Mitchell was quoted by the Western Australian newspaper as saying: “The image he posted created interest in his personal life, including his sexuality.

“I shared with him that, at present, there is an inconsistency with his beliefs on sexuality and the college’s beliefs.”

Mr Campbell said his struggle to keep his boyfriend a secret from the college was made more difficult when three pupils arrived at the wedding of his aunt.

Craig Campbell/Twitter

He told the gay and lesbian website, Out in Perth: “I told them [colleagues] I was in a relationship, and obviously this is something that I believe is fine from both a moral and a theological standpoint”.

Mr Campbell also said hiding his same-sex relationship contradicted with his desire to instill values like honesty in his pupils and to see them live their own lives free of discrimination.

Disagreement exists in Australia over whether exemptions afforded religious organisations under Western Australia’s anti-discrimination laws should be removed.

Sunday schools ‘should be monitored’

Colin Diamond at Birmingham City Council claimed church lessons and other places of informal places of learning should be regulated in a similar way to formal schools, to manage children’s exposure to “non-mainstream societal values”.

Speaking with the Times Education Supplement, he said of Sunday schools and sessions run for children at mosques: “These are classrooms by any other name.

“They are large groups of children.

“I do wish the government would grasp this stingy old nettle.”

Mr Diamond was appointment head of education at Birmingham Council in the wake of claims a small number of the city’s schools were being influenced by extreme Islamist ideology.

The so-called Trojan horse affair in 2013 prompted Ofsted to implement new rules, which places greater emphasis on leadership, management and the promotion of British values in UK schools.

Mr Diamond said there should be a change in the law to ensure Sunday schools and madrassas are regulated, adding that he understands the Department for Education is considering the idea.

Mr Diamond added: “Thousands of kids in this city will go to education spaces this evening and will be there for a few hours and will be taught about Koranic values or Christian values.

“We feel they should be regulated.”

In April 2016, Christian groups including the Evangelical Alliance said plans for Sunday schools to be forced to register with Ofsted and undergo inspections amounted to…

Crucified cow church display ‘satanic’

A bull was nailed to a cross and covered with silicone paint to create the mould which was named ‘Holy Cow’ by its creator, artist Tom Herck.

The display inside St John the Baptist of Kuttekovenin the Belgian town of Borgloon was branded a “satanic image and a disgusting insult to God” by the Katholiek Forum campaign group.

Members burned images of the display and staged a protest outside church where banners reading “stop blasphemy and degenerate art” were waved.

Tom Herck

A statement issued by the local Catholic diocese and seen by Lifesitenews.com said: “The diocese of Hasselt is astonished at the ‘Holy Cow’ exhibition in the church of Kuttekoven.

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=/pNfCPT-Zl8c]

“We are always ready to collaborate in dialogue with art projects in a church, and we can certainly appreciate humour.

“But a cow on the cross, on the spot where Christ hung on the cross, that is to our mind really a bridge too far.”

Katholiek Forum

Mr Herck said his creation sought to highlight the number of Belgian churches standing empty and the wastefulness of modern consumerism.

The model of the cow carcass is surmounted above a shallow pool containing 5,000 litres of milk.

The diocese was accused by Katholiek Forum of being “inconsistent” by criticising the exhibition but failing to intervene directly.

What Are the Warning Signs of Magnesium Deficiency?

Reuters/Kim Hong-JiPeople who often experience muscle cramping may already be suffering from magnesium deficiency.

Women suffer from different kinds of mineral deficiency without even realizing it. With the many different signs that could point to different kinds of deficiencies, it is crucial for women to identify what these symptoms are specifically saying.

Magnesium is one of the most important minerals that women could already be lacking in their bodies. It plays a vital role in producing energy, maintaining nerve and muscle function, and promoting bone strength, among others. It is not enough, however, to know its functions; it is equally important to know if one is already lacking in magnesium.

There are five telltale signs that are telling the body that it needs more magnesium, and one of which is high blood pressure (BP). If the BP shoots up more frequently than ever, it could be a sign that your body is aching for more magnesium.

The American Heart Association reported that people who took magnesium supplements experienced the lowering of their blood pressure, as against those who did not take supplements. In addition, the Association also noted that taking magnesium supplements is one of the cheapest alternatives to lowering BP.

If one is experiencing muscle cramps more often, it could also be a sign of magnesium deficiency. Muscle cramps are experienced by women not only after strenuous physical activity but also during pregnancy.

Another sign is having an irregular heartbeat. Magnesium also helps maintain a regular heartbeat and the lack of the mineral will likely cause it to…

Notable Voices and the Week in Review: November 25, 2017

Earlier this week at ThomRainer.com:

6 Guidelines for Social Media Integrity — Aaron Earls

In a desire to grow their “brand” and broaden their influence—or possibly because they don’t know any better—some church leaders have become known for taking the work of others and passing it off as their own. Others have frequently shared information or news stories that are false. Here are some general rules to help maintain your integrity online.

3 Ways Social Media Helps Your Outreach Efforts — Marty Duren

Social media is the easiest, most effective way to promote your outreach efforts that exists today. Please don’t overlook it. What are some benefits? Here are three.

A Call for Patient Evangelism — Caleb Greggsen

We know Christians are called to take the gospel to the nations, yet often it’s challenging to get people motivated about evangelistic work in faraway places. Perhaps this is why pastors assume that what their church members need is more excitement about the spiritual results of missions. They need to see how thrilling it is when men and women step out of a culture where Christianity is totally alien, and into the kingdom of light. So why not use whatever means possible to excite churches with those images?

28 Non-Numerical Signs Of A Healthy Church — Karl Vaters

I’ve been compiling a list. It started as 6 or 7. But it keeps growing. As of today, it has 28 elements. I’ve been waiting until the list was complete to publish it, but I’ve come to…

Joyce Meyer’s Daily 25 November 2017 Devotional: God Knows We Can’t Be Perfect

Joyce Meyer's Daily 25 November 2017 Devotional: God Knows We Can't Be Perfect

Topic: God Knows We Can’t Be Perfect [Saturday November 25, 2017]

In Whom, because of our faith in Him, we dare to have the boldness (courage and confidence) of free access (an unreserved approach to God with freedom and without fear). — Ephesians 3:12

There are many people who are so afraid of making a mistake they don’t do anything. Instead, they sit around saying, “What if I’m wrong? What if I miss God?”

Do you know what God told me one time? He said, “If you miss Me, I’ll find you.”

If we are wandering off somewhere and not sure where we are, we can just lift up our hands and say, “Jesus, come and get me! I’m confused. I think I made a wrong decision.”

God knows we cannot be perfect, so He sent His Son as a perfect sacrifice for us. Now we’re pressing toward the mark of perfection. In Philippians 3, the apostle Paul talks about pressing forward to what lies ahead and forgetting about the past.

God is calling you to press forward today. Stop living in fear of making mistakes, because everyone makes mistakes, period. God is not asking you to not make mistakes. He’s calling you to press forward, trusting Him to lead you. He’s asking you to call upon Him. Don’t live in fear of your imperfection. Live with faith in God’s perfect plan for you.

Prayer Starter: God, I don’t want to live paralyzed by fear of my imperfection and my mistakes. Help me to keep my focus on You. I know that when I call out to You, You will help me press forward to the mark of perfection.

TREM’s Daily 25 November 2017 Devotional by Dr. Mike Okonkwo – Expect Only Good

TREM’s Daily 25 November 2017 Devotional by Dr. Mike Okonkwo - Expect Only Good

Topic: Expect Only Good — Saturday November 25, 2017.

“He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things?” (Romans 8:32 KJV)

If God spared not His Son, why will He keep back what He has prepared for you? Therefore, the question today is: Are you preparing for good or evil? When you prepare for the good, you will attract good. So be a “good magnet”. When you wake up in the morning, confess good and expect good. The Bible says in Proverbs 23:18 (KJV) “For surely there is an end, and thine expectation shall not be cut off.” Good will knock at your door. Only goodness is permitted to follow you. No evil can hold you down. Ever before any evil arrives, God had already completed everything about you.

God does not abandon His project. There is no surprise from the pit of hell. He completed you before you even came into being. When you see people stand tall in spiritual things, it is because of what they know. Daniel 11:32 tells us that the people that do know their God shall be strong and do exploits. So dig into the word of God and know Him, so you can stand tall and chest out in Him.

Whatever your situation, understand that you are not alone and you cannot be abandoned. God is by you, with you and for you. God began it, it was not your idea. If He began it, He will finish it. So go to bed and trust the God that began this work to perfect it because He is God and God alone. Don’t bother about the evil-doers. You are in Christ. Before they can get to you, they have to go through God and Christ. Fear not because you are in Christ. If you don’t stand your ground, they will make a mess of your faith. So much occultism is parading our world today. So believers must stand their ground for God and He will show up for you. Your tomorrow is bright and your destiny is colourful. Enjoy the goodness of God. I bless you today.
