Pastors’ Warning That They Are Heavily Armed, Ready to Use ‘Deadly Force’ Stirring Heated Debate

A Florida church that posted a controversial warning that its pastors are “heavily armed” and ready to use “deadly force” continues stirring debate online two weeks after the mass slaughter at a church in Texas.

Senior Pastor Rodney Howard-Browne of the River at Tampa Bay Church posted on Instagram following the Texas shooting the sign on his church doors, where the pastors warn: “We are heavily armed — any attempt will be dealt with deadly force — yes we are a church and we will protect our people.”

Associate Pastor Allen Hawes told the Tampa Bay Times last week that the physical sign has been in place for over a year.

“It is a deterrent,” Hawes explained.

“Look at what is going on. In the past two months, look at what happened in Texas. Look at what happened in Las Vegas. Because we are a church that is on television, we are very involved in the community. We want people to know that this is a safe zone,” he added, referring to the string of mass shootings in America in recent months.

Hawes revealed that he has a concealed weapons permit, and that many of the 1,200-plus congregants are armed.

Former priest accused of abuse ‘fled out of cowardice and stupidity’

Andrew Soper (also known as Father Laurence Soper) said his whole life had been “ruined” by the allegations over to his time as headmaster and senior priest at fee-paying St Benedict’s School in Ealing, west London.

While on police bail over accusations dating back to the 1970s and 80s, Soper went on the run in Kosovo – but was extradited back to England face trial at the Old Bailey.

Ten former pupils have made allegations against him, including that he used the cane as a ruse to sexually assault and rape them.

Jane Humphryes, QC, defending, asked the defendant: “Have you ever sexually assaulted any of the complainants from this trial?”

The former Ealing abbot replied: “Never.”

His lawyer asked him to explain why he fled Rome for Kosovo while under investigation by police in Britain in 2011.

He said: “My stupidity and cowardice and wishing to bury my head in the sand played a big part.

“If you want to destroy a priest, vicar, anybody, all you have to do is make an accusation up against them. Their future is ruined, their character is ruined.

“Their past is ruined because the whole thing is re-interpreted – everything you have done in the past and tried to do for good – in sexual terms. You must have been in it for something.

“By the time I fled on March 4 2011, I had been on police bail for six months and I had a phone call from a solicitor in England saying I was going to be re-bailed for another three months.

“The pressures I suppose on anybody being on…

MIAMI — The Christian Post recently join Cross Catholic Outreach as they gathered in South Florida to pack Box of Joy gifts for children around the world. James Cavnar, president of the organization, revealed that he was inspired by Samaritan’s Purse to approach Catholic churches to follow in the evangelical organization’s footsteps during the holidays.

Operation Christmas Child is a popular evangelism tool used by Samaritan’s Purse during Christmas to help provide gifts to children in need. Cross Catholic Outreach modeled their program, Box of Joy, after the same format and fills shoeboxes with gifts for less fortunate children.

This year, Cross Catholic Outreach will send an estimated 60,000 boxes to children in Nicaragua, Guatemala, Dominican Republic and Haiti.

During a candid conversation with Cavner, the leader of this initiative explained that an employee of his was once part of assisting Samaritan’s Purse during the holidays and gave him the idea to approach bishops and leaders in the Catholic Church to model after their generosity.

There are now more than 300 Catholic groups, parishes and schools…

Charlie Rose and the epidemic of sexual immorality

“This is a moment that demands a frank and honest assessment about where we stand and more generally the safety of women. Let me be clear: There is no excuse for this alleged behavior. It is systematic and pervasive.”

With these emotional words, Norah O’Donnell reported Tuesday morning that Charlie Rose, her colleague at CBS This Morning, had been suspended after eight women accused him of sexual misconduct. The network fired Rose yesterday afternoon. PBS canceled his show shortly thereafter.

Meanwhile, the longest-serving member of the House of Representatives is facing an ethics investigation.

John Conyers has been representing Michigan’s thirteenth congressional district in Washington since 1965. Now reports allege that he paid over $27,000 to settle a complaint from a woman who claimed she was fired from his staff because she rejected his sexual advances.

Other staff members stated that they witnessed Conyers touching female staffers inappropriately and requesting sexual favors. The congressman has denied the charges: “I expressly and vehemently denied the allegations made against me, and continue to do so.”

This after Sen. Al Franken was accused of inappropriate conduct by a second woman. Senate candidate Roy Moore continues to deny numerous allegations of sexual misconduct.

This morning’s New York Times reports that Pixar co-founder John Lasseter will take a “six-month sabbatical” after unspecified “missteps” that made some employees feel “disrespected or uncomfortable.” In recent weeks, more than thirty men have been accused of sexual immorality.

According to a new poll, a third of women say they have been sexually harassed or abused at work. What will it take for such horrific behavior to stop?

    How we got here

Our postmodern culture has decided that all truth is personal and subjective (except the claim that truth is personal and subjective, of course). In a society that denies objective meaning, people cannot…

Justin Welby and Russian Patriarch state support for persecuted church

Archbishop Justin and Patriarch Kirill wrote in a joint statement that they: “Thank God for the opportunity to meet in Moscow in order to with one voice before the entire world bear witness to our brothers and sisters who are persecuted for faith in Christ.”

Referencing the Middle East and Africa, they said mass killings, destructions of churches and the forcing of Christians out of their homes were all factors contributing to devastating persecution.

During the three-day visit, the two leaders cited Bible verses for support such as 1 Corinthians 12:26: “If one member suffers, all suffer together with it: if one member is honoured, all rejoice together with it.”

Archbishop Justin and Patriarch Kirill also suggested: “We ought not to forget preventative measures against the ideology of extremism that has spread throughout the world under the influence of militants like an epidemic.

“We call upon the world’s religious and political leaders to unite in their efforts to come up with an effective response to extremism.”

The church leaders called for international leaders to speedily help refugees and those facing no guarantee of security because of war through interreligious dialogue.

Ohio Church Expecting to Feed 2,400 Needy on Thanksgiving

(Photo: StoneBridge Church)Volunteers at StoneBridge Church in Findlay, Ohio help prepare meals for the annual free community Thanksgiving meal.

An Ohio congregation is planning to serve approximately 2,400 meals this Thanksgiving for those in need, exceeding the number of dinners from past years.

StoneBridge Church of Findlay will host the annual community event on Thanksgiving Day, with meal options including dine-in, drive-thru and delivery.

Kelly Galer, operations manager with StoneBridge Church, explained to The Christian Post that the large number of meals was an increase of 20 percent compared to last year.

“The first year the Community Thanksgiving meal was all taken through pre-order to have as dine in or carry out and hosted by Red Lobster with a variety of churches working in partnership to prepare the 20-25 turkeys,” said Galer.

“That tradition of partnership has continued as the meal expanded from serving 300 to the anticipated 2,400 this year.”

More than 300 individuals will be volunteering on Wednesday and Thursday to help make the community event happen as well as dozens more who will prepare the food.

“The hope is that attendees, volunteers, and partners will feel a sense of community and belonging. We could not possibly make this event happen alone, it…

Quakers fear government is undermining commitment to tackle climate change

While the UK backed ambitious plans to cut greenhouse gas emissions at the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Germany earlier this month, the Christian group said the recent publication of the government’s long-awaited Clean Growth Strategy revealed that UK policies will not cut emissions fast enough.

Paul Parker, Recording Clerk for Quakers in Britain said: “Whilst communities at home and overseas are already facing the impacts of climate change, the UK risks falling well short of its obligations to cut emissions.”

The climate deal requires international cooperation to keep global warming to well below 2°C above preindustrial levels by the end of the century, and to pursue efforts to limit this further to 1.5°C.

Quakers in Britain said the inclusion of the 1.5°C target reflected the growing recognition that 2°C still poses the threat of extensive sea level rises, crop failures and extended heat waves around the world.

Parker said in a statement that people of faith should be concerned if the UK undermines its global commitment to the Paris climate deal.

He added: “As people of faith, we call on the government to redress this injustice.

“The government is right to seek leadership in UN climate…
