Open Heavens 22 November 2017: Wednesday daily devotional by Pastor Adeboye – Seeking Pre-Eminence?
Topic: Seeking Pre-Eminence? — Wednesday 22, November 2017.
Memorise: But he that is greatest among you shall be your servant. – Matthew 23:11
Read: 3 John 1:9-11 (KJV)
9 I wrote unto the church: but Diotrephes, who loveth to have the preeminence among them, receiveth us not.
10 Wherefore, if I come, I will remember his deeds which he doeth, prating against us with malicious words: and not content therewith, neither doth he himself receive the brethren, and forbiddeth them that would, and casteth them out of the church.
11 Beloved, follow not that which is evil, but that which is good. He that doeth good is of God: but he that doeth evil hath not seen God.
Bible in One Year: Psalm 34-37, Jonah 2-3, Hymn: Sing Hymn 6 – Deeper, Deeper
MESSAGE:
All those who have accepted God’s call to salvation should be aware that they have equally been called to a life of brokenness. The Christian life is a life that walks in the Spirit, having crucified the flesh with its affection and lusts (Galatians 5:24, Galatians 5:16). The place of brokenness is the place of true service and reflection of Christ. While the fellow who is broken is dead to the flesh, the fellow who is carnal is still very much alive to it. There are certain traits that characterize the life of an unbroken fellow. These traits will be visible in such a life, irrespective of the ecclesiastical position occupied. One of such traits is the desire to be preeminent in all things. Those who always want to outshine others must be extremely careful. It is good to excel, and God wants this for His children, but struggling for pre-eminence within the fold, just to gratify the flesh or feed your ego is a mark of not being broken.
You are reading Open Heavens 22 November 2017: Wednesday daily devotional by Pastor Adeboye – Seeking Pre-Eminence?
In the early Church, there were people who liked to show that they were in charge, even where there were superiors set over them. Apostle John encountered Diotrephes and he had problems with him because of this trait (3 John 1:9). Those who like to have pre-eminence usually find it difficult to recognise or submit to higher authority. They want to be the ones calling the shots. They may have a superior over them, and yet they will still want to be the ones that people take orders from. They run a parallel government to that of their superiors, and because their power base is illegal, they use lots of manipulation, coercion, intimidation and forming of unhealthy cliques to maintain their power. Such people are involved in every divisive and rebellious scheme being witnessed in the Church and in society today. Those who seek pre-eminence operate through charismatic witchcraft, and they are involved in very subtle mind-control. They want to be recognised and honoured first and above others. Their suggestion must always be taken or else you must be prepared for a fight. If you have these traits in you, you are very carnal and close to Hell’s gates. If you struggle and manipulate your way to gain pre-eminence over others, in Heaven’s records you will be the last or even have no placement there. If you are involved in this manifestation of carnality, beat a retreat today!
Action Point: Examine your life to see if you have any of the traits of life that seeks pre-eminence. If you do, repent and take corrective actions.
Hymn 6: Deeper Deeper
1. Deeper, deeper in the love of Jesus
Daily let me go;
Higher, higher in the school of wisdom,
More of grace to know.
Refrain:
Oh, deeper yet, I pray,
And higher every day,
And wiser, blessed Lord,
In Thy precious, holy Word.
2. Deeper, deeper, blessed Holy Spirit,
Take me deeper still,
Till my life is wholly lost in Jesus,
And His perfect will.
Refrain:
3. Deeper, deeper! though it cost hard trials,
Deeper let me go!
Rooted in the holy love of Jesus,
Let me fruitful grow.
Refrain:
4. Deeper, higher, every day in Jesus,
Till all conflict past,
Finds me conqu’ror, and in His own image
Perfected at last.
Refrain:
5. Deeper, deeper in the faith of Jesus,
Holy faith and true;
In His pow’r and soul exulting wisdom
Let me peace pursue.
Refrain:

Trump Declares North Korea a State Sponsor of Terrorism
President Donald Trump declared this week that North Korea is a state sponsor of terrorism.
According to the Christian Post, the classification means the U.S. may now impose more sanctions on the country, which are also expected to come this week.
Iran, Sudan and Syria are also designated state sponsors of terrorism.
Trump’s announcement came just after his trip to Asia.
“In addition to threatening the world by nuclear devastation, North Korea has repeatedly supported acts of international terrorism, including assassinations on foreign soil,” Trump told reporters at the White House.
“This designation will impose further sanctions and penalties on North Korea and related persons and supports our maximum pressure campaign to isolate the murderous regime.”
“It should have happened a long time ago,” Trump said.
Despite a prohibition from the U.N. Security Council, North Korea is working on a nuclear weapons and missiles program. The country has already fired two missiles over Japan.
A spy agency from South Korea also warned that more missile tests might continue.
Some experts, however, are worried the new designation for North Korea may mean Kim Jong Un will further strain relations between America and North Korea.
Earlier this year, plans for discussions between former U.S. officials and North Korea were cancelled after the State Department denied a visa for a top…

Algerian church shut down after being accused of printing Bibles
According to World Watch Monitor, police said the church doesn’t have state approval.
The church is affiliated with the Protestant Church of Algeria (EPA in French), which is recognised by the state.
Rev Mahmoud Haddad President of the EPA responded: “Firstly, this community is indeed affiliated to the Protestant Church of Algeria, which has been officially recognised by the government since 1974 and is accredited with both the Ministry of the Interior and the local government.
“Also there is no printing activity of Gospels or Christian publications inside these premises.”
The constitution declares Islam the state religion and prohibits institutions from engaging in behaviour incompatible with Islamic morality.
Other laws and regulations provide non-Muslims the freedom to practice their religion as long as it is in keeping with public order, morality, and respect for the rights and basic freedoms of others.

Why Evangelicals Might Vote for Roy Moore Anyway
To many onlookers, evangelical support for Roy Moore is simply a matter of politics.
The U.S. Senate candidate, accused of making unwanted sexual advances to nine women when they were teens and he was in his 30s, is seen by many evangelicals — who are overwhelmingly Republican — as one of them.
“He is nothing but a godly man trying to make this country come to its senses because of liberals and the other side of the fence trying to protect their evil ways,” an evangelical supporter of Moore recently told a reporter at Jackson, Ala.’s Walker Springs Road Baptist Church.
But political experts, historians and religion scholars say there are deeper explanations for why the former judge appears poised to become the next senator from heavily Republican Alabama during Dec. 12’s special election. Yes, politics is a big part of it, but so too is a particular way evangelicals engage with the world around them.
Conservative Christians, said Molly Worthen, a historian of American religion at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, have developed an intellectual strategy for engaging with the public called “presuppositionalism.”
It holds that evangelicals should examine other people’s underlying suppositions before debating them. If those people or groups don’t adhere to the right worldview — one that accepts the Bible as the inerrant word of God — they should…

‘God has given us a chance’
Mr Mugabe wrote in a letter which was read out in parliament: “My decision to resign is voluntary on my part and arises from my concern for the welfare of the people of Zimbabwe and my desire for a smooth, non-violent transfer of power.”
Mugabe was in power for 37 years.
Most Rev Chad Gandiya told Premier the resignation is “history in the making” and there is a huge sense of relief.
He said: “Since impendence we’ve known no other. There’s great jubilation in town as I speak.
“There are great expectations from the general population.
“God has given us a chance and we must use it profitably for all the people of Zimbabwe and not just for a few people.”
Bishop Chad added that he was happy that issue was resolved peacefully, and hopes the peace continues as the country looks forward to new leadership.
He told Premier: “We need to embrace change and move forward without vengeance.
“You’ll have those who want vengeance, that’s not the Christian way. We need to be forgiving, we need to move forward and build our country together.
“It’s up to those that are coming in as our leader to either…
