Inquest jury considering conclusions over death of Christian teacher Ann Maguire

Mrs Maguire was 61 years old and had taught at Corpus Christi Catholic College, in Leeds, for more than 40 years when Will Cornick stabbed her multiple times during a Spanish lesson on April 28 2014.

A jury of six women and five men has heard how Cornick stabbed her seven times with a 34cm long kitchen knife.

One of the blows went all the way through the teacher’s body and one severed her jugular vein.

Mrs Maguire is the only teacher ever to be murdered by a pupil in a UK school.

The inquest heard how, on the morning of the attack, Cornick told a number of children what he planned to do and also how he wanted to kill two other teachers at the school.

He showed four of these pupils at least part of the knife he had in his bag.

Much of the inquest has focused on why none of these children reported what they had heard before the tragedy.

Coroner Kevin McLoughlin told the jury he had taken a decision not to call the teenagers to give evidence.

Mr McLoughlin told the jurors they needed to consider whether the fact that the children did not report what they heard and saw contributed to Mrs Maguire’s death.

He said: “It’s a matter for your judgment.”

Mr McLoughlin said the jury also needed to consider whether the school’s lack of an explicit policy about not bringing knives onto the premises contributed to the death.

But the coroner warned the jury that they should not speculate and that contributory factors needed to be…

I was reminded in Israel that religion doesn’t work

I am returning this morning from leading a study tour of the Holy Land. (Today’s article was posted yesterday before our plane left Tel Aviv.) Each time I travel to Israel, I am impressed again with the beauty, history, and spiritual significance of this singular land.

As our group took communion while looking over Jerusalem, I reminded them that this “Holy City” is venerated by the world’s great monotheistic religions and more than half of the planet’s population. Before us stood some of the most famous structures in these religions.

For Muslims, the Al-Aqsa Mosque and Dome of the Rock comprise the third-holiest site in the world. For Jews, the Western Wall of the Temple Mount is the holiest place on earth. For Christians, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre or Garden Tomb is believed to be the location of Jesus’ death and resurrection.

Throughout our stay in Israel, we were surrounded by the fervency of religion. Muslims streamed to the Temple Mount for Friday prayers. Jews crowded the Western Wall on the Sabbath. Christians gathered for Sunday worship in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre.

As I experienced what is arguably the world’s most religious city, I was reminded of the deception of religion.

An illustration from Leonardo da Vinci

To illustrate my point, I’d like you to consider what is now the world’s most expensive painting.

Leonardo da Vinci painted the Salvator Mundi (“Savior of the World”) for Louis XII of France. His depiction of Jesus was passed to King Charles I of England, then it was auctioned off. It was purchased by a British collector in 1900, but it was damaged and with unclear authorship. The collector’s descendants sold it at auction in 1958 for forty-five pounds (around sixty dollars).

Over the years, artists altered the image, turning it into a black-and-white drawing. Restoration of the painting began in 2005. After years of painstaking work, including infrared analysis, the painting was returned to…

Katy Perry and LA Archdiocese awarded $5m sum

The US singer wanted to buy the property, Los Feliz, in LA from the Roman Catholic Archdiocese in 2015 but restaurant business owner Dana Hollister also put in an offer which was accepted.

Dana Hollister has now been found guilty of interfering with Katy Perry’s transaction with the convent and the jury said Hollister acted with malice.

The two have been battling for ownership of the 8-acre property for years but now Hollister will have to pay up the $5 million to cover legal costs, $3.47 million to the archdiocese and $1.57 million to Perry.

The confusion erupted when the LA diocese was working on the sale with Katy Perry while two nuns were trying to sell it to Hollister.

A judge determined in March that the nuns had no right to sell the property. They have not lived there since 2011.

Hollister’s lawyer, Michael Geibelson said he will appeal the decision and Hollister herself said she will take it all the way to the Vatican.

People Who Decorate Early for the Holidays are Happier, Experts Claim

REUTERS/Barbara ListonPeople view Kathy and Mark Hyatt’s house decorated with holiday lights in Plantation, Florida, November 30, 2015.

While some people wait for a day after Thanksgiving Day to put up their holiday embellishments, psychology experts have claimed that putting up Christmas decors earlier can actually make a person happier.

With Thanksgiving Day happening two days from now, many Americans are now looking forward to the day after this week’s celebration not only because of the Black Friday sale but also because, for them, it is the ideal day for the Christmas tree to find its way out of the storage room and get embellished for the holiday season. However, it is also a fact that some people don’t wait for the latter days of November before decorating for Christmas, and psychology experts claim that these people are actually happier.

“Although there could be a number of symptomatic reasons why someone would want to obsessively put up decorations early, most commonly for nostalgic reasons either to relive the magic or to compensate for past neglect. In a world full of stress and anxiety people like to associate with things that make them happy and Christmas decorations evoke those strong feelings of the childhood. Decorations are simply an anchor or pathway to those old childhood magical emotions of excitement. So putting up those Christmas decorations early extends the excitement,” Steve McKeown, a Psychoanalyst, founder of MindFixers and owner of The McKeown Clinic, explained in an interview.

It is said that people during the Roman era had to wait for Christmas Eve before…

Xbox One X Project Scorpio Edition Back In Stock

REUTERS/NICK ADAMSThe Xbox One controller is pictured during a press event unveiling Microsoft’s new Xbox in Redmond, Washington.

Black Friday 2017 is almost here and it’s almost time to finalize that all-important holiday shopping list. Microsoft sure is interested in being included in most shoppers’ list as the tech giant has been offering some pretty enticing deals.

While there’s not much to choose from when it comes to those looking for a cheap PlayStation4, the same can’t be said for the Xbox One. There are currently several retailers offering superb deals on the console and its peripherals.

Most shoppers will be able to able to pick up a basic Xbox One S 500 GB with no bundled games for about $190 at a number of retailers, ranging from Walmart to Toys R Us. However, there are a few differences between what the retailers are offering with every console purchase.

Target’s doorbuster deal, for example, will throw in a $25 gift card for $190, while buying one at Kohl’s will get shoppers $45 in Kohl’s Cash. There is also a myriad of bundles including games and Xbox Live subscriptions that await eager buyers.

What most shoppers won’t find, however, are cheap deals for the Xbox One X although retailers are offering bundles and special editions of the console. These include the Xbox One X Project Scorpio Edition is back in stock this week at Microsoft Store. Controllers too are getting their prices slashed with many retailers will offer a standard discount of $20.

There’s also no shortage of games on sale both digitally and physically. “Forza Motorsport 7” ($29 at Target), “Forza Horizon 3″…

Police apologise to vicar over stalker ordeal

Rev Graham Sawyer from St James Church in Briercliffe was targeted for 13 months before officers issued a woman with a harassment notice in December 2015, putting an end to “countless” attempts to contact him.

Assistant chief constable at Lancashire Police, Terry Woods, said: “While this particular case was some time ago and our practices in dealing with such cases have moved on, we acknowledge the level of service provided to the victim fell short of what could be expected and we apologise for that.”

Rev Sawyer first alerted police in November 2014 to his stalker, who would loiter around his church before services started in order to catch him alone.

The 56-year-old told the Lancashire Telegraph the perpetrator incited a “vengeful mob” by spreading false allegations about him, and attendance to his service dropped by up to half by the stalking was happening.

He told the newspaper: “This is about the repeated failings of Lancashire police with my case; it’s about the way the police is handling stalking in England and in Lancashire.

“They [police] made things exponentially worse for me, my congregation and for my stalker.

“I would never go to Lancashire police again for help after this.”

    Podcast Episode #382

Rarely do people push back against conventional wisdom. But as we share today, maybe they should.

Some highlights from today’s episode include:

    • Don’t assume conventional wisdom to always be truth.
    • When someone at a church says “We can’t do that because it’s in the bylaws,” that is not always the case. And if it is, bylaws can be changed.
    • Most policies are implemented to idiot-proof an organization.
    • Leaders often use conventional wisdom as an excuse not to lead.

The five problems we discuss are:

    1. Conventional wisdom is not always conventional
    2. Conventional wisdom is not always wise
    3. Conventional wisdom often has sketchy history
    4. Question things that have no documentation or authority
    5. Don’t do stupid. but don’t hold back
