Fresh concerns for Christians in Vietnam

A joint initiative by 14 Vietnamese and international organisations, including Christian Solidarity Worldwide (CSW) has called for the release of 165 people arrested for their religious or political beliefs.

However, according to the advocacy group, the challenges of obtaining information about prisoners in the country mean that the real number is likely to be higher.

CSW’s Chief Executive Mervyn Thomas welcomed the initiative and said: “Our research consistently finds that Christians and other religious communities in Vietnam continue to experience violations of their right to freedom of religion or belief.

“In particular, Christians from indigenous people groups suffer a double discrimination as both religious and ethnic minorities.”

The NOW! Campaign has urged the government of Vietnam to immediately release “all prisoners of conscience”, which is “anyone who has been arrested for his/her political, religious or conscientiously held beliefs, ethnic origin, sex, colour, language, national or social origin, economic status, birth, sexual orientation or other status, who has not used violence or advocated violence or hatred”.

Thomas explained the vital role prisoners of conscience play in the Southeast Asian country.

He said: “In addition, a significant number of human rights defenders in Vietnam belong to religious communities.

“These individuals play a vital role in promoting the right to freedom of religion or belief.

“We call on the Vietnamese…

Memorial service for Paddington Bear author at St Paul’s Cathedral

The English author, who penned more than 200 books, died in June, aged 91, following a short illness.

The service came a week after Bond’s new book was announced at St. Paul’s.

In Paddington At St Paul’s, chaos ensues when the bear is mistaken for a choirboy during a visit to the London landmark.

Bond’s daughter, Karen Jankel, said during the announcement: “If the outpouring of wonderful messages of condolence we received from my father’s fans is anything to go by, there will be many people who will be delighted to learn there is another Paddington book to look forward to.

“Our family feel immensely proud that we will be honouring his life at St Paul’s Cathedral and the fact that this is the setting for his final story makes it very special indeed.”

HarperCollins Children’s Books executive publisher Ann-Janine Murtagh added: “We are deeply honoured to be publishing the final Paddington story from our most cherished author, Michael Bond.

“Paddington At St Paul’s is Michael’s parting gift to all his fans – a simply classic Paddington story, brimming with curiosity, charm and affectionate exuberance.”

Bond became a beloved giant of children’s literature after his first book, A Bear Called Paddington, was published in 1958, about the bear from Peru who loves marmalade.

Full celebratory peal to sound from Westminster Abbey where royal couple wed

On their platinum wedding anniversary, a full celebratory peal will sound from Westminster Abbey, where the 21-year-old future monarch Princess Elizabeth walked up the aisle to marry her dashing Greek and Danish prince in 1947.

At 1pm on Monday November 20, the Abbey’s Company of Ringers will begin a complicated peal consisting of 5,070 changes or sequences, with the 70 a nod to the special anniversary.

It will take the team of 10 ringers around three hours and 20 minutes to complete, as they deliver the tribute without a break.

It is a historic tradition that the Abbey bells are rung for significant royal occasions and anniversaries, and the Queen is the first British monarch to celebrate a platinum wedding anniversary.

The fairy-tale royal wedding was a morale boost in the tough years that followed the Second World War and millions of people tuned in to listen to the ceremony on the wireless.

Royals and dignitaries gathered inside the Abbey, waiting for the young royal bride, whose Norman Hartnell wedding dress was hand-embroidered with more than 10,000 pearls and crystals.

War-time leader Winston Churchill summed up the occasion as “a flash of colour on the hard road we travel”.

For austerity reasons, very little extra seating was provided inside the gothic Abbey, with the number of guests kept to 2,000.

In contrast to later royal weddings, the only flowers in the Abbey were in large vases either side of…

Eight Keys for Church Christmas Services – Rainer on Leadership #380

    Podcast Episode #380

SUBSCRIBE: iTunes • RSS • Stitcher • TuneIn RadioGoogle Play • iHeart Radio

Ready or not, Christmas is coming. That means churches are planning events, socials, and special services. Today we provide some tips to make this a great Christmas season for your church.

Some highlights from today’s episode include:

    • A Christmas Eve evening service is a prime time to reach unchurched people.
    • People expect you to have a traditional Christmas Eve service.
    • Thanksgiving is the marker when people start really thinking about Christmas.
    • Facebook is the best place to advertise your church’s Christmas events.
    • One key to have more guests fill out info cards is to have everyone (including members) fill out a card.
    • Christmas Eve services should really be an all-hands-on-deck event for the church staff.

The eight tips we give for Christmas are:

    1. Christmas Eve is the time when the unchurched are most receptive to attending church.
    2. Traditions are key: hymns and carols, candlelight with Silent Night, etc.
    3. The service should be brief, 30-minutes max.
    4. Begin promotion the right after Thanksgiving.
    5. Use the Facebook page and Facebook ads
    6. Use a very simple registration card: first name, email, guest or member, prayer request. Ask everyone to complete it.
    7. Prepare for multiple services in most churches, at the very least for greater attendance.
    8. Plan for staff to have time off post-Christmas.

Archbishop Justin Welby defends bullying advice

Most Rev Justin Welby said the advice, distributed to 4,700 head teachers, sought to prevent bullying and was not about “sexual ethics”.

The leader wrote for the Anglican Communion News Service on Monday after several conservative Christian figures suggested the Church was sending a liberal and damaging message about gender identity.

Archbishop Justin said: “The Church of England is committed to an education that enables people to live life in all its fullness, and fulfils the words of Jesus in John 10:10: “I came that they might have life, and have it abundantly.

“This guidance helps schools to offer the Christian message of love, joy and the celebration of our humanity without exception or exclusion.”

His comments came after Christian Concern warned the new advice marked a “missed opportunity” to provide clarity in a culture marked by gender “confusion”.

Tim Dieppe from the campaign group told Premier: “The Church shouldn’t be encouraging people to transition their gender, particularly children.

“People cannot legally change their change until they’re 18-years-old and I don’t know why the Church is going out of its way to exchange gender reassignment.”

    Parliament TV

Guidance, contained in the Church of England’s new Valuing All God’s Children report said nursery and primary school children ought to be free to try “the many cloaks of identity” without being labelled or…

Joyce Meyer’s Daily 14 November 2017 Devotional: The Reason Jesus Came

Joyce Meyer's Daily 14 November 2017 Devotional: The Reason Jesus Came

Topic: The Reason Jesus Came [Tuesday November 14, 2017]

Or do you suppose that the Scripture is speaking to no purpose that says, The Spirit Whom He has caused to dwell in us yearns over us and He yearns for the Spirit [to be welcome] with a jealous love? — James 4:5

I want you to notice something about the verse above. Notice that we are told to draw near to God before we’re told to stop sinning.

There are so many people who have it backwards. They think they can never come to God, can never have a relationship with Him, and can never be a Christian because they have issues in their life that they are trying to overcome first. They are trying to get themselves all straightened out so they can be good enough to have a relationship with Him.

But that’s wrong. The reason Jesus came is because we can never be good enough without Him. We have to have Jesus in our lives. His death, His shed blood paid for our sins—paid the debt that we owe.

There’s no way we can be cleansed of sin until we draw near to God through the name of Jesus. God longs for you to come close to Him today. Don’t stay away, believing the lie that you must clean yourself of sin first. Instead, go to God, and let Him cleanse you through the sacrifice Jesus made for you.

Prayer Starter: God, I come to You through the blood of Jesus that cleanses me of my sin. Thank You for Your forgiveness. I refuse to live in shame because I know I can draw near to You now, receiving Your love and forgiveness.

Our Daily Manna November 14, 2017: ODM devotional – The Power Of Extra Effort!

Go the extra mile with someone (extra patience). Don’t live within your means. Don’t stay where you are! Associate higher! Talk to people more successful and smarter than you are! Read their books!

Topic: The Power Of Extra Effort! [Tuesday, November 14, 2017]

    Basic Scriptures: 2 Kings 9:11-25

Vs. 24 of today’s Basic Scripture is a signpost for strength and determination: “And Jehu drew a bow with his full strength and smote Jehoram between his arms and the arrow went out at his heart….” The Lord’s emphasis today is on, “Jehu drew a bow with his “FULL STRENGTH.” This is the last quarter of this year and most people are no longer serving the Lord with their full strength! Most people begin the year well, run weak midway and dry up in the end!

That’s not your portion! FULL STRENGTH also means, “more than the normal strength.” It means THE EXTRA STRENGTH, the extra prayer, the extra giving, extra study, extra work, etc, you put in. Most people are using their normal strength and not their FULL STRENGTH. As 2017 ends and 2018 begins, do that EXTRA research on your job, business and ministry. The extra effort can be the difference between success and failure, between winners and mediocre (Second rate or just average people). You can read your Bible a little bit more (extra effort) as the year ends. STOP PANICKING THAT ANOTHER YEAR IS ENDING! You can pray and fast for more flow and presence of the Holy Ghost anointing in your life and ministry.

Pastors should have extra services! Normal services stimulate normal growth! Extra knowledge above your colleagues can distinguish you in your life and ministry. Search more and work more! Go the extra mile with someone (extra patience). Don’t live within your means. Don’t stay where you are! Associate higher! Talk to people more successful and smarter than you are! Read their books! Talk with people more spiritual than you! Read about them! You can have more than you ‘ve got because you can become more than you are! Do something extra as the year ends! Pray now!

THE LAGOS MOUNTAIN NOVEMBER ANOI NTING SERVICE IS AT OGUDU ON SUNDAY November 26th. TIME: 7.am. THEME: “POWER PASS POWER: EVIL SERPENTS MUST CATCH FIRE!” Come with your anointing oil or any point of contact. Something great must HAPPEN! Call: +234-706-3384, +234-909-0393 for more information.

Prayer Points: Take any song of worship as led.

    1. Thank God for His Word today.

    2. Ask for extra grace for extra effort!

    3. UPROOT DISCOURAGEMENT NOW!

    4. Lord, my family and I shall not stay in the crowd. Distinguish us in Jesus Christ name- (pray it very well).

    5. Lord, energize me to draw my bow of life at full strength.

    6. Pray any of the prayer points as you are led. Pray for this Daily Manna vision and mission.
