Andrew Wommack’s Daily 11 November 2017 Devotional: Exercise Your Soul

Topic: Exercise Your Soul [Saturday November 11, 2017]

Matthew 26:41 “Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”

Text: Matthew 26:41

Our spirit is not our problem. The born-again Christian receives a new spirit at conversion, that is just like Jesus’ (1 Jn. 4:17) because it is the Spirit of Jesus. Our born-again spirit is always willing to do God’s will. It’s our flesh that is the problem.

The flesh, as Jesus describes it here, not only includes our physical body but also describes our soul. God has given every believer everything it takes to walk in victory, but “we have this treasure in earthen vessels” (2 Cor. 4:7). That is saying that our spirit, where God has deposited all of His power and glory, is locked inside our flesh.

That does not mean that we cannot tap into this divine source. As much as we will renew our minds and act on the Word of God, we can experience this divine flow through our physical bodies. However, just as we must use our muscles to increase in strength, we must exercise ourselves (soul, mind and body) unto godliness (1 Tim. 4:7-8).

Prayer is one important way of exercising ourselves unto godliness, and is why Jesus admonished His disciples to watch and pray with Him.

For we know not what we should pray for as we ought; but the Spirit himself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. — Romans 8:26

John Knox, with an all-consuming soul-concern for his country, prayed, “Give me Scotland, or I die!” His earnest travail was rewarded with a spiritual rebirth in his land. This is what is termed “praying in the Spirit.” It is the manifestation of a deep spiritual concern for others, and it is instilled by the Spirit of God. This kind of prayer can leap over oceans, speed across burning deserts, spring over mountains, bound through jungles, and carry the healing, helping power of the Gospel to the object of prayer.

That “the Spirit Himself makes intercession” indicates that it is actually God pleading, praying, and mourning through us. Thus we become co-laborers with God, actual partners with Him; our lives are lifted from the low plane of selfishness to the high plane of creativeness with God. John Knox travailed, and the Church in Scotland broke into new life.

Prayer for the day: My heart’s cry is heard—thank You, Lord Jesus!

Written by Billy Graham, Founder of Billy Graham Evangelistic Association(BGEA). BGEA exists to proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ by every effective means and to equip the church and others to do the same.

New Zealand Revises Parliamentary Prayer to Exclude Jesus’ Name

New Zealand Revises Parliamentary Prayer to Exclude Jesus’ Name

New Zealand’s parliament has removed a reference to Jesus in a prayer that is said before parliamentary meetings.

According to The Christian Post, the original version of the prayer read, “Almighty God, humbly acknowledging our need for Thy guidance in all things, and laying aside all private and personal interests, we beseech Thee to grant that we may conduct the affairs of this House and of our country to the glory of Thy holy name, the maintenance of true religion and justice, the honor of the Queen, and the public welfare, peace, and tranquility of New Zealand, through Jesus Christ our Lord.”

The new version removes Jesus’ name, as well the reference to the Queen of England.

The text of the new prayer reads: “Almighty God, we give thanks for the blessings which have been bestowed on New Zealand,” the proposed new prayer reads. “Laying aside all personal interests, we pray for guidance in our deliberations, that we may conduct the affairs of this House with wisdom and humility, for the public welfare and peace of New Zealand.”

The new version of the prayer does still include the reference to “Almighty God,” although there had been a version proposed that took out all religious language. This version was not accepted, however.

More Than $1 Million Raised to Help Texas Church Shooting Victims and Families

More Than $1 Million Raised to Help Texas Church Shooting Victims and Families

Communities in the U.S. have come together in support of Sutherland Springs, Texas, where 26 people were killed in a church shooting. More than $1.3 million has been raised to help the victims and their families.

The Christian Post reports that $500,000 of those funds will go to help the family of Bryan Holcombe, the guest preacher who was delivering the message at the Sutherland Springs First Baptist Church that Sunday. Holcombe, along with his wife, Karla, as well as six other relatives, were all killed in the shooting. They suffered the most loss of any family in the massacre.

“Let’s get together and make it easier for the Holcombe family to recover from the 10 family members they’ve lost at the Texas Church Shooting on November 5. A million dollar goal would only cover $100,000 per person — there are many family members to cover,” wrote Cristopher Foster, a friend of the Holcombe family, in a GoFundMe campaign.

“Keep them all in your prayers. If we could all gather up some financial support to send this family during this devastation, it would be a blessing. This is too much to bear on their own, let’s be the Church! No amount of money will ever be enough, but it can take off a large burden,” he added.

The Southern Baptist Convention has also offered to cover the funeral costs of the victims, as ChristianHeadlines.com previously…
