Pope bans sale of cigarettes on Vatican grounds

A statement released on Thursday by Greg Burke, director of the Holy See press office, explained that the Holy See “cannot be cooperating with a practice that is clearly harming the health of people.”

The Vatican cited World Health Organization statistics which suggest that smoking causes more than seven million deaths worldwide every year.

Burke acknowledged that the sale of cigarettes has been a source of revenue for the Holy See.

Although Pope John Paul II banned smoking in the Vatican in 2002, cigarettes have been sold to Vatican employees and pensioners at reduced prices; they’ve been allowed to buy five cartons of cigarettes a month.

Taxes in Italy have caused cigarette costs to spike and it’s been reported that many citizens ask their non-smoking friends in the Vatican to purchase discounted cigarettes for them.

A 2015 book by Emiliano Fittipaldi claimed that the Vatican made an annual profit of $11.6 million from cigarette sales.

However, Burke said: “No profit can be legitimate if it puts lives at risk.”

He added that the sale of large cigars will continue for the time being at the Vatican because cigar smoke is not inhaled.

Tenn. Church May Lose Voting Rights in State Baptist Convention Because It Hired Female Pastor

A Tennessee Baptist church may lose its voting rights and be severed from the state Baptist Convention because of its decision to hire a female pastor, which the Southern Baptist Convention does not allow.

According to the Knoxville News Sentinel Wednesday, in light of First Baptist Church in Jefferson City’s move to hire Ellen Di Giosia to be senior pastor, a committee of the Tennessee Baptist Convention has deemed the congregation “not a cooperating church.”

FBC in Jefferson City is affiliated with the more theologically moderate Cooperative Baptist Fellowship and the Tennessee Cooperative Baptist Fellowship. However, it maintains ties with the more conservative Tennessee Baptist Convention and the Southern Baptist Convention, according to its website.

Di Giosia, previously an associate pastor with San Antonio’s Woodland Baptist Church, is First Baptist’s 32nd pastor, and was hired earlier this summer and formally installed on Sunday. She is the only female pastor leading a church connected with the Tennessee Baptist Convention. While other women lead Baptist churches in the state, those congregations are not linked to the TBC.

    Southern Baptists affirm that…

Notting Hill church choir continued singing despite fearing terror attack

A church member told the Mirror about the moment 80 members of the choir at All Saints Church realised something serious was happening, as police snipers in balaclavas were spotted outside of the building on rooftops at around 8.20pm.

Jake Elsley, 21, said they continued singing for about ten minutes before realising they should try to “get out of the area”, ensuring they kept “away from the windows”.

He said: “We were having a choir rehearsal and heard a helicopter overhead and could see blue flashing lights outside the church door.

“I kept seeing people in the doorway but had no idea what was going on.”

Armed police closed off parts of the Portobello Road and a helicopter used searchlights to help with the operation.

After Elsley and the group were evacuated, he tweeted about not being sure what the cause of the raid was.

He said: “One of the leaders tells us that there are armed police outside… that we are to lock all doors and get away from the windows.

Uber Plans To Bring On-Demand Flying Taxis To L.A.

    REUTERS/Kai Pfaffenbach

An illustration picture shows the logo of car-sharing service app Uber on a smartphone next to the picture of an official German taxi sign in September 15, 2014.

One of the most iconic future promises will soon be within reach as Uber plans to bring its on-demand flying taxis to Los Angeles. To do this, the ride-sharing service has recruited the help of NASA saying that its first demonstration of a flying car is only three years away.

At the recent Lisbon Web Summit Wednesday, the company announced its plans to build a network of flying taxis within L.A. by 2020. According to chief product officer Jeff Holden, NASA already signed an agreement to develop a specialized air traffic control system for the vehicles.

“Technology will allow L.A. residents to literally fly over the city’s historically bad traffic, giving them time back to use in far more productive ways,” Holden said. “At scale, we expect UberAir will perform tens of thousands of flights each day across the city.”

With this announcement, L.A. joins Dallas-Fort Worth, and Dubai in the list of cities Uber plans to launch its new flying car project, dubbed “Elevate.” To give people a glimpse of what Elevate has to offer, the company released a video demonstrating how the service will work.

The clip shows a woman booking a flight through the Uber app and heads to a “skyport” on the roof of a nearby building. Her phone is scanned after which she is allowed to pass through a turnstile and notifies her of which boarding pad to enter.

She boards her flying taxi and takes off, with the ability to monitor her…

NFL players urged to observe moment of silence

The National Football League Players Association (NFLPA) has unanimously passed a resolution calling on all players to honor the Veterans Day Moment of Silence Act during Sunday’s games.

What is this Act? Why is it so significant?

An Act with a noble history

The Act was passed unanimously by both houses of Congress and signed into law by President Obama on October 7, 2016. It calls on all Americans to observe a two-minute moment of silence on Veterans Day.

The Act follows a long tradition in the United Kingdom and other Commonwealth countries in which a two-minute silence is observed each year on Armistice Day, November 11, at 11 a.m. The silence coincides with the time in 1918 when the First World War came to an end. A two-minute silence is also observed on Remembrance Sunday, the Sunday closest to November 11 each year.

This tradition originated in Cape Town, South Africa, where the mayor suggested one minute of thanksgiving for those who returned alive from the war, followed by another minute to remember the fallen.

A South African author named James Percy FitzPatrick proposed that this silence become an official part of the annual Armistice Day service. He explained his reasoning:

It is due to the women, who have lost and suffered and borne so much, with whom the thought is ever present.
It is due to the children that they know to whom they owe their dear fought freedom.
It is due to the men, and from them, as men.
But far and away, above all else, it is due to those who gave their all, sought no recompense, and with whom we can never repay–our Glorious and Immortal Dead.

Other countries have a similar tradition. I have been in Israel on Yom HaZikaron, the national day of remembrance, and watched as cars stopped and the nation came to a standstill for two minutes of remembrance and gratitude. India pauses each year on January 30 for two minutes of silence in remembrance of those who died in their country’s struggle for freedom.

    Critics…

Parliament may axe Jesus from prayer

Politicians are currently being consulted on the plans to change the passage, which is delivered at the start of each Parliamentary session.

The original prayer reads: “Almighty God, humbly acknowledging our need for Thy guidance in all things, and laying aside all private and personal interests, we beseech Thee to grant that we may conduct the affairs of this House and of our country to the glory of Thy holy name, the maintenance of true religion and justice, the honour of the Queen, and the public welfare, peace, and tranquillity of New Zealand, through Jesus Christ our Lord.”

According to Radio New Zealand, is it understood MPs have already rejected a more radical rewriting of the prayer would have removed all religious references.

The suggested new version says: “Almighty God, we give thanks for the blessings which have been bestowed on New Zealand.

“Laying aside all personal interests, we pray for guidance in our deliberations, that we may conduct the affairs of this House with wisdom and humility, for the public welfare and peace of New Zealand.

    “Amen.”

Read out by the Speaker of the House at the Parliament buildings in Wellington (pictured above), the parliamentary prayer is delivered in Te Reo – a Maori language.

According to the 2013 New Zealand census, 48 per cent of the population identify as Christian, while 42 per cent say they are non-religious.

The Queen remains the official monarch of New…

Retailers urged to do ‘homework’ as John Lewis unveils Christmas advert

A rebuke by founder of the Christian website whyChristmas.com, James Cooper, came as John Lewis unveiled its eagerly anticipated 2017 Christmas campaign on Friday.

Mr Cooper told Premier: “All adverts are designed to sell things – big businesses have got their target markets – but I also think they could reference more of the real meaning of Christmas [and] actually do some homework.”

The latest festive John Lewis commercial is a two-minute tale of friendship which develops between a seven-year-old boy and his imaginary monster under the bed.

The clip, which is part of a £7 million campaign, came two days after the right-wing news website Breitbart criticised Tesco for its “politically correct” Christmas advert which offered “no visible Christianity”.

Mr Cooper, who created his website to promote the true meaning of Christmas, went on to say: “Christmas primarily does seem to be a commercial holiday here now; it’s lost a lot of its religion connotations.

    John Lewis/PA Wire

“I think that’s a shame and that it’s time we reclaimed Christmas.”

Earlier in the year, Lidl released its “Cavalier Carver” advert, which centred on a man carving up a Christmas turkey, while Argos’ festive commercial features elves working in a futuristic workshop.
