RCCG Sunday School Teacher's Manual Lesson Ten (10): The Holy Spirit In Action

Topic: The Holy Spirit In Action [Sunday, 5th November 2017]

OPENING PRAYER: Father, fill me wilt to the Holy Spirit power to enable me witness for you anywhere I find myself

BIBLE PASSAGE: Act 1:1-19

1 The former treatise have I made, O Theophilus, of all that Jesus began both to do and teach,

2 Until the day in which he was taken up, after that he through the Holy Ghost had given commandments unto the apostles whom he had chosen:

3 To whom also he shewed himself alive after his passion by many infallible proofs, being seen of them forty days, and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God:

4 And, being assembled together with them, commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which, saith he, ye have heard of me.

5 For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence.

6 When they therefore were come together, they asked of him, saying, Lord, wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel?

7 And he said unto them, It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power.

8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.

9 And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight.

10 And while they looked stedfastly toward heaven as he went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel;

11 Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven.

12 Then returned they unto Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is from Jerusalem a sabbath day’s journey.

13 And when they were come in, they went up into an upper room, where abode both Peter, and James, and John, and Andrew, Philip, and Thomas, Bartholomew, and Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon Zelotes, and Judas the brother of James.

14 These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication, with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brethren.

15 And in those days Peter stood up in the midst of the disciples, and said, (the number of names together were about an hundred and twenty,)

16 Men and brethren, this scripture must needs have been fulfilled, which the Holy Ghost by the mouth of David spake before concerning Judas, which was guide to them that took Jesus.

17 For he was numbered with us, and had obtained part of this ministry.

18 Now this man purchased a field with the reward of iniquity; and falling headlong, he burst asunder in the midst, and all his bowels gushed out.

19 And it was known unto all the dwellers at Jerusalem; insomuch as that field is called in their proper tongue, Aceldama, that is to say, The field of blood.

MEMORY VERSE: “But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.” – Act 1:8

LESSON INRODUCTION: Having studied the personality of the Holy Spirit and His attributes, we need to look at the significance and the ministry of the Holy Spirit order to see Him in action.

TEXT REVIEW: Acts 1:1-19

i. The creative power of the Holy Spirit was first seen in action at the creation when the Holy Spirit (God’s Spirit) began to move upon the face of the deep, Gen. 1:2, and when the mortal was transformed through God’s impartation of His Spirit Gen. 2:7.

ii. The Holy Spirit being the Spirit of wisdom, knowledge and understanding spoke through David several years before the birth of Jesus on the manner through which Jesus would be betrayed and suffer from the hand of Judas. Acts 1:16-19 and what would become the reward of the betrayer. This indicates that the Holy Spirit is a SPEAKING SPIRIT and He worked with David.

iii. The Holy Spirit was with the LORD Jesus and spoke to the apostles and commanded them to wait for the promise of the Father. Acts 10:38; Acts 1:4-5

Three powers of the Holy spirit are demonstrated here:

i. He is the Commander of the church Act1:2,4

ii. He is the One who makes promises and never breaks them. Acts 2:1-39.

iii. He is the Baptizer, Acts 1:5, and the Restorer of the Kingdom. Acts 1:6-8

iv. Restoration of God’s kingdom to Israel would be practically impossible without the Executive Power of the Trinity which is the Holy Spirit through the defeat of the accusers, the devil. Rev. 12:10

Memory Verse: “But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.”Acts 1:8

Bible Passage: Acts 1:1-19

Introduction:

Having studied the personality of the Holy Spirit and His attributes, we need to look at the significance and the ministry of the Holy Spirit in order to see Him in action.

Lesson Outlines:

1. The significance of the Holy Spirit

2. The ministry of the Holy Spirit

The Significance Of The Holy Spirit:

The Holy Spirit is God’s seed of power in a believer, planted at his baptism (of the Holy Spirit) and growing to bring forth the fruits of power (Acts 1:8). This power supernaturally makes the believer to become a true witness of the word e.g. the initially timid, easily shaken like a reed PETER turns out to be an active, powerful, immovable Rock and witness of the word (Acts 2:1-47; 4:10-20).

He is also the Consuming Fire of God, which distinguishes the true believer (Matthew 3:11-12). He is the divine Wind of God’s Church and the enabling Grace behind a fruitful and rewarding Christianity (Ezekiel 37:1-10, 1Corinthians 2:4, Luke 4:14-18).

The Ministry Of The Holy Spirit:

The ministry of the Holy Spirit, amongst many, includes the following:

1. He quickens our mortal bodies (Romans 8:11), which makes it illegal for any sickness or disease to dwell there, but instead turns it to partakers of God’s divine nature (Matthew 3:12, 2Peter 1:4).

2. He guides into all truth (John 16:12-13) by enlightening the understanding of the believers on all issues of life. He is, therefore, our only insurance against the deadly and enslaving grip of ignorance. By this divine guidance, we will always have solutions to every problem that may confront us.

3. He reveals things to come (Acts 21:4, 10-12).

4. He reminds of things taught (John 14:26) especially in the times of need e.g. the Lord Jesus in His encounter with the tempter.

5. He reproves the world of sin. The sinner gets conviction not by gimmicks but by the Holy spirit (Zechariah 4:6).

6. He reproves the world of righteousness by making them to live righteous in the midst of a perverse generation.

7. He reproves the world of judgment (John 16:11).

8. He testifies of the truth, which makes it easier, therefore, for a true believer to decree a thing, and it is established unto him (John 15:26; Job 22:28).

9. He intercedes for the saints (Romans 8:26-27).

10. He gives spiritual gifts unto hungry men and women who earnestly covet them (1Corinthians 12:4, 11).

Conclusion:

The Holy Spirit is unique in significance and His ministry is comprehensive. It is dangerous for any true believer to run the pilgrims journey without Him. Put His house in order, that is your body, which is His Temple so that He can dwell there. Pray accordingly in Jesus’ name.

Questions:

1. How significant is the Comforter?

2. Discuss the comprehensive ministry of the Comforter.

Former Ugandan child soldier accepts prestigious peace award

Lakor, who’s a partner of Christian children’s charity World Vision, presented a Tedx Talk on Friday on her experience of war as a child as part of this year’s Whitehall Women event at HMS President in London.

As part of the event, Laker also received the Marsh Award for Peace-making and Peace building from the prestigious Wilton Park.

The infamous LRA militia abducted Lakor when she was 14 in Uganda. She was forced into fighting, and endured sexual violence as part of the LRA’s ‘forced wives’ system for many years.

Then she escaped Lakor was supported at the World Vision Children of War Reintegration Centre in Gulu, Uganda.

As a survivor herself she went on to co-found the Watye Ki Gen charity, which translates to “we have hope”.

The charity supports female returnees from the Lord’s Resistance Army and their children. It helps them combat the stigma that affects every area of their lives from employment to their children’s education.

World Vision Children of War Reintegration Centre has helped rehabilitate and reintegrate nearly 15,000 former child soldiers and children born in captivity in the past decade.

Erica Hall, World Vision UK’s Technical Policy Lead on Child Protection said:  “Children are vulnerable in the face of conflict.

“Recent UN figures show that there were at least 14,500 grave violations against children in armed conflict last year, including recruitment, sexual…

Exorcist Suspects Victim of Worst Case of Modern-Era Demonic Possession Already Dead

Reuters/Jaime SaldarriagaAn exorcism ritual performed in 2012.

A respected psychiatrist with decades of experience in exorcism suspects that the most terrifying demonic possession victim he has encountered in modern times may have already died.

Without revealing the real identity of the said demonic possession victim and only referring to her as Julia, Dr. Richard Gallagher, a registered psychiatrist who teaches at Columbia University and New York Medical College, declared that the woman was the worst possessed victim he has ever encountered.

According to the respected exorcist, while most reports of possession turn out not to be real cases of possession, the 39-year-old Julia was a convincing case of demonic possession as she even referred to herself as “the high priestess of a satanic cult” and dressed in a dark flowing dress and wore black eyeshadow.

Julia’s life was allegedly filled with paranormal activities, recalling that her cats even went wild in the middle of the night after seeing her for the first time. In another instance, her voice even entered a phone conversation between Gallagher and a priest even if she was thousands of miles away.

For Gallagher, Julia’s case has been the worst he has encountered in the modern era, which, thankfully, the victim has…

Razer Announced Android-Powered Razer Phone

Razer

Razer finally releases its much-awaited smartphone dubbed the Razer Phone

Gaming hardware manufacturer Razer has finally unveiled its highly anticipated Razer Phone. Equipped with outrageous specs, the phone finally answers the question of whether it’s possible to make an Android phone for gamers.

Sporting the flagship-standard Snapdragon 835 processor with 8 GB of RAM, plus 64 GB of expandable storage, Razer’s entry in the highly competitive smartphone market definitely packs a punch. In addition to the monstrous processing power, the device is also equipped with stereo front-facing speakers with Dolby Atmos support and a generous 4,000mAh battery.

To effectively play mobile games, the smartphone also comes with a 5.7-inch 1440p screen complete with variable refresh rate similar to Apple’s most recent iPad Pro. A dual 12-megapixel camera system is located at the back and works along the same lines as Apple’s iPhone setup: one camera has an f/1.8 lens for wide shots and the other is a telephoto f/2.6 shooter.

Razer’s motto of “for gamers, by gamers,” definitely rings true with the Razer Phone with impressive specs. However, while it’s probably safe to say that the brand is synonymous with gaming, it’s unclear whether the phone itself was designed specifically for such a market.

Unlike most Razer products, the device looks rather bland lacking the space age look and LED lighting that has been the standard although this probably won’t be an issue as much as the not-so-ergonomic design. There is also a lack of any “gamer-specific” features similar to what the Razer Blade had with the…

Notable Voices and the Week in Review: November 4, 2017

Earlier this week at ThomRainer.com:

4 Reasons Churches Don’t Practice Church DisciplineJeremy Kimble

Churches reject the practice of church discipline for lots of reasons. Some believe the practice doesn’t comport with the biblical concept of love. Related to that idea, some will point out that none of us are perfect, and therefore we should not be focused on getting rid of people when they sin. Still others maintain that the church can err in their practice of church discipline since the church is filled with fallible, sinful human beings. Finally, some maintain such a practice is far too invasive of private lives.

15 Absolutely Essential Questions to Ask Before Hiring a Staff MemberMarty Duren

To the oft regret of many, the search and interview process is not always adequate. Even with the best of intentions, a new staff member—it may become quickly apparent—is the wrong hire. Bill Hybels long ago suggested the 3-C framework (character, competency, chemistry), while others add a fourth: calling. The essential questions proposed below fit within the C-framework, whether three or four C’s are used.

Digital initiative aimed at occasional church visitors gets positive results

According to Church of England attendance statistics for 2015, 85 per cent of the population will visit a church over the course of a year. However, only 2 per cent call themselves regular church attenders

To combat one of the Church’s biggest conundrums, Church of England – Birmingham created a free resource called soul[food]. The pilot initiative was aimed at getting occasional church visitors to attend services more often.

Rev Rhiannon King, Director of Mission for Church of England – Birmingham and one of the originators of the initiative, explained: “We wanted to provide a very easy way for people who only come to church occasionally to follow up their experience.

“Often when people come for things like weddings and Christmas, they leave in droves, never to be seen again.

“Even the most savvy and welcoming church cannot follow them all up.”

The creators of soul[food] made a pocket-sized card that informs people how to receive thoughtful but light-touch messages to their phone on the theme of the service they attended.

A pilot survey of 397 soul[food] subscribers, which included committed Christian subscribers and sceptics, proved the new resource to be effective.

It found:

  • 86 per cent said that the messages left them wanting more
  • 67 per cent said the messages made them want to explore more
  • 61 per cent said they see things differently as a result of the messages

Rev King said: “Although our primary target is always non-believers, we know that…
