Does Christianity Make an Appearance in the New Peanuts Film?

It’s that time of year again—Christmas decorations are out in full force whether you want to see them or not, people have begun their Christmas shopping, and theCharlie Brown Christmas special is airing soon! The Charlie Brown Christmas special is a tradition that many families in America partake in, and what makes the cartoon so significant is the fact that there is an unedited gospel message from Luke presented for every viewer.

In a time where our country seems to sensor religious messages left and right, it is remarkable that this film continues to air on national television. Jesse Carey, editor for RELEVANT Magazine, has written an article titled How ‘Peanuts’ Took Faith to Culture.

As Carey points out, the Charlie Brown Christmas Special was not always beloved. He explains,

Even when the Christmas special first aired in the mid-’60s, the decision to include the Bible passage was controversial. But Schulz’s adamance and non-compromising creative vision paid off. That year, nearly half of the country tuned in to watch.

Considering the special has been aired consistently for five decades, it’s arguably one of the most broadcasted pieces of Scripture in history.”

Was U.S. Aid Worker in Afghanistan Killed for Her Newfound Christian Faith?

As U.S. aid worker Lisa Akbari left the gym at her apartment complex Dec. 23 in Kabul, Afghanistan, someone fatally shot her.

A few miles from the attack, Afghan police arrested a mullah, or Muslim scholar, who lives at the same complex, authorities said. He was injured during the arrest and had to be hospitalized. As of Monday, he had not been questioned.

But investigators found documents in the mullah’s apartment linking him to terrorist groups, according to Kabul District Police Chief Fraidoon Obaidi.

Akbari, a 25-year-old American, lived in Afghanistan for three years. Mayana Aliah Akbari told CNN her sister recently become a Christian and had been making efforts to share her faith.

“We’re not sure if that’s the exact reason for her death,” Mayana said. “She wanted to spread the word. I guess she said the words to the wrong person.”

Akbari moved to Afghanistan in part to learn about her heritage. Her mother is from Iran and her father from Afghanistan.

“She was always wanting to learn more about Dad’s culture,” Mayana told CNN. She also “wanted to help women and children … have more education and rights.”

Akbari’s friend, Tahirah Spears, told me Akbari loved working in Afghanistan.

“She really wanted to make a difference in the lives of people who were not allotted the freedom we have here in the United States,” Spears said. If Akbari could make a difference to someone else, “she went for it without even caring about her own safety.”

According to Akbari’s LinkedIn profile, she worked most recently for the Colombo Plan, a foreign aid organization based in Sri Lanka. The organization has a program in Afghanistan, and Akbari wrote that she worked on a women’s shelter capacity assessment throughout the country.

For four years, Akbari worked for the U.S. Army as a research manager for the Karadah Project International.

“Her contributions to our mission were both critical and essential to our success,” project founder Rick Burns commented on LinkedIn.

In September 2012 and December 2014, Akbari worked as a contracted consultant for the Christian relief organization World Vision in Badghis, Herat, and Ghor provinces, evaluating the organization’s Food for Education project in western Afghanistan.

Jim Alexander, World Vision’s Afghanistan national director, wrote in a statement that the organization “lost a valued colleague” and sympathized with Akbari’s family.

“Our prayers go out to them and to her friends who must be so deeply shocked and grieving during this time,” Alexander said.
The family’s loss “feels like a living nightmare,” Mayana Akbari wrote on Facebook.
“I know God got back his angel and is proud of you for all that you’ve done on earth while you were still living,” she said in a post.

The 2015 Miss Universe Pageant ends with arguably, the biggest TV mistake of the year. Host MC Steve Harvey, instead of announcing Colombia as the first runner up, declares her as the winner and new Miss Universe. After several minutes, he returns to the stage to apologize and make things right. Awkwardness then ensues as some of the audience cheers while others boo and Miss Philippines comes down to accept her.

Your Crown will not be given to another person. It is good to prayer against mistake. If it was a Kings decree that cannot be changed, it would have gone to the wrong person.

Driverless Car Rules Perplexing, says Google

Google has criticised the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) in California for insisting driverless cars must have a fully licensed driver behind the wheel.

On Wednesday, the DMV published draft regulations which outline how the technology could be used on the roads.

The regulations say truly driverless cars would be “initially excluded” from operation.

Google’s director of self-driving cars, Chris Urmson, said the move was “perplexing”.

“This maintains the same old status quo and falls short on allowing this technology to reach its full potential, while excluding those who need to get around but cannot drive,” he wrote in his blog.

“We’ve heard countless stories from people who need a fully self-driving car today. People with health conditions ranging from vision problems to multiple sclerosis to autism to epilepsy who are frustrated with their dependence on others for even simple errands.”

Safety record

Google argues that driverless cars are much safer than manually driven cars, because they eliminate the human error that causes a majority of collisions.

The technology has inspired a web game by Made With Monster Love which demonstrates the effectiveness of computer control over human intervention.

Google said its vehicles had been involved in only 16 minor incidents during six years of testing, with humans in other cars to blame.

“We’ve seen in our own testing that drivers can’t be trusted to dip in and out of the task of driving when the car is encouraging them to sit back and relax,” said Mr Urmson.

However, the technology is still being improved and in November, one of Google’s cars was pulled over for driving too cautiously.

Fully automatic

Some of the driverless cars Google has been testing in California do not have any manual controls such as steering wheels or pedals.

The DMV’s draft regulations would prevent residents from riding in those vehicles until their safety could be assessed in “subsequent regulatory packages”.

“The draft regulations are designed to address complex questions related to vehicle safety, certification, operator responsibilities, licensing and registration, privacy, and cybersecurity,” the DMV said.

A public consultation on the draft will take place in the new year.
