Pope Francis: ‘Many Grave Sins Were Committed Against the Native People of America in the Name of God’

Christian Post Report – Pope Francis arrives at the international airport in La Paz, Bolivia July 9, 2015.

Pope Francis apologized Thursday for what he called the Roman Catholic Church’s complicity in committing “grave sins” against Native Americans “in the name of God” during the oppression of Latin America in the colonial era.

In an address in Bolivia at the Second World Meeting of Popular Movements, a congress of global activists working to mobilize and help the poor, Pope Francis also called for a global social movement to break down the “new colonialism” that has exploited the poor and promoted inequality and materialism according to a report in The New York Times.

“Some may rightly say, ‘When the pope speaks of colonialism, he overlooks certain actions of the church,’ ” said Francis. “I say this to you with regret: Many grave sins were committed against the native people of America in the name of God.”

He continued: “I humbly ask forgiveness, not only for the offense of the church herself, but also for crimes committed against the native peoples during the so-called conquest of America.”

Bolivia, according to the report, was severely exploited during Spanish rule. The country’s silver deposits helped finance the Spanish empire, bankroll European colonialism in other places and filled the treasury of the Vatican.
Evo Morales, Bolivia’s president is a longtime leftist critic of the church praised Pope Francis – the first pope ever elected from Latin America – prior to the pope making his statement.

“For the first time, I feel like I have a pope: Pope Francis,” said Morales said.

When the pope addressed the issues of inequality in the new economic system, the people cheered when he encouraged them to organize and fight against exploitation and oppression.

“I would even say that the future of humanity is in great measure in your own hands, through your ability to organize and carry out creative alternatives, through your daily efforts to ensure the three Ls — labor, lodging, land,” said Francis.

“Human beings and nature must not be at the service of money,” he added. “Let us say no to an economy of exclusion and inequality, where money rules, rather than service. That economy kills. That economy excludes. That economy destroys Mother Earth.”

Despite his condemnation of global economic system however, Pope Francis said he did not have a solution to it.

“Don’t expect a recipe from this pope,” he said. “Neither the pope nor the church have a monopoly on the interpretation of social reality or the proposal of solution to contemporary issues. I dare say no recipe exists.”

Pope Francis Calls Unfettered Pursuit of Money ‘Dung of the Devil’ That Enslaves People and Ruins Society

Pope Francis (Photo: Reuters/David Mercado)

Christian Post Report – Pope Francis looks to the side as he attends a World Meeting of Popular Movements with Bolivia’s President Evo Morales (not pictured) in Santa Cruz, Bolivia, July 9, 2015. Pope Francis on Thursday urged the downtrodden to change the world economic order, denouncing a “new colonialism” by agencies that impose austerity programs and calling for the poor to have the “sacred rights” of labor, lodging and land. In one of the longest, most passionate and sweeping speeches of his pontificate, the Argentine-born pope also asked forgiveness for the sins committed by the Roman Catholic Church in its treatment of native Americans during what he called the “so-called conquest of America.”

Pope Francis has called the unfettered pursuit of money “the dung of the devil” in a strongly worded condemnation of the global treatment of poor people. Speaking on Thursday at the World Meeting of Popular Movements in Santa Cruz, Bolivia, Francis also told Christians it is their “commandment” to fight for the “just distribution of the fruits of the Earth.”

Francis, who is on a tour of several South American countries, told the Bolivian faithful that as the scientific community warns, “irreversible harm” is being done to the ecosystem, which is “brutally punishing” entire populations. He then referred to the “unfettered pursuit of money” as the “dung of the devil,” which leaves behind the service of the common good:

“Once capital becomes an idol and guides people’s decisions, once greed for money presides over the entire socioeconomic system, it ruins society, it condemns and enslaves men and women, it destroys human fraternity, it sets people against one another and, as we clearly see, it even puts at risk our common home.”

In his lenghty speech, which can be read at full on the Vatican Radio website, the Roman Catholic Church leader also said that “working for a just distribution of the fruits of the Earth and human labor” is not simply a moral obligation, but a “commandment” for Christians.

“It is about giving to the poor and to peoples what is theirs by right. The universal destination of goods is not a figure of speech found in the Church’s social teaching. It is a reality prior to private property. Property, especially when it affects natural resources, must always serve the needs of peoples. And those needs are not restricted to consumption,” Francis continued.

“It is not enough to let a few drops fall whenever the poor shake a cup which never runs over by itself. Welfare programs geared to certain emergencies can only be considered temporary responses. They will never be able to replace true inclusion, an inclusion which provides worthy, free, creative, participatory and solidary work.”

American Catholic priest James Martin said in a Twitter message that Francis “just used the strongest language I can remember a pope using about the rights of the poor and of social justice.”

While the pope has been accused by some conservative commentators, such as American radio host Rush Limbaugh, of promoting Marxism, Francis has insisted in several speeches that his remarks on the poor have nothing to do with politics.

“Oh, this priest speaks about poverty too much, this bishop talks about poverty, this Christian, this sister talks about poverty. Well, they’re a bit communist, aren’t they?” Francis said back in June.

He added, however, that “poverty is at the very center of the Gospel: If we remove poverty from the Gospel, no one would be able to understand anything about the message of Jesus.”

In the concluding remarks of his speech in Bolivia, Francis said that the future of humanity does not lie in the hands of the world’s leaders, but in the hands of the people of the world.

“It is fundamentally in the hands of peoples and in their ability to organize. It is in their hands, which can guide with humility and conviction this process of change. I am with you,” Francis urged.

“Let us together say from the heart: no family without lodging, no rural worker without land, no laborer without rights, no people without sovereignty, no individual without dignity, no child without childhood, no young person without a future, no elderly person without a venerable old age.”

Megachurch Pastor Ron Carpenter Jr. Says People Can Be Born Predisposed to Be Gay, but ‘Jesus Can Straighten’ It

Ron Carpenter Jr. (Photo: Screen Grab via YouTube)

Christian Post Report – Megachurch pastor, Ron Carpenter Jr.

In a sermon which has ruffled some of his congregants and general critics alike since he delivered it last Wednesday, megachurch pastor Ron Carpenter Jr. of Redemption World Outreach Center in Greenville, South Carolina, says he believes people can be born predisposed to homosexuality but “Jesus can straighten” the iniquity.

“I believe much of homosexual activity is iniquity. Doctors don’t believe it, they say they couldn’t find a gene. Well, sin don’t have a gene,” said Carpenter in a recording of the sermon titled “Biblical Truth on Same-Sex Marriage” that was posted to YouTube. The sermon is almost 1 hour and 20 minutes but he shared his personal thoughts beginning at the 1 hour 12-minute mark of the video.

“You can’t open up somebody’s body and find sin. The Bible says iniquity travels three and four generations. The word ‘iniquity’ is not sin. The word ‘iniquity’ means bent or twisted and everybody is born bent toward something. So I disagree with a lot of people who say you can’t be born that way, if it’s an iniquity you can be,” said Carpenter.

“An infant already predisposed to alcoholism, an infant already predisposed to never holding down a relationship, an infant already predisposed to panic attacks, an infant already predisposed to diabetes, and an infant already predisposed to a twisted lifestyle,” he said, indicating homosexuality.

“That’s why Jesus said you have to be born again. Because the first time I was born, I was born (bending), but here comes Jesus (straightening). Somebody tell your neighbor Jesus will straighten things out,” he continued.

Carpenter explained that he could not support same-sex marriage because the Bible condemns it, and because he fears God he intends to maintain that position.

“If God forbids me to bless it, I don’t care what’s happening in our culture. I fear God. I am man enough and I love you enough for you to be mad at me right now. But prophetically, you’re finding it hard to be mad at me,” he said.

He then asserted that homosexuality is generational and will only get worse with each generation if it isn’t dealt with, according to Scripture.

“I think with homosexuality, somewhere, something got planted that wasn’t supposed to be there. Somewhere in you, your bloodline or in your family something got planted. Something God didn’t want there, something God didn’t intend and the twist began. And every generation commits the sins greater than their father committed it,” added Carpenter.

“So the reason you can dance in the street is because your father had to hide in a closet. But if you’re dealing and struggling with homosexuality, according to the Word, you’re not the first generation in your family that’s dealt with it. You was [sic] just the first one that lived in a society that would let you speak,” he noted.

Moments before he made an altar call addressing those in his congregation who are struggling with homosexuality, he spoke frankly to the church.

“There are people that you want your lifestyle and you don’t want to hear another word that I got to say, and I release you and I love you and I’ll be here if you need me. And we’ll be here if you need us and we’re not mad at anybody,” he said.

He continued, however: “I believe the Spirit of the Lord is in this place. There’s another group of people that that lifestyle has touched your life and it’s not fun and you’re not happy. You’re in turmoil, you’re in struggle. You’re one of those statistics I’ve read. You don’t want it, you don’t like it, you feel isolated, you feel alone. You hear the jokes and you want to crawl under the table because you don’t want anyone at the table to know your struggle.”

Several people came forward after he made the altar call and he prayed for them.

Two days later, after sparking a broad discussion online with his comments, Carpenter addressed his critics in a Facebook post.

“I knew Wednesday night when I addressed these current issues it would open me up to many opinions … I braced myself for that. I don’t know that I got everything right, I gave it my best shot. I welcome honest discussions on my Facebook page and give you the right and privilege to disagree with me. However, vulgarity will not be tolerated and will immediately be removed from my page. No matter what your opinions may be, I just asked for everyone to keep it clean … thanks Ron C,” he noted last Friday.

Tay Hagood, a lesbian, was among those who disagreed with Carpenter.

“I am a lesbian. I found comfort in knowing that i can be homosexual and saved, and that i can still go to heaven. But, then I’m struggling with the not inheriting the kingdom part. I love my partner, who is obviously of the same sex. We put God in all that we do, and he still blesses us,” wrote Hagood.

“Do I throw our love away, and be alone because I’m physically not attracted to men? I’d be lying to myself and living a lie to pretend to be heterosexual. It all boils down to which misery works best for me. … 1: not inheriting the kingdom because i love my girlfriend; 2: inherit the kingdom by being alone or heterosexual, and still be miserable. I love the Lord, but I can’t help who I am, nor who I love,” she ended.

In reply, Carpenter noted: “Thank you for your honesty. … God doesn’t want you miserable, God wants your life to be abundant and you to fulfill your purpose … know that you are on my heart and I will pray for you.”

Chicago Radio Host Dan Bernstein Implies Christian QB Russell Wilson Might Be Gay; Says He Doesn’t ‘Have to Live a Lie’

Christian Post Report – Just days after Christian Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson declared that he and his popular singer girlfriend Ciara are engaged in a sexless relationship, outspoken Chicago sports radio host Dan Bernstein suggested that Wilson might be gay and that he doesn’t “have to lie” anymore.

Wilson revealed that he was abstaining from sex with Ciara in an interview with pastor Miles McPherson, a former NFL player, which was posted to YouTube on Sunday.

“I remember she was on tour, she was traveling. I was looking at her in the mirror. She was in the dressing room getting ready to go before she went on stage, and she was sitting there, and God spoke to me and said, ‘I need you to lead her,'” Wilson told McPherson in the interview.

“And I was like, ‘Really?’ And He was like, ‘No, I want you to lead her.’ So I told her, ‘What would you do if we took all of that extra stuff off the table and just did it Jesus’ way?’ And she was relieved,'” he added.

The revelation took the Internet by storm, attracting praise from some Christians but scorn and skepticism from critics like Bernstein who did not hold back on how he felt about Wilson’s decision in a discussion on WSCR 670 The Score on “Boers & Bernstein” Tuesday.

NFL Player Russell Wilson pictured with singer Ciara.

“If you start to piece this all together, I think you come away with a pretty easy-to-reach conclusion here,” Bernstein said of Wilson who divorced his first wife, Ashton Meem, in 2014 after a two-year marriage. “The whole thing, don’t you? Don’t you just wish he could feel comfortable enough to be a little more truthful with all of it?”

“Russell, it’s OK. It’s OK,” noted Bernstein.

When his partner on the show, Terry Boers, appeared to not get what he was suggesting, the outspoken host went further.

“I don’t think you’re quite getting what I am getting at,” said Bernstein. “Put the pieces together. The whole Russell Wilson thing — all of the artifice here. Everything that’s going on. All the strangeness. All of the stuff with the first wife, and the discomfort there … and this isn’t a new pattern. And, I understand there were times past where you felt you had to live a lie. This isn’t that time. This is quite the opposite of that. You don’t have to live a lie. You don’t have to be artificial.”

According to one report, Wilson’s first marriage ended because of his ex-wife’s unproven “dalliances” with other players.

“My point is this: With every day that goes by, we live in a world that is much more understanding and much more supportive and would just say, ‘OK, that’s cool, and get on with the football.’ I don’t think this one is too tough based on the evidence presented. Do you have enough for Tom Cruise?” Bernstein ended.

Boko Haram Offers to Free 200-Plus Chibok Schoolgirls in Exchange for Release of Imprisoned Militant Leaders

boko haram (Photo: Reuters/Akintunde Akinleye)

Christian Post Report – Students join a protest demanding the release of the abducted secondary school girls in the remote village of Chibok, along a road in Lagos May 12, 2014. The leader of the Nigerian Islamist rebel group Boko Haram has said he will release more than 200 schoolgirls abducted by his fighters last month in exchange for prisoners, according to a video seen by Agence France-Presse on Monday.

The Nigerian terrorist outfit Boko Haram has offered the release over 200 kidnapped schoolgirls, who were abducted from a boarding school over a 14 months ago, in exchange for the release of multiple Boko Haram militant leaders who are being held by the Nigerian government.

A human rights activist who is close to the negotiations between Boko Haram and the Nigerian government told The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity that the terrorist group’s renewed offer includes only the release of the 200-plus girls who were kidnapped from a school in the northern Nigerian town of Chibok in the early hours of April 15, 2014.

Although the militant group kidnapped a total of 276 girls, some managed to escape and an estimation of 219 girls remain detained by the Nigerian ISIS affiliate. The girls are believed to have been forced into marriages with Boko Haram fighters or trained to become suicide bombers.

International human rights lawyer, Nina Shea, the director of the U.S.-based Hudson Institute’s Center for Religious Freedom, told The Christian Post in a Thursday that the Nigerian government should jump on this opportunity to secure the girls’ freedom.

“Governments regularly engage in prisoner exchanges with their enemies, including the US government as we saw in the recent Bowe Bergdahl case,” Shea explained. “The Chibok school girls are totally innocent and their release should be pursued including by negotiated prisoner exchanges.”

Although 219 girls are believed to still be held by Boko Haram, Shea said there is enough reason to believe that a few of those girls are likely dead.

“I have spoken to several of the Chibok girls who escaped in the first two days and would not be surprised if not all the missing Chibok schoolgirls have survived their ordeal,” Shea wrote. “Some serious observers suspect that some of the girls are the female suicide bombers that have become common over the past year. Some of the girls have been forcibly married, according to Boko Haram leaders, and thus have been abused as sex slaves.”

“These girls, most of whom are Christian, have borne unspeakable persecution and every possibility should be pursued to rescue them,” she added.

The girls’ kidnapping sparked international outcry that cultivated in the hashtag movement #BringBackOurGilrs and criticism toward the Nigerian government for not doing enough to free the schoolgirls.

AP reports that Boko Haram’s offer reboots negotiations that occurred last year between the group and former President Goodluck Jonathan that would have secured the release of the 219 schoolgirls in exchange for 16 Boko Haram militants detained by the government.

The AP was also told by Fred Eno, a Nigerian who has been negotiating with Boko Haram for over a year, that “another window of opportunity” has opened. He added that since President Muhammadu Buhari took office just five weeks ago, there is now a “clean slate” for the negotiations, which previously fell through under Jonathan’s administration.

Eno asserted that as Boko Haram’s violence in the last nine days has lead to over 350 deaths, the increase in violence is consistent with group’s attempts to gain negotiating leverage.

Presidential advisor, Femi Adesina, said last Saturday that the government is open to continued negotiations with the terrorist group that has caused widespread havoc in the northeastern part of the country.

“Most wars, however furious or vicious, often end around the negotiation table,” Adesina told AP.

In March, Boko Haram also kidnapped over 400 women and children from the northern Nigerian town of Damasak days after a mass grave filled with slit-throat victims was found under a bridge in the town.

An Amnesty International report released in April states that Boko Haram has kidnapped over 2,000 women and children.

Finding the Next Billy Graham In The Gutter

Finding The Next Billy Graham In The Gutter

Christian Post Report – Christians should never stop doing evangelism or forget about the transformative power of the Holy Spirit as they engage the culture; those who oppose the Church today could be its leaders tomorrow, Russell Moore wrote in his new book, Onward: Engaging the Culture Without Losing the Gospel.

In part one of his July 1 phone interview with The Christian Post, Moore, president of the Southern Baptist Convention’s Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission, pointed out that the Church can thrive, as it always has, in a culture that identifies it as “not normal.”

In this part two of the interview, Moore explains why, whenever he feels himself growing discouraged about the future, he reminds himself, “the next Billy Graham might be drunk right now.”

Remembering that opponents are themselves like Christians — sinners for whom Christ died — changes the way you see them, he said. Additionally, those opponents may not only be brothers and sisters in Christ tomorrow, they may become church leaders.

Tamar Braxton Opens Up to Bishop T.D. Jakes About Sisters’ Drama on ‘Braxton Family Values’ (Video)

Braxton family (Photo: WE tv)

Christian Post Report – The Braxton sisters from Left: Toni, Towanda, Traci, Tamar, Trina and mother, Evelyn, star in “Braxton Family Values” on Thursdays.

Tamar Braxton, the Christian singer and one of the five sisters who star in WE tv’s “Braxton Family Values,” is leaning on Bishop T.D. Jakes to help her overcome the issues within her family.

Tamar, 38, will open up to Jakes, the senior pastor of The Potter’s House in Dallas, Texas, in the episode called “Divine Intervention” after getting into another heated argument with her sisters. In a one-on-one meeting with Jakes, Tamar tells him that she believes 85 to 90 percent of the issues with her sisters are career related.

“It’s very difficult, because I’m alone. I don’t have the support from my siblings and I really want that,” Tamar tells Jakes on the show. ” It’s just very difficult to feel ostracized and to feel when wonderful things happen you can’t share it with your family.”

Jakes gives Tamar a piece of advice about enjoying her career, regardless of the praise or criticism she receives.

“Since you’ve waited all your life to have this moment, isn’t important that you enjoy that moment without the nagging gnawing inner voice of criticism that says ‘this moment is someone tainted because somebody I love didn’t clap for me,'”Jakes questions the singer. “You cannot deny yourself of what you have worked hard to get and how God has blessed you, especially if you’re sure in your heart that you’ve been fair.”

When Tamar, her mother, Evelyn, and sisters, Toni, Towanda, Traci and Trina gather for a group session with Jakes, she opens up about feeling that she completely lost her family.

“I miss you all terribly and I love you all. More than anything,” an emotional Tamar tells her sisters. “..I have my dreams and all of my aspirations, but if somebody told me the price for all of that was to give up my family I would have said ‘that’s ok.'”

However, it seems her sisters may have a hard time accepting her emotional speech. Exclusive clips of Tamar speaking to her sisters and Bishop Jakes can be found below. “Braxton Family Values” airs at 9 p.m. ET Thursdays on WE tv.

Tamar has been vocal about her faith in the past, and previously opened up about her belief in God keeping her balanced when speaking to Flaunt magazine.

“Both of my parents at one time were pastors of their own churches and I learned a lot from that but not until I was an adult did I understand it and know for myself,” Tamar told Flaunt Magazine. “That’s what changed things for me. That’s where accepting myself comes in. There’s no way I can fake the funk. If you do it, how long can you do it for?”

Si Robertson: "There's No Such Thing As An Atheist!"

Christian Post Report – NEW YORK — ‘Duck Dynasty’ star Si Robertson, who’s known for being an outspoken Christian, told CP Voice earlier this week that as a Vietnam veteran he knows there’s no such thing as an atheist because when people find themselves in a life-threatening situation they cry out to God, saying, “please help me.”

Discussing his new film “Faith of Our Fathers,” which tells the story of two Vietnam veterans — one a devout Christian and the other a skeptic — Robertson explained that the bonds soldiers develop in battle are “thicker than blood, because they’ve faced death together.”
