‘Transformers’ Cinematic Universe Like Marvel Being Created

“Transformers: Age of Extinction” cast members Nicola Peltz, Mark Wahlberg, Li Bingbing and Jack Reynor pose for pictures before the European premiere of the movie in Berlin, Germany, June 29, 2014.

Christian Post Report – Paramount Pictures has big plans for the “Transformers” franchise. Beyond plans for more film sequels, Paramount wants to create a “Transformers” cinematic universe, much like the one created by Marvel. The company is negotiating to get the help of Akiva Goldsman, writer of “A Beautiful Mind,” to put their plan into action.

As reported in Deadline, Goldsman is not going to write any of the “Transformers” film, but will look for and oversee an assemblage of writers who will come together, brainstorm and write the upcoming films in the universe. This concept, the report says, is borrowed from James Cameron’s tactics with the three “Avatar” sequels and that of Disney’s strategy to put together more sequels and spinoffs for “Star Wars.”

Goldsman is supposed to facilitate meetings with producers Steven Spielberg, Lorenzo di Bonaventura and director Michael Bay, as well as writers who will form part of a “writer’s room.” This group will reportedly “incubate ideas for a potential multi-part ‘Transformers’ sequel, and come up with potential spinoff films based on the billion-dollar franchise culled from the Hasbro toy line.”

The last film of the franchise, the 2014 “Transformers: Age of Extinction” was not considered a box office hit, but according to another report in Deadline, the film is 2014’s “most valuable blockbuster” grossing $1.1 billion worldwide, including $324 million gross earnings in China alone. This almost matched the gross earnings of the 2011 “Transformers: Dark of the Moon.” For Paramount, this meant that the franchise is still going strong. All four Transformers films earned Paramount a whopping $4 billion.

The Deadline report also mentions that this development and writing process must happen quickly, as director Michael Bay will be soon occupied with directing the Benghazi film “13 Hours.” It would be ideal for him to start working on the next “Transformers” film after he finishes “13 Hours.”

‘Better Call Saul’ Finale Spoilers News: Vince Gilligan Talks Show’s Future, Co-Creator Teases Season Finale

AMC’s “Better Call Saul”

Christian Post Report – Things are definitely getting more exciting as the first season of AMC’s hugely-popular TV show series “Better Call Saul” continues with this week’s penultimate episode titled “Pimento.” And just like its parent show “Breaking Bad,” Bob Odenkirk’s prequel story of the criminal attorney, Saul Goodman, just keeps getting better as it nears its season’s culmination.

Peter Gould and Vince Gilligan shared some insights on what to expect during the series finale.

“I will say what happens in the rest of the show surprised us. These characters went in directions we weren’t expecting. The cast added such layers to these folks. This is the glory of television. We watched what the actors were doing as we shot the first few, and realized that some of our ideas of who these people were could be developed more,” Gould told HitFix.

Gould added further that fans should expect “some twists and turns” as BCS nears its conclusion.

“That’s the best thing I could say. But I would say the last two episodes especially surprised us completely,” he went on to say.

During the panel screening of “Pimento,” Vince Gilligan meanwhile shared some information on where the story will pick up should it get served with another season. The creator admits he and Gould still don’t have any idea where to start.

“Do we spend some time during the period, the epoch, of Breaking Bad? Do we show what happened in between the scenes of Walt and Jesse? Is there more to tell in the Omaha years? These are all questions we do not have answers to yet,” he told The Guardian.

However, no matter which storyline “Better Call Saul” will tread on to, Gilligan assures its followers that it would certainly be a worthwhile ride.

“The fans who pay strict attention, we want to honor them for that. We want reward them for that,” Gilligan said. “We will make mistakes. There’s no doubt about that, but we intend not to. We intend to keep them to as small a number of mistakes as possible.”

“Better Call Saul” airs this Monday, March 30 on AMC.

Muhammadu Buhari Wins Nigerian Elections; CANAN Says Outgoing Christian President Goodluck Jonathan Acted ‘Heroically’ by Peacefully Conceding Defeat to Muslim Rival

All Progressives Congresses presidential candidate and Nigeria’s former military ruler Muhammodu Buhari (C) casts his vote in Daura, March 28, 2015.

Christian Post Report – The Christian Association of Nigerian-Americans has said that outgoing President Goodluck Jonathan, a Christian, has acted “heroically” by peacefully conceding the presidency to his rival, Muhammadu Buhari, a Muslim. CANAN said that it had prayed for a peaceful outcome, and expressed hope that Buhari will be able to drive out terror group Boko Haram from Nigeria.

“I think President Goodluck Jonathan has etched his name in gold by the single action he took yesterday to concede defeat and congratulate the winner of the election. It is unprecedented in Nigeria’s history, at the national level, to have a president concede defeat so quickly, even before the final results are released,” pastor Laolu Akande, the executive director of CANAN, told The Christian Post in a phone interview on Wednesday.

He added that although Jonathan has left a number of questions regarding corruption and his administration’s ability to provide security for the Nigerian people, the outgoing president has “reinvented himself” with his response to losing the election, which was “no less than heroic.”

Buhari, a 72-year-old retired general who first came to power following a military coup in 1983, has reinvented himself as a democrat, and focused his campaign on tackling corruption and putting an end to Boko Haram’s terror attacks.

Supporters of the presidential candidate Muhammadu Buhari and his All Progressive Congress (APC) party celebrate in Kano March 31, 2015. Nigeria’s opposition APC declared an election victory on Tuesday for former military ruler Buhari and said Africa’s most populous nation was witnessing history with its first democratic transfer of power.

Reuters noted that Buhari won 15.4 million votes to Jonathan’s 13.3 million, which was enough to declare him the winner on Tuesday.

The president-elect also praised Jonathan for peacefully giving up power.

“President Jonathan was a worthy opponent and I extend the hand of fellowship to him,” Buhari said.

“We have proven to the world that we are people who have embraced democracy. We have put one-party state behind us.”

When conceding defeat, Jonathan told his supporters: “I promised the country free and fair elections. I have kept my word.”

He added: “Nobody’s ambition is worth the blood of any Nigerian. The unity, stability and progress of our dear country is more important than anything else.”

Akande said that he’s not surprised by Buhari’s victory, and revealed that Nigerian-Americans have been praying for a peaceful resolution to the elections.

“We want to thank God for making sure that this presidential election has ended in peace. CANAN, and other groups in the U.S., we started praying, we prayed every day in the month of March for peace and for a free and fair election,” he told CP.

Nigeria’s President Goodluck Jonathan casts his ballot in his ward at Otuoke, Bayelsa State, March 28, 2015.

“We want to thank God because what happened yesterday was nothing short of divine,” he added. “We can see the hand of God in all that has happened, and CANAN wants to commend all Nigerian Americans and all the groups that prayed.”

Unlike Jonathan, a Christian academic who came from Nigeria’s South, Buhari is a Muslim who hails from the less-developed North.

Akande said that he does not think Buhari’s election victory will pose problems for Christians in Nigeria, who make up roughly half of the population.

“Personally, I don’t worry about Mr. Buhari’s attitude to faith. He is a committed Muslim, and I will not antagonize him because of that. I believe that Mr. Buhari is not going to antagonize any Nigerian’s faith,” the CANAN executive director said.

“The Nigerian constitution declares that Nigeria is a secular state.”

Akande added that Buhari has also picked as his vice-president Yemi Osinbajo, a Christian pastor and professor of law, a decision he suggested should also help alleviate worries.

He expressed hopes that Buhari will be able to lead Nigeria to defeat and drive out Boko Haram, which has been waging war in the country for over five years, heavily targeting Christians and all those who stand in its way.

“Certainly that is one of the biggest platforms on which Mr. Buhari ran — [with the] perception of a military ruler, as a former general, who has experience in the area of putting down religious fanaticism,” he continued.

The pastor said that Buhari should look to bring “to a conclusive end the terror of Boko Haram.”

Akande noted that it remains to be seen how Boko Haram will respond to the shift in power in the government, but pointed out that its terror activities have been reduced ever since it attacked and was pushed back by military forces from neighboring countries like Chad and Cameroon.

“What is important to us is that Boko Haram is degraded and ultimately destroyed,” Akande said.

He also noted that there has been “tremendous improvement” in the way the international community has been responding to Boko Haram, especially with the organization of the Multi-National Joint Task Force, approved by the African Union.

The task-force, supported by Nigeria, Chad, Niger, Cameroon and Benin, and consisting of 8,700 troops, is aimed at defeating and bringing to a permanent end the operations of the Islamic extremists.

‘Bates Motel’ Season 3 Spoilers: Freddie Highmore Talks Norman’s Evolution

Bates Motel YouTube Screenshot/ScreenCrush

YouTube Screengrab: A&E’s original TV series ‘Bates Motel’

Christian Post Report – More doses of intrigue and creepiness are to be expected as the hit thriller drama TV series “Bates Motel” continues on its third season this week.

Tthe show’s lead star, Freddie Highmore, talked about his character, Norman Bates, and his gradual evolution to becoming the man it was known in “Psycho” which connects to how its relationship with its mother, Norma Bates (Vera Farmiga), will be played out for the rest of the season.

“I think the way that Norma and Norman’s relationship evolves in the third season is very much one of these equals of two adults battling it out, as opposed to Norman being the son,” Highmore told The Sydney Morning Herald. “I guess there’s always been hints of this sort of husband/wife relationship that Norma and Norman share. And I think it goes a lot more in that direction in the third season.”

“Norman is certainly more grown-up and can manipulate her a lot more than perhaps he would in the past,” he explained. “He stands up to her a lot more control in their relationship, as opposed to merely being led by his mother. He starts to try and lead her.”

Meanwhile, spoiler reports for the upcoming segment titled “Unbreak-able” pointed out that Norman and Emma (Olivia Cooke) will be taking a day off from the motel. This occasion will perhaps tackle more on the Norman-Emma issue.

Furthermore, this episode will also delve deeper into the two counts of mysterious deaths happening in White Pine Bay which will be carried out by the ever-curious Sheriff Alex Romero (Nestor Carbonell).

Will the shady mother-and-son tandem be linked to the cases?

Find out when “Bates Motel” Season 3 airs this Monday, March 30 on the A&E Network.

New X-Files Series News: David Duchovny on New ‘X-Files’ Revival

Christian Post Report – Following last week’s announcement that Fox has already given the needed green-light for the revival of the ’90s phenomenal sci-fi TV series “The X-Files,” the internet once again took off when more information about the upcoming revival show was served by none other than its lead star, David Duchovny.

Playing as the FBI special agent, Fox Mulder, Duchovny was recently interviewed by The New York Times about his new series “Aquarius.” The talk expectedly segued to “X-Files” which he admits wasn’t “really a cult show.”

“It was actually a big hit. People call it a cult show because of the subject matter,” he said.

He went on to confirm that the new take of the story will be consisted of six episodes and will follow on its “Monster of the Week” set-up as well as its expansive mythology.

“We’re gonna do both. I’m pretty sure it’s gonna begin and end with the mythology,” he revealed.

He went on to say that filming for the new segments would happen in Vancouver which, as CBR said, would take advantage of the location’s “misty atmosphere” that will help bring out the show’s signature “spooky tone.”

The 54-year-old New York native further insisted that the new “X-Files” will be the same as before.

“We’re still trying to do the same show. It’s not like were trying to make it 2.0, or whatever the.0 is now. 3.0. We’re gonna make the same show. But it’ll be interesting because Gillian and I are older. I don’t want to act like it’s 20 years ago,” he added.

‘Tekken 7’ to Feature 2 Returning Characters and One New Filipino Fighter

Tekken 7 Youtube Screenshot/ file

Tekken 7 new characters Jin Kazama, Devil Jin, and Josie Rizal

Christian Post Report – “Tekken” executive producer and game director Katsuhiro Harada revealed three characters for “Tekken 7.”

Both Jin Kazama and Devil Jin have returned to the series and will be added to the game on March 31st and April 7, respectively.

Kazama has improved moves with more powerful punches and strikes, and his fighting style is similar to that of a professional boxer. Meanwhile, Devil Jin has laser-fire eyes and though the character looks a lot like Kazama, it has a different fighting style.

Meanwhile, the new character which Harada introduced is named Josie Rizal, the series’ first fighter of Filipino descent. Designed by Mari Shimazaki of Bayonetta fame, the character’s name is a nod to the Philippines’ national hero, Jose Rizal. The character’s clothing is also based on the Philippine flag’s colors, which are red, blue, yellow with a bit of white detailing, and she specializes in both kickboxing and Eskrima, with a bit of muay thai thrown in.

Last year, it was announced that the game will introduce other characters from different parts of the world, and new characters Katarina Alves (Brazilian) and Shaheen (Saudi Arabian) were added to the roster, and both are designed as beginner friendly characters.

Several characters will also be speaking in their native languages, so Leo and Lili will be speaking German and French respectively for the first time in the series, while Claudio, Katarina, and Shaheen will speak their native Italian, Portuguese, and Arabic respectively.

“Tekken 7” has already been released in arcades in Japan on March 18 and the game reportedly has already gained a steady fan base. Bandai Namco has yet to announce when the game will hit other platforms in other territories. The game is expected to make an appearance at EVO 2015.

‘The Real Housewives of Atlanta’ Season 7: Episode 19 ‘Drama Detox’

Real Housewives of Atlanta Bravotv/ The Real Housewives of Atlanta

The ladies do some yoga while on a retreat in the Philippines in The Real Housewives of Atlanta

Christian Post Report – On last Sunday’s episode of “The Real Housewives of Atlanta,” the ladies take Dr. Jeff’s advice to go on a retreat to fix their relationships and they fly to the Philippines, and Nene stays behind as she meets with the creative director of Broadway’s “Cinderella.”

Nene is in New York and meeting with the creative director of “Cinderella.” In a mock British accent, Nene reads her lines and later, when she’s told that she has to improve, she tells him, “I will bring it.” She also said that she would like to use two accents for her character. He tells her that she better “bring it” because her name is on the marquee.

After a 16-hour flight, Claudia, Kenya, Porsha, Demetria, Kandi, Cynthia, and Phaedra arrive in the Philippines. Claudia takes them to a vegan detox resort, and she assigns the biggest room to Phaedra because she’s been having a hard time lately, and Phaedra is openly touched by the gesture. The rest of the ladies are also impressed with their accommodations.

The next morning, Claudia invites Phaedra to lunch so that Phaedra will know that “this isn’t a set up.” Claudia tells her that she too went through a painful divorce.

“I dealt with it in not a great way,” said Claudia. “I drank a lot of wine. I was depressed. I had suicidal thoughts.”

Phaedra appreciates her support, but is not quite willing to talk about Apollo yet. However, she’s glad that Claudia sincerely reached out, and the two of them ended up connecting well and laughing.

Later, Phaedra and Kandi meet for pedicures. They talk about how they both got hurt over miscommunications, but in the end they agree that they’re true friends and that they should stick together. Kandi also hopes that Phaedra can find it in her heart to forgive Kenya.

Over a group dinner of smuggled chicken and alcohol, Claudia tries her best to help others mend fences. Cynthia tries to apologize to Phaedra for confronting her about Mr. Chocolate a few weeks ago, but Phaedra ignores her. This causes Porsha to giggle.

Claudia calls Porsha out for giggling, and Kenya and Demetria accuse Porsha of undoing all the efforts the other ladies made so far. Exasperated, Claudia stands up and clinks a glass with her spoon to get their attention, but she ends up breaking it.

Later, Kenya says that she wants to mend her relationship with Phaedra after Apollo lied about Kenya sending him flirty text messages. Phaedra still has her doubts, so Kenya asks her if she’s willing to have a private conversation, and Phaedra agrees. The women cheer and toast to “doing the work.”

“The Real Housewives of Atlanta” airs on Sundays at 8 p.m. on Bravo.

Christian Reconstructionism Is Not ‘America’s ISIS,’ Says Religious History Expert Molly Worthen

ISIS (Photo: Reuters/Stringer)

Militant Islamist fighters waving flags, travel in vehicles as they take part in a military parade along the streets of Syria’s northern Raqqa province, June 30, 2014.

Christian Post Report – An expert on the history of American evangelical denominations is taking issue with the claim by some that Reconstructionism, a strict faction within conservative Christianity, is America’s version of the Islamic State.

Christian Reconstructionism, which calls for the application of biblical law in society, has been compared in recent months to the Middle Eastern terrorist group that’s best known in the United States as ISIS.

Molly Worthen, an assistant history professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, is an expert on religious and intellectual history in North America.

In an interview with The Christian Post, Worthen explained that it’s “grossly misleading” to call Christian Reconstructionists “America’s ISIS.”

“To state only the most obvious difference, most Reconstructionists — even those very few who endorse, in theory, reprehensible practices like the stoning of gay people — have not called for terrorism or the violent overthrow of legitimate government,” Worthen explained.

“Reconstructionists have usually called for Christians to use the institutions of liberal democracy to elect and empower likeminded leaders.”

  • Rushdoony
    (Photo: Chalcedon Foundation®)
Rousas John Rushdoony, considered the father of the Christian Reconstructionist Movement.

Worthen added that comparison of the two entities “misunderstands the goals, character, and origin of both movements.”

Founded by Calvinist philosopher and writer Rousas John Rushdoony, Reconstructionism is also known as Dominionism or Theonomy.

The movement became organized during the 1970s courtesy R.J. Rushdoony’s magnum opus, The Institutes of Biblical Law.

Ever since ISIS garnered headlines for its brutality and growing strength, some have compared Reconstructionism to the Islamic extremist organization.

Last September, a blog entry on the website The Pink Flamingo described Reconstructionism and ISIS as “two peas in a pod.”

On the Americans United for Separation of Church and State’s blog “Wall of Separation,” Rob Boston also argued that the two movements are comparable.

“When you read the platform of the Reconstructionists, you can’t help but notice its similarities to the goals of ISIS, the Taliban and like-minded bands of extremists,” Boston wrote.

“In both cases, there is great hostility to ideas like women’s rights, LGBT rights, pluralism, democracy and religious freedom. The irony, of course, is that both factions would consider the other ‘heathens’ or ‘apostates’ worthy of death.”

Boston added that, unlike ISIS, the Reconstructionists “have nothing like their own party and (thankfully) no military arm.”

While ideological opponents have occasionally accused conservative Christians of supporting or being influenced by Reconstructionism, Worthen told CP said influence “has been minimal.”

“If by ‘Reconstructionism’ we mean self-conscious followers of Rushdoony who actively seek a theocratic regime governed by Mosaic law, we are talking about a tiny number of people whom most Christians view as extremists,” Worthen continued. “I believe journalists have generally exaggerated the importance of the personal connections between Rushdoony and his acolytes and more mainstream Protestant activists.”

Worthen did add, however, that Reconstructionism is important when understood as “the far right-wing expression of a broader, more diffuse impulse in conservative Christianity, a backlash against the values of Enlightenment secularism and cultural pluralism, and a desire to reassert the Protestant establishment that governed American culture for so long.”

“In this sense, Christian Reconstructionists are not a tiny group of extremists, but a group of activists and thinkers whose platform should compel other Christians to think through their own assumptions about the role of Christianity in American culture and law,” Worthen added.

In the present, organizations that promote the ideology of Reconstructionism include the American Vision, the Institute for Christian Economics, and the Chalcedon Foundation.

Mark R. Rushdoony, president of the Chalcedon Foundation and son of the-late R.J. Rushdoony, told CP that he believes “Reconstructionism has grown quite a lot” in recent years.

“Its growth is not readily apparent. I think the influence has grown even though the number of prominent individuals associated with us is not what it was in the 1970s,” Rushdoony said. “So I think it is somewhat lacking in leadership right now, but the ideas of the movement are more prevalent now than they have ever been before.”

Regarding the ISIS comparison, Rushdoony told CP that “the comparison of Christian Reconstruction, or Theonomy, to Islamic fundamentalism is an old charge by our critics.”

Rushdoony added that he believes a major difference between ISIS and Reconstructionism is that the latter “is a very libertarian type of philosophy.”

“My father believed that the basic government is the government of the individual. So he very much believed in liberty and limiting the power of the state, which was the intent of our Constitution,” Rushdoony emphasized.

“He did not believe in imposing biblical law on an unbelieving society, he believed biblical law was the direction, the marching orders for the people of God.”

Rushdoony further asserted that people “mistook my father’s position as a political agenda” when his “primary audience” was “the individual Christian.”

“Modern man is really statist, so he thinks in terms of the ultimate organization of society as being at the government level,” he continued.

“My father was a very bottom-up thinker and he held that the kingdom of God is from the bottom-up. It’s the kingdom of God displayed in the individual that is going to greatly impact the future.”
