Each year, when September rolls around, the nation remembers with grief and emotion the tragedy that happened on September 11, 2001. To date, new stories continue to come to the surface about individuals’ experiences on that dreadful day. Ask just about anyone who was alive about the attack, and they will be able to tell you where they were and what they were doing. 

For Shelly Genovese Calhoun, she remembers the day like it was yesterday.

Calhoun was preparing to go into the city and live out her dream of being a model. She and her husband at the time, Steve, were living a dream life. 

The two were living outside of Manhattan and enjoying being parents to their 16-month-old baby girl. Calhoun remembers this season with joy and fondness. 

Like many Americans, Shelly and Steve went about their day as if it were just another ordinary day. In an interview with Christian Headlines, Calhoun specifically noted that “It was a normal morning.” 

That morning Steve headed off to his job. He worked as a trade investor for Cantor/Fitzgerald which was situated in the World Trade Center.

Remembering that day, Calhoun recalled that her mother – who was visiting from Dallas – came into the room where she was sitting and told her that two planes had crashed into the World Trade Center.

Five San Antonio citizens are suing the city over its controversial decision to block a Chick-fil-A at the local airport, claiming the move violates a new state law.

The suit by the citizens and the San Antonio Family Association was filed last week and accuses the city of discrimination against Chick-fil-A for its owners’ Christian beliefs. It also asks the court to block the city from allowing any other vendor except Chick-fil-A from opening in the space across Gate A6 at the airport. 

San Antonio’s city council voted in March to exclude Chick-fil-A from the airport, in part due to the company’s donations to the Salvation Army and Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Council members claimed the restaurant has a history of “anti-LGBT discrimination.”

Chick-fil-A is the third largest restaurant in the United States by sales. 

“According to our city council,” said city and plaintiff Michael Knuffke, “strongly held Christian principles mean you can’t conduct business in our city’s airport. Perhaps soon they will decide those who adopt traditional values should not be allowed to conduct business in our city at all. We need to ensure that doesn’t happen.”

In two tiny Texas towns, abortion is now illegal.

The cities of Omaha and Naples, both with populations hovering around 1,000 people, joined the ranks as the second and third cities in the Lone Star State to pass ordinances making it a criminal offense to abort babies at any stage in pregnancy.

“Because of the Omaha/Naples Ordinance, no abortion clinic will ever be able to move into these cities in the great State of Texas,” Mark Lee Dickson, Director of Right to Life of East Texas, said, according to Faithwire. “Everyone voted in favor of the ordinance with the exception of one.”

The ordinance is the strictest possible law, not granting any exceptions in the case of rape or incest. Emergency contraception, such as Plan B, are also illegal. The cities are calling themselves “sanctuary cities for the unborn.”

Waskom, Texas, became the first sanctuary city for the unborn earlier this year.

Dickson started his pro-life campaign after becoming frustrated with Austin elected officials not passing any “meaningful legislation that protects unborn life.”

A New York woman opened up about how September 11, 2001, changed her life and brought her closer to Christ.

“I was 31-years-old at the time and I just thought, ‘well, I’m in control of my life, I’m in control of my future,” Christina Stanton told Fox News. “I just need to work hard and God is going to give me what I want.”

Stanton told Fox News that she and her husband, Brian, were on the terrace of their downtown New York apartment when the planes hit the towers of the World Trade Center.

“We were on our terrace, and right over my right-hand shoulder, the second one came, went right in front in front of us, turned and went in… and essentially blew us back into our apartment and knocked us out,” she said.

She and her husband ran downstairs and out into the street where she recalled there was “complete and utter chaos.”

“Are we going to die?” Christina asked her husband. Brian responded by beginning to pray the Lord’s Prayer.

“When the attacks happened, I learned, ‘Wow! I actually have no control,’” Stanton said. “My worldview was totally changed, and I really had to start over from the beginning: ‘who am I?’ and ‘who am I in Christ’?

MIAMI, September 10, 2019 (Morning Star News) – Husband-and-wife pastors in Cuba are serving prison sentences for declining to send their children to a government-run school where their daughter was bullied for being a Christian, family members said.

Pastor Ramón Rigal was sentenced to two years in prison in April for homeschooling his two children, as well as for leading an unregistered church. His wife Ayda Expósito is serving an 18-month sentence in a women’s prison for refusing to educate their children in government-run schools, the only legal option in Cuba.

Another couple in their church has also been imprisoned for keeping their children out of the Cuban educational system, and six to nine other Christian families have likely met the same fate, sources said.

“It all started when I was in fourth grade; I suffered bullying at school because I was a Christian,” the Rigal-Expósito’s now 13-year-old daughter, Ruth Rigal, states in a video produced by a Cuban audiovisual magazine called ADN, the Spanish acronym for DNA. “I was kicked in the belly, so he [her father] decided to get me out of school. They began to chase us, to threaten us, saying that if we did not go to school, they would take us to the house of children without parental protection, and they were going to put my parents in jail.”

Jarrid Wilson, a well-known pastor who became a mental health advocate and co-founded an organization dedicated to suicide prevention, took his own life Monday night. 

Wilson was an associate pastor at Harvest Christian Fellowship in California, an author of multiple books and the co-founder of Anthem of Hope, a faith-centered organization dedicated to helping those battling depression, anxiety, self-harm, addiction and suicide. He also was a popular speaker.

Greg Laurie, pastor of Harvest Christian Fellowship, broke the news of Wilson’s suicide.

“It is with the deepest sadness and shock that I have to report that Jarrid Wilson went to be with the Lord last night,” Laurie wrote Tuesday evening. “At a time like this, there are just no words. The Bible says, ‘There is a time to mourn.’ This is certainly that time.”

Wilson, 30, is survived by his wife, Juli, his two young sons, Finch and Denham, and his mother, father, and siblings.

“Jarrid loved the Lord and had a servant’s heart,” Laurie wrote. “He was vibrant, positive, and was always serving and helping others. Jarrid also repeatedly dealt with depression and was very open about his ongoing struggles. He wanted to especially help those who were dealing with suicidal thoughts. Tragically, Jarrid took his own life.”
