Francis cited Catholic doctrine in responding to a question about the Chagos Islands during an in-flight press conference as he flew home from a visit to three African countries, including Mauritius.

Francis said when countries give international organisations such as the United Nations or international tribunals the right to adjudicate disputes, those decisions must be respected.

“It’s true that not always things that seem ‘just’ for all of humanity are ‘just’ for our pockets,” he said.

“But you must obey international institutions.”

Earlier this year, the UN general assembly voted overwhelmingly to demand that Britain, which held onto the Chagos Islands after granting Mauritius independence in 1968, end its “colonial administration” and return the Chagos Islands to Mauritius.

The vote was taken after the International Court of Justice issued an advisory opinion in February saying that Britain illegally carved up Mauritius when it kept Chagos.

Britain, which calls the archipelago a British Indian Ocean Territory, has refused to abide by both non-binding decisions.

It has argued that the archipelago never really belonged to Mauritius and that its continued presence there is strategically important.

Britain evicted about 2,000 people from the Chagos Islands in the 1960s and 1970s so the US military could build the Diego Garcia air base.

John Carr’s comment came as new figures show the number of child grooming cases recorded by police have risen by a third in 12 months in England and Wales.

The NSPCC said Instagram accounted for one in three cases in the year to April.

Carr, who’s the Secretary of the UK Children’s Charities’ Coalition on Internet Safety, said: “Any groups that are working with young people can do some great work.

“I’ve seen great examples of in youth clubs and church groups, scouts, and so on.

“The leaders of these groups need to be up to speed. They need to know what’s going on.

“Anybody who works with children who doesn’t understand how the internet works and our children use it can’t be doing their job properly or well enough, I’m afraid.

“There’s a great role for youth leaders in in every area to help.”

Figures published by the NSPCC also show more than 7,500 crimes have been recorded in the two years since the offence came into law.

One in five cases involved children aged 11 or under.

Facebook, which owns Instagram, said it has a team of 30,000 people ready to respond to issues around the clock.

Carr said the bulk of the responsibility lies on social media platforms to tighten up security and deal with issues quickly, but parents can’t rely on that.

Giroud also expressed his disdain for current issues in football.

“When I see what’s happening in football these days – racism, homophobic banners – it makes me want to take a stance and say ‘stop’,” he said.

“We organised a gala in London recently to benefit Christians who are persecuted around the world. It went very well.

“This is unusual in the world of football, but sometimes when I go to church people call on me to help.

“It is all done humbly and discreetly, and it is something that means a lot to me.”
