Gallup Poll Finds 60 Percent Want Abortion Illegal in All or Most Circumstances – Highest in 8 Years


Sixty percent of Americans say abortion should be illegal in all or most circumstances, according to a new Gallup survey that also found adults holding contradictory views on the subject.


It’s the highest percentage since 2011 of Americans opposing abortion most or all of the time. 


Gallup asked Americans whether they believe abortion should be illegal “in all circumstances,” in most circumstances, legal “under most circumstances” or legal “under any circumstances.”


Twenty-one percent say abortion should be illegal in all circumstances and 39 percent say it should be illegal under most circumstances, for a combined total of 60 percent. It’s the highest total since 2011 when it was 61 percent. 


Meanwhile, 49 percent of Americans consider themselves pro-life (the highest percentage since 2012) and 48 percent say they’re pro-choice. Not since 2013 has the percentage of pro-lifers outnumbered pro-choicers.


Still, the public remains conflicted about the legality of abortion, if not confused. That’s because the same sample that favors more restrictions on abortion also supports Roe v. Wade – the decision that prohibits most restrictions. 


A total of 60 percent of Americans oppose overturning Roe v. Wade while 33 percent say it should be overturned. Roe and its companion Doe v. Bolton decision legalized…

The Democratic debates and becoming a ‘happiness hunter’: The surprising source of true happiness

The Democratic Party’s presidential debates begin tonight. According to the Wall Street Journal, this is the largest Democratic presidential field in modern history. The candidates are hoping to differentiate themselves from each other and make an impact on the voting public.

Robby Mook, Hillary Clinton’s 2016 presidential campaign manager, explains: “The biggest question is who is driving the news. Who is getting attention.” Dan Pfeiffer, a former adviser to Barack Obama, added: “They need moments to create attention and virality to increase their poll numbers and, more importantly, get the online donor number up.” 

There is much in the news we could be discussing this morning, from the border crisis (which I plan to address later this week) to the ongoing tensions with Iran to the Middle East peace plan. But this week’s debates will make headlines both for what the candidates say that is memorable and what they say that is regrettable. 

Meanwhile, a story receiving less attention caught my eye as a parable for our contentious times. 

Finding the “secret to happiness” in Denmark 

If you’re unhappy with your job, perhaps you’d like to become a “happiness hunter.” Furniture chain Ikea is looking for someone willing to live for two weeks in Denmark and get paid in money and meatballs to help them “find all the keys to a real home of happiness.” 

You need to hurry—applications end next Monday. You need to have “at least 18 years of experience as a human being” and be a person who “always wanted to find the secret to happiness.” Ikea will cover your travel and give you free “köttbulla” (Swedish meatballs) at their restaurant. 

The “secret to happiness” seems to be more elusive today than ever.

Brexit has overshadowed UK poverty, says CAP

New figures released by the charity showed that almost a third of its clients were classed as destitute with some regularly unable to afford basic supplies such as milk and bread.

The study entitled ‘Left Destitute by Debt’ found that on top of lacking daily essentials, more than a quarter of those experiencing destitution lacked at least one essential household item, such as a bed, cooker or washing machine.

 

CAP have challenged the UK government to acknowledge the severity of the problem and take action to ensure everyone in the country has a decent standard of living.

CAP CEO Matt Barlow said: “We feel the Government have a poverty blind spot currently with other issues like Brexit seemingly taking precedence.

“More has to be done to protect the most vulnerable in this country and we need to look again at UK poverty and prioritise solutions to ensure no one is left destitute.”

According to the report, 37 per cent of UK households living in poverty go without lighting at least once a week, whilst three in five lacked warm and cold weather clothing.

Dawn Stowbart, CAP’s Director of external affairs told Premier: “There’s 14.2 million people in the UK in destitution, who are really struggling to put food on the table for their families, to be able to heat their homes, to have a bed.

Ohio to Fund Pro-Life Pregnancy Centers Instead of Planned Parenthood


A Midwest state that previously stripped funding from Planned Parenthood out of its annual budget is now set to increase funding for pro-life crisis pregnancy centers.


Ohio’s state Senate passed a bill last week that includes $5 million for crisis pregnancy centers – a $4 million increase from previous budgets, according to Cleveland.com.


Earlier this year, a federal appeals court upheld an Ohio law that stripped most funding from Planned Parenthood. The organization received about $1.5 million in annual state funds.


“This is the first budget opportunity we’ve had since then to invest additional funds into crisis pregnancy centers,” said Ohio Senate President Larry Obhof, a Republican, during an interview on Tony Perkins’ Washington Watch radio program.   


Republicans control both chambers. Ohio’s governor, Mike DeWine, is a Republican. 


Crisis pregnancy centers, Obhof said, provide women ultrasounds, pregnancy tests, prenatal care, parenting classes, counseling, diapers and clothes, and other financial aid. 


Ohio has around 200 crisis pregnancy centers that serve low-income women “who need help,” Obhof said. The centers don’t perform abortions. 


“They’re providing pretty valuable services to women in need, and that’s true for rural communities, suburban and urban alike,” he said.
