Editor’s Note: This article (publication date: August 7, 2020) is part of a series leading up to the 2020 presidential election highlighting the professed faith of several of the candidates running for President, including Donald Trump, Joe Biden, and Kanye West. Christian Headlines offers these faith summaries as a way of informing voters about the religious beliefs of the candidates.
Rap singer and presidential candidate Kanye West has faced both criticism and praise as he continues his run for the presidential seat.
In many states, West has filed petitions and paid fees to be placed on the ballot as an independent candidate in November. West is running under the BDY, The Birthday Party.
Most notably, West’s latest campaign event and his 2019 album, Jesus Is King, have shown West’s complex relationship with religion.
Here are five things to know about West’s faith.

It appears that having a sweet tooth may be helpful after all. In fact, eating chocolate in moderation a few times a week could benefit you. According to a study published recently in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology, consuming chocolate between one to three times per week reduced risk of coronary artery disease by 8 percent.
To draw this conclusion, researchers across the U.S. looked at six studies over five decades from 1966 to January 2020. Comprising 336,289 individuals, the study subjects were from three continents. This included 266,264 people from the United States, 68,809 from Sweden and 1,216 from Australia.
Individuals were followed for nearly nine years in the chosen studies to be able to make comparisons between people who did not eat chocolate and the progression of the diseases they suffered from. As many as 21,777 diseases were reported by the participants during the follow-up period. Of which, 14,043 cases were of coronary artery disease, 4,667 heart attacks, 2,735 strokes and 332 heart failures. This gave the study’s authors the opportunity to investigate the impact of chocolate on disease risk, particularly if it affected the heart’s functioning.
“Our study suggests that chocolate helps keep the heart’s blood vessels healthy. In the past, clinical studies have shown that chocolate is beneficial for both blood pressure and the lining of blood vessels. I wanted to see if it affects the blood vessels supplying the heart (the coronary arteries) or not. And if it does, is it beneficial or harmful?,” study author Dr. Chayakrit Krittanawong of Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, Texas said in the news release.
This systematic analysis of previous studies took the quantity of chocolate into account. Each serving was limited to 30 grams of chocolate. Researchers could not determine the optimal amount required to promote good health as chocolate products are made with milk, sugar and fat in varying amounts. For this reason, Dr. Krittanawong advises against overindulging: “Moderate amounts of chocolate seem to protect the coronary arteries but it’s likely that large quantities do not.The calories, sugar, milk, and fat in commercially available products need to be considered, particularly in diabetics and obese people.”
Dark chocolate is among the top sources of antioxidants that could help improve health and reduce risk of diseases. Pixabay
When it came to understanding protective effects of chocolate on diabetes alone, the researchers found that eating two servings of chocolate helped prevent diabetes. However, when the consumption was increased to about six servings per week, no positive effect was noted on diabetes control. With congenital heart defect (CHD) and strokes, disease risk was brought down by less than three servings a week. “In conclusion, chocolate intake is associated with decreased risks of CHD, stroke, and diabetes. Consuming chocolate in moderation [≤6 servings/week] may be optimal for preventing these disorders,” the authors wrote.
While it may be confusing to people that doctors generally do not recommend food with sugar content, dark chocolate in moderation is recommended for people with diabetes and heart disease. Cocoa, the main ingredient in chocolate, contains flavonols, an antioxidant that can reduce risk of heart disease and diabetes, according to the Mayo Clinic.“Chocolate contains heart healthy nutrients such as flavonoids, methylxanthines, polyphenols and stearic acid which may reduce inflammation and increase good cholesterol [high-density lipoprotein or HDL cholesterol],’’ Dr. Krittanawong explained.
Nevertheless, the new study did not examine the different types of chocolates available, hence the paper did not mention dark chocolate specifically. The study has many such limits. Researchers could not determine the physiological process of chocolate consumption and reduced risk of heart disease either. Therefore, long-term, double-blind, randomized controlled trials are required to understand this further, they said. One such study due to be completed by 2021 is COSMOS (for COcoa Supplement and Multivitamin Outcome Study) led by Harvard and Brigham and Women’s Hospital.
This four-year long study with 18,000 people is examining whether cocoa extract supplement containing 600 mg/d flavanols and a multivitamin could protect cardiovascular health and cancer risk. Furthermore, Harvard researchers maintained that their intention is not to make a clinical recommendation, but to provide more information on the benefits of cocoa flavanols.
The woman who went viral last month for painting over a Black Lives Matter mural in New York City is addressing her actions as well as her thoughts on the Black Lives Matter organization.
In an interview with CBN News, activist and evangelist Bevelyn Beatty explained what was going through her mind before defacing the mural that was painted in front of Trump Tower.
“I have to paint this mural. I have to cover this mural,” she told CBN News analyst David Brody. “I was so tired of this Black Lives Matter narrative…we’re going to hit it. We’re going to fight and we’re going to stand and God is with me. And that was it.”
Prior to coming to Christ, Beatty went through a rough upbringing, such as growing up on welfare, watching loved ones die and living a life of trouble. Seven years ago, Beatty was arrested on money laundering charges. It was during her time in jail that she would come to Christ after someone shared the Gospel with her.
“When I got out of jail, honey, you couldn’t get me to steal a pack of bubble gum,” she said. “You couldn’t get me to do nothing.”
Following her conversion, Beatty worked for “At the Well Ministries” as an anti-abortion Christian activist. Beatty also spoke against the Black Lives Matter organization as she believes that the group is doing more harm than good to Black people.
She noted how the group seeks to disrupt the “western…

(RNS) — For the past two Sundays, Grace Community Church pastor John MacArthur has defied California’s COVID-19 regulations by opening the doors of his church, allowing un-masked congregants to sing in close proximity to each other.
Lawyers for the church say that Grace Community Church and MacArthur could face $1,000 a day in fines for doing so.
Church leaders say they will follow the Bible instead of health regulations.
“We will obey God rather than men. We’re going to be faithful to our Lord,” MacArthur told his congregants in a July 31 video. “We’re going to leave the results to him.”
MacArthur and the church’s elders say Grace Community Church’s actions are founded on biblical principles. According to a statement, church leaders believe that the government is charged with protecting civic order and well-being. But the government can’t dictate “the doctrine, practice, or polity of the church.”
Meeting together in person and singing together are commanded in the Bible, say church leaders. To stop meeting or singing would be to disobey God.
“As His people, we are subject to His will and commands as revealed in Scripture,” the statement reads. “Therefore we cannot and will not acquiesce to a government-imposed moratorium on our weekly congregational worship or other regular corporate gatherings. Compliance would be disobedience to our Lord’s clear commands.”
That approach is…

International evangelist Luis Palau has encouraged Christian parents to instill biblical principles in their children from the earlier years, citing the Word of God as the “key” to bringing wayward kids back to Christ.
In a message delivered at the two-day virtual Promise Keepers 2020 Men’s Conference, Luis and Andrew Palau, leaders of the Luis Palau Association, shared how Scripture memorization and a faithful witness contributed to Andrew’s conversion as a young adult.
Before Andrew was born, Luis Palau’s mother told him his unborn son would be the “next evangelist.”
“I took it seriously as from the Lord because she was a godly woman,” Luis, known as the Billy Graham of Latin America, said. “She was a prayerful woman.”
But while Andrew was a “good son,” “he didn’t know Jesus Christ and we knew that,” Luis said.
“My wife used to say, ‘If he’s got feathers like a bird, if he flies like a bird, if he chirps like a bird, he’s a bird,…

Lebanese bride Israa Seblani stood in a long white gown and veil, smiling and posing for her wedding video, when the scene was shattered by a horrific roar and a shockwave nearly threw her from her feet.
The footage captured the moment on Tuesday when a massive explosion rocked Beirut, killing at least 135 people and injuring more than 5,000.
Seblani, a doctor working in the US, helped check on the injured before fleeing the area to safety. She said later, “What happened during the explosion here—there is no word to explain . . . I was shocked, I was wondering what happened, am I going to die? How am I going to die?”
Lebanon’s president, Michel Aoun, said that 2,750 tons of ammonium nitrate caused the massive fireball that sent a shockwave across the city. “There are no words to describe the catastrophe that hit Beirut,” he stated.
The Port of Beirut was destroyed. Shop and apartment windows were blown out two miles from where the explosion occurred. Losses are estimated to be between $10 billion and $15 billion.
Protests erupted last night in central Beirut. More than three hundred thousand people—more than 12 percent of the city’s population—are now homeless. Hospitals are overwhelmed with the injured. Images of a shattered city convey just some of the horror.
Why was the ammonium nitrate there? A vessel called the MV Rhosus entered the port at Beirut in 2013 due a lack of seaworthiness and was forbidden from sailing. The ship’s owner abandoned the vessel, and the ammonium nitrate remained in a storage facility in Beirut’s port. Authorities were supposed to dispose of it safely but failed to do so.
Many in Lebanon blame years of mismanagement and corruption by the country’s political…

I spent a decade of my life in camp and youth ministry. Camp is an intense and fast-paced environment that can often be a catalyst to personal and professional growth. I can look back on every summer and see something extraordinary that God worked out in my life.
At the end of one of my last summers, one particular staffer made a comment on his end of summer evaluation that has greatly impacted me professionally and personally. He wrote, “When it comes to staff relationships I realize that I am the least common denominator.” As a 20-year-old, he understood the importance of being self-aware.
Leaders reading this fall into one of two categories: (1) the senior leader, (2) everybody else. Regardless of category it is crucial for you to be self-aware. Here are some questions to ask yourself:
What are your strengths? For me I know that I am a strategy and systems guy. I enjoy seeing the desired future and setting up a path to get there. I love problem solving when things go wrong. I thrive on execution of tasks and accomplishing goals.
What are your weaknesses? I know I can get caught in the details and systems of a task. You can guarantee I will execute the plan, but I often miss the people around me. I have to set reminders and email myself to make sure I check in on those around me. I make a habit in every call or conversation to see how someone is doing before we get to the task at hand.
What are your blindspots? These are the things you don’t know. I have found that this takes…
