Dementia fears for Christian mum Asia Bibi held in Pakistan

Asia Bibi is displaying symptoms of dementia at an “early” stage, according to a campaign group trying to free her – the British Pakistan Christian Association (BPCA).

The Association cited a recent visit to Bibi by a Pakistani journalist who suggested her memory, mental sharpness and judgement were in decline.

Bibi was found guilty under Pakistan’s strict blasphemy laws in November 2010 after being accused of insulting the Islamic prophet Mohammad and drinking from the same water source as Muslims in June 2009.

For most of the past nine years, Bibi has been held in solitary confinement inside a Pakistan prison cell – sentenced to death, despite support from high-profile figures including the Pope.

Concerned solitary confinement has had a serious toll on Bibi’s welfare, Wilson Chowdhry from the BPCA said: “No divine being needs human help which makes blasphemy laws so petty and ridiculous.

“Yet, the intolerant nature of Muslims in Pakistan has meant an innocent mother-of-five has lost a relationship with her family and through the onset of dementia, she may never be able to bond effectively with them again.

“If delays in her Supreme Court appeal take any longer, then the freedom we have all hoped to gain for her will be extremely shallow and will quickly become a new period of isolation.”

Pompeo: US ‘Sparing No Effort’ for Return of Pastor Detained in Turkey

Pompeo: US ‘Sparing No Effort’ for Return of Pastor Detained in Turkey

WASHINGTON (RNS) — Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has reiterated Trump administration promises to continue to work for the release of American pastor Andrew Brunson, who has been held in Turkey for almost two years.

“We are sparing no effort to return Pastor Brunson home to the United States,” Pompeo said Friday (Sept. 21) at the annual Values Voter Summit attended mostly by Christian conservatives from across the country. “The work is important. He has been wrongly held and his proper place is to be able to return here to once again practice his faith in our great nation.”

In August, the Trump administration sanctioned two high-level officials in Turkey for what it says is their role in the case of Brunson, who faces terrorism-related charges.

Pompeo’s speech, which was met by applause, was part of a focus on international religious liberty on the first day of the three-day summit organized by Family Research Council Action.

Brunson’s daughter, Jacqueline Furnari, spoke shortly after Pompeo’s remarks during a panel discussion on the issue. She said her family awaits her imprisoned father’s next court date on Oct. 12. He has been charged with “Christianization,” which he denies.

She recounted how her father, who has lived in Turkey since 1993 and pastored a small Protestant church there, was called to a police station where he thought he…

Turkey may free detained pastor Andrew Brunson in days

Mike Pompeo also said he expects talks to take place between American and Turkish officials this week about the future of Andrew Brunson.

Speaking with reporters in New York on Monday, Mr Pompeo said: “Yes, he could be released this month.

“He should have been released last month.

“And he should be released today, in fact.

“We have talked to the Turks.

“They know the expectations.”

Mr Brunson (pictured below with his wife, Norine) had been leading a small church in the coastal city of Izmir for more than 20 years before he was arrested in October 2016 and later charged with espionage and terrorism offences. He faces up to 35 years in prison. Mr Brunson denies any wrongdoing.

The 50-year-old from Black Mountain in North Carolina is accused of links to a movement spearheaded by Fethullah Gülen, a cleric Turkey considers responsible for an attempted coup in July 2016.

Thousands of people including judges, soldiers and teachers were suspended in a subsequent crackdown by authorities.

The detention of Mr Brunson has drawn condemnation from President Donald Trump and prompted him to double import tariffs on Turkish steel and aluminium.

Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the Turkish President, is also visiting the US this week for a meeting at the United Nations.

Turkish presidential spokesman Ibraham Kalim was quoted as saying a decision on…

How Ashley Kavanaugh defended her husband

“I know Brett. I’ve known him for 17 years. He’s decent, he’s kind, he’s good. I know his heart. This is not consistent with Brett.” This is how Ashley Kavanaugh described her husband last night as the two were interviewed by Fox News.

When asked how their daughters are dealing with accusations against their father, she said, “They know Brett and they know the truth.”

Why is character under attack today?

This is such a complicated issue. On one hand, the last thing I want to do is defend any kind of sexual abuse. No person is above the law, not even (or especially) those who interpret it on our nation’s highest levels of jurisprudence.

On the other hand, in a democracy with a free press, anyone can make an accusation against anyone. Gone is the day when a person is innocent until proven guilty. Today it seems that the accused is guilty until proven innocent.

This is bad news, for the accused and for the accuser.

In situations like these, it is difficult for the accused to prove their innocence without demonstrating the guilt of those accusing them. To debunk the charges they face often requires that they discredit their accusers. Consequently, victims of sexual abuse face unfair scrutiny and counter-allegations that make it harder for them to come forward.

But it is also unfair for victims of false accusations to be forced to prove their innocence. They bear the burden of guilt though they have done nothing wrong.

Add the fact that, in our 24/7 news cycle, with thousands of media outlets starved for stories, it’s easier than ever to generate a headline. In our bitterly polarized, highly politicized day, it’s hard to trust the motives of those who accuse or defend political figures.

As a result, personal character has never been more important–or more attacked–than today. How is this fact relevant to followers of Jesus?

Why is popularity so perilous?

You and I are ambassadors for the King of the universe (2 Corinthians…

British priest facing deportation ‘after Trump immigration order’

Reverend David Boase, 69, is priest at two Episcopal churches in Alton, Illinois.

According to the Washington Post, when he took his US driving test in 2005, a government official asked him if he wanted to register to vote and duly processed his UK documents without raising the issue of citizenship.

Rev Boase admits taking part in a ballot on boosting resources for the local fire department but says he did not know he was doing anything wrong or illegal.

He told the Washington Post: “It’s a shame when a person tells the truth and admits fault, intends to explain in all honesty, with full disclosure, and still everything falls apart.”

Rev Boase was born in Cumbria and studied at the universities of Durham and Oxford.

He says he feels at home in Illinois and wants to stay there and become a US citizen.

Rev Boase’s lawyer believes his case is only happening because of a change to the US Citizenship and Immigration Service brought in by President Trump in an executive order in January 2017.

His local parish have started a GoFundMe campaign to help with his legal fees.

Rev Boase though expects to be deported by an immigration judge on Friday and is currently selling his home and its contents.

German report reveals 3,600 abuse cases within the Catholic Church

The abuse, which occurred over a period of 68 years, is one of the biggest Catholic Church scandals in Europe.

The report was commissioned by the German Bishops’ Conference and conducted by researchers from three German universities, who examined cases from 1946 until 2014.

“We are experiencing a very dark hour in our church’s history, which will hopefully result in a cleansing and renewal,” Bishop Franz-Josef Overbeck, from Essen, wrote in a letter to his diocese.

“The dangers are far from being exorcised. We must fear that there is and could still be sexual abuse among us.”

The Washington Post reported that an advance copy of the 356-page report was shared with it by German newspaper Die Zeit.

The news outlet confirmed details of the experience of individual victims are not included and the report doesn’t provide the names of alleged abusers or those who allegedly helped protect them.

While the report includes interviews with 214 victims, the researchers found that only 30 per cent had reported the abuse to someone else, and that the majority of those who did were punished for doing so.

Indonesian teen survives 49 days adrift without paddle, but with Bible

Aldi Novel Adilang said he ran out of food within a week and survived on fish and seawater he strained through his clothing.

The 18-year-old added that he turned on a lamp every time he sighted a ship and cannot remember how many passed by “unaware of my ordeal”.

Interviewed by local news portal TribunManado, Aldi said he thought he “was going to die out there”. He said at one point he became suicidal and considered jumping into the ocean, but remembered his parents’ advice to pray in times of distress. He had a bible on board so he did.

He was rescued by a Panamanian-flagged vessel off Guam on August 31, about 1,200 miles from his original location, and returned to Indonesia with officials earlier this month, according to the Indonesian consulate in Osaka, Japan.

The teenager had been employed since the age of 16 in one of the world’s loneliest jobs: lamp lighter on a rompong – a wooden fishing raft with a hut on top – moored about 78 miles off the coast of North Sulawesi.

The coastline is not visible from the fishing rafts and the numerous rompong are miles apart from one another, said Mr Adilang’s mother, Met Kahiking.

Supplies are dropped off to the light keepers about once a week.

“I was on the raft for one month and 18 days. My food ran out after the first week,” said Mr Adilang.

When it did not rain for…

Women have ‘never had it so good’

Writing in the Radio Times, the Catholic and former Tory MP questioned why the BBC show Strictly Come Dancing has two female presenters.

Widdecombe, who was herself once a contestant on the dance show, said that women have “never had it so good” and that it is now a “positive advantage to be a woman in the media”.

She added: “Why, BBC? Why, when Strictly Come Dancing is predicated on teams of men and women, do we have two women presenters?

“It’s all part of the pattern of quotas and all-women shortlists that pervades not just the Corporation (unofficially, of course, and definitely in practise) but also politics both with a big P and small one.”

The 70-year-old former Conservative politician criticised what she described as “the age of the whine and the whinge”.

“Until the 1970s, it was lawful for employers to advertise a job with two rates of pay, one for men and one for women,” she said.

Known for not mincing her words, Widdecombe lived up to her reputation in her critique of the #MeToo movement.

“So keen are women to embrace victimhood that members of the #MeToo movement wail about flirtatious conduct decades ago and even a Cabinet minister whimpers about an off-colour joke of several years earlier”, she claimed.

“It’s enough to make one wonder if we should have stayed at home darning socks.

‘The biggest mystery of all, however, is why the men so cringingly put up…

Podcast Episode #470

SUBSCRIBE: iTunes • RSS • Stitcher • TuneIn Radio • Google Play • iHeart Radio

With my upcoming retirement from LifeWay, we take time to look back on my 13 years as president. We discuss the challenges, the wins, the fun times, and the walk on the beach that changed the course of LifeWay forever.

Some highlights from today’s episode include:

  • Even though I became president of LifeWay in 2005, because of the Great Recession, it didn’t feel like I got started until 2010.
  • The turnaround of ongoing curriculum at LifeWay was the biggest business win of my tenure. From a ministry standpoint, the biggest win was the release of the Christian Standard Bible.
  • I wouldn’t trade the employees of LifeWay for any other group of employees. They are the best.
  • If you get the best people around you, change will take place.

Attaining Intimacy in Marriage (Part 3) By Pastor Faith Oyedepo

Attaining Intimacy in Marriage (Part 3) by Pastor Faith Oyedepo

Topic: Attaining Intimacy in Marriage (Part 3)

Dear Reader,

You are welcome into God’s presence in Jesus’ name! Last week, I showed you the characteristics of intimacy. This week, I want to share with you: Hindrances to developing Intimacy.

It is important to know that everything converse to enhancing and preserving intimacy is an obstacle; including the following:

Pride

This makes you feel you are better than your husband, therefore, you can’t condescend and bring yourself low to do all that is required to foster intimacy. If you are proud your husband will likely want to prove to you that he is the one in charge. The Word of God says:Only by pride cometh contention: but with the well advised is wisdom (Proverbs 13:10).

Anger

This can make your husband to fear you and seek either to defend himself or withdraw into an impenetrable shell. If this happens, there can be no intimacy. The Word of God says: He that is slow to anger is better than the mighty… (Proverbs 16:32).

Bitterness

When you are not living at peace with someone, bitterness begins to build up in your heart towards that person. Remember, God is not where bitterness is. Why? God is love. Light cannot dwell with darkness. He cannot manifest His power where there is hatred. It doesn’t matter whether the person is a Christian or not, as long as you have bitterness in your heart against anyone, you carry a burden and your prayers are hindered. At times, the person you are angry with is not even aware of it, but you make it impossible for yourself to approach the throne of grace. Bitterness destroys! It is a serious sickness! Give it no room in your life. It is true that the person has offended you. He is wrong and you are right. Forgive him in your heart and tell him so. By so doing, you free yourself from the effects and consequences of bitterness, so they won’t trouble you. Don’t repay evil for evil. Repay bitterness and hatred with the love of God.

Below is a testimony:

“I joined the Winners’ Chapel in 1997 and became born again that year. When I came for a service that year, the preaching of the Servant of God, Bishop David Oyedepo, really touched my heart. So, when the altar call was made, I came out and surrendered my life to Christ.

Since I became a child of God, I can now forgive people easily. The former spirit of unforgiveness has now been removed and replaced by the spirit of forgiveness.

In fact, people now see the changes in me. I give glory to God for everything happening in my life.”

– Okafor, H.

In case you are reading this article and you are having this kind of spirit, I decree your freedom from it today in Jesus’ Name. Amen.

Careless Speech

This is a major obstacle to intimacy. If your husband observes this about you, he would prefer to stay on his own and not open up to you. Also, careless speech would stir up anger in him. If you are the source of your husband’s anger, intimacy will be far-fetched (Proverbs 15:1).

Contention

This means having a tendency towards nagging and quarrels. Also, it is seeking for quarrels even when there is none in sight. A contentious woman is considered and avoided like a plague by her husband and even other people, (Proverbs 19:13, 9:19).

BENEFITS OF INTIMACY

  • It brings about unity, which promotes God’s presence and blessings within the marriage, (Psalm 133).
  • It brings about free flow of communication (Proverbs 27: 1)9.
  • It makes marriage last a lifetime (Proverbs 31: 11, 28 – 31).
  • It makes marriage more enjoyable (Proverbs 31: 25; Isaiah 62: 5).
  • It brings about greater spiritual strength than ever before (Ecclesiastes 4: 9 –12).
  • It negates shame, reproach and confusion because there is openness, (Genesis 2: 25).

To avoid these hindrances to intimacy in marriage, you need God’s grace that averts disgrace upon one’s life. If you are already born again, rejoice because your case is settled. If you are not yet born again and you desire to do so right now, please pray this prayer with faith in your heart: Dear Lord Jesus Christ, I come to You today. I am a sinner. Forgive me my sins and cleanse me with Your Blood. I accept You as my Lord and personal Saviour. Make me a child of God today. Thank You for delivering me from sin and satan to serve the living God and thank You for accepting me into Your Kingdom.

Congratulations! If you prayed this simple prayer of faith with me, you are now born again and a child of God. He loves you and will never leave you. Read your Bible daily, obey God’s Word and seek Christian fellowship (John 14:21).

With this, you are guaranteed all-round rest and peace in Jesus’ Name! Call or write to share your testimonies with me through [email protected], 07026385437 OR 08141320204.
