Vincent Nichols acknowledges safeguarding criticism as he celebrates priests

Cardinal Vincent Nichols celebrated a National Mass of thanksgiving and renewal for priests at Westminster Cathedral on Friday lunchtime, welcoming everyone and then saying:

“In recent days, in the IICSA Report and in the media, there has been sharp criticism of our work of Safeguarding in the Catholic Church, and of aspects of my ministry in Birmingham. I acknowledge this, of course.

“Yet this not the time nor place for those matters. Rather today is about you, my brother priests, about your faithfulness, your steadfast generosity, your ministry of healing, your endurance, not least under the burden of the grievous damage done to innocent victims by just a very few of our brother priests. I thank you for your faithfulness, your generosity, your perseverance. I thank you, as do each of us bishops, and the people of your parishes. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you!”

He then moved on and did not refer to the topic again in his homily.

In June, Cardinal Vincent Nicholls was criticised in the report from the Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse for putting the reputation of the Church before welfare of children.

He was the Archbishop of Birmingham between 2000 and 2009, the Archdiocese which was looked into thouroughly.

Once example of Cardinal Nichols’ behaviour was that the report found he was “misplaced and missed the point” when he…

Support for Bathroom Policy That Reflects Gender of Birth Is Widespread, New Gallup Poll Reveals

Support for Bathroom Policy That Reflects Gender of Birth Is Widespread, New Gallup Poll Reveals

A new survey taken by research group Gallup has indicated broad support for bathroom policies which ensure transgender individuals use the restroom associated with their birth gender.

Trans bathroom policies have split opinion ever since Walmart hit the headlines in 2016 for allowing transgender individuals to use the bathroom that matches with their percieved gender identity. In response, thousands expressed concerns about public safety, and a massive boycott of the retailing giant was launched.

Three years on, it appears that people are still extremely worried about the prospect of biological men entering the women’s restroom, and vice versa.

According to Gallup’s new poll, over half of the 1,017 American adults surveyed (51%) were in agreement that transgender people should “use the restroom that corresponds with their birth gender.”

Interestingly, in the broader context of this wide ranging study into LGBT issues, the public opinion on bathroom policies was standalone. In general, those surveyed supported pro-LGBT initiatives. However, when it came to trans people being allowed in any bathroom they wish, the opinions shifted drastically.

Upon further breakdown of the data, it was clear that men (61%) were more likely than women (42%) to say that bathroom admission should be in line with birth gender.

Politically, there was…

Christian ministers not getting visas raised in House of Commons

The SNP MP for Paisley & Renfrewshire North, Gavin Newlands, has raised in parliament the issue in parliament.

In a debate on Thursday about immigration Mr Newlands said: “Recently, the UK Government also imposed changes for tier 5 entry visas, including, notably, the removal of ministers of religion from the eligibility criteria.

“That decision has generated much concern from faith leaders throughout my constituency and in religious communities across the United Kingdom. If we take the example of Catholic communities, that change will have a significant impact on priests coming into the UK because most Catholic dioceses regularly use the tier 5 religious worker visa route for them to come here on supply placements while parish priests are away for short periods.”

Tier 5 visas are for temporary work, issued for no longer than 12 months, and previously open to ‘ministers of religion’.

Church ministers would use this if covering for another minister’s sabatical, for example.

Mr Newlands told the House: “The supply placements are imperative as they enable people to continue attending mass and receiving sacraments, while keeping parish activities running smoothly – activities that are of benefit to the entire community, not just to Catholics.

“Under the new Home Office guidance, priests on supply placements will now be required to use the tier 2 minister of…

“Virtually Wiped Out”: 95 Christians Killed in Mali Village

“Virtually Wiped Out”: 95 Christians Killed in Mali Village

Nearly 100 Christians were killed by Muslim terrorists this month in the West African country of Mali.

According to the BBC, Fulani Muslims attacked a village composed of mainly Christians in Sobame Da, burning houses and killing at least 95 men, women, and children. As of earlier this month, the search for bodies was still ongoing with 19 people from the village still missing.

“About 50 heavily armed men arrived on motorbikes and pickups,” Amadou Togo, a survivor of the attack, told the AFP agency. “They first surrounded the village and then attacked — anyone who tried to escape was killed. No one was spared — women, children, elderly people.”

The BBC estimates that the attack on the village killed about a third of its inhabitants.

The Christian persecution watchdog group Open Doors believes that every one of those people killed were Christians. Another source at the village said, “A Dogon village has been virtually wiped out.”

The attack came after years of tension between the Dogon people who live in central Mali, and the Fulani, who are semi-nomadic herders and largely militant Muslim. In three years, the number of attacks has grown by four times, causing the International Crisis Group to urge the government to initiate discussions for peace.

Open Doors reports that less than 1 percent of Christians live in West Africa, and those Christians are…

Church help Afghan convert avoid deportation

Ahmadi, 19, came to the UK after seeing his brother murdered by the Taliban. He stowed away in the boot of a car and came to the country as a refugee.

The young man became a Christian in the UK and attended Christ Lutheran Church in Orpington, south-east London, where Reverend Jon Ehlers is the pastor.

Rev. Jon told Premier: “Jawid is a young Afghan refugee who’s been worshiping with us since the end of 2016…he’s been a real wonderful example and influence upon our congregation about what living the faith really is all about and how important it is in our daily lives, even when faced with real threats and dangers.

“He was searching for Christianity after his arrival and I’m not sure I would say that he became a Christian after coming to our church, but perhaps he did, but we, I hope, have certainly nurtured in his growth in his faith. He was baptised in our church and has attended Bible studies and we’ve done a lot of one to one stuff. We certainly, I hope, have been instrumental in nurturing that faith.”

“I wish everybody attended church as much as Jawid does.”

In Jawid’s original hearing the judge said there wasn’t enough evidence to say he was a Christian.

“As time went on,” Rev. Jon said, “it became very obvious to me and to our congregation that he was very serious about his faith and he certainly believed that Jesus died and rose again for the…

Calls to Normalize Pedophilia on the Rise: New Report Recommends Workshops Instead of Prosecution

Calls to Normalize Pedophilia on the Rise: New Report Recommends Workshops Instead of Prosecution

Jackie Hill Perry, who shares her journey from lesbian to Christian poet, writer, and hip-hop artist in her book “Gay Girl Good God,” recently retweeted a TED Talk speaker who normalizes pedophilia.

Perry’s thread started Tuesday when she posted a tweet by Ian Miles Cheong, who wrote, “This is apparently mainstream now. Hosted by TED Talks.” He then pulled out a quote from a presenter. “Pedophilia is an unchangeable sexual orientation.”

The tweet included a link to a May 2018 presentation by Mirjam Heine, a medical student at University of Würzburg in Germany.

Perry’s retweet simply said:

“‘We should accept that pedophilia is a sexual preference that people do not choose.’  I knew this was coming…”

Perry’s tweet comes the same month as the release of a startling new report from the United Kingdom recommending pedophiles should be diverted to…
