Church could be forced by council to demolish new £920,000 hall

Bowthorpe Road Chinese Methodist Church were served an enforcement notice after its new extension was built 4.5m closer to homes than it should have been.

Catherine Hutton, superintendent minister for the Norwich Methodist Circuit, told Eastern Daily press: “We noticed there is a distinct lack of community buildings in the area, and the hall was erected to fill that gap while also providing a place of worship.

“It will be heartbreaking if we have to take it down. It will be a real loss to the community and the church as we have not yet been able to realise its potential.”

The church, which has a regular congregation of 160 people, has appealed the notice but could be required to demolish the building if it is unsuccessful.

The council gave the church planning permission in 2016 to demolish the former church hall and build a new one on the site.

However, an enforcement investigation began after neighbours noticed the distance between the hall and its boundary was not correct.

The church went on to make a new application seeking permission for where the hall had been built but this was turned down by the council’s planning committee.

The city council has stated that the building is “considered dangerous”.

Edmond Tsui, the church’s pastor said the congregation raised £300,000 for the hall, while the rest was funded through…

Queen meets Christians and other faith groups at Buckingham Palace

At a reception held at Buckingham Palace, the monarch greeted 160 representatives of different beliefs and faiths from across the UK.

A smaller group of 12 volunteers and community workers had the chance to discuss with her their efforts to bring about positive change in their neighbourhoods.

They said the Queen took time to quiz them on their work in supporting people from a variety of backgrounds and encouraged them to work together in future now they had met each other.

Rachael Cox, from Celebrating Sanctuary Birmingham, who develop community engagement projects with refugee communities and asylum seekers, said the Queen seemed “empathetic” during the discussion.

“She was very interested in all of our work with refugees and asylum seekers in particular,” she said.

“She seemed very empathetic to the situation they’re in and the difficulties that they face.”

Pastor Dai Hankey, from Cardiff, called the Queen “genuinely buzzing” to hear the community leaders networking amongst themselves.

Following his conversation with the monarch, he said: “She was very aware. You get the impression that people who live in palaces aren’t aware of the outside world, but she really does know what’s going on in the world and…

2 Killed, 13 Injured in Fatal Church Charter Bus Crash

2 Killed, 13 Injured in Fatal Church Charter Bus Crash

Two people were killed and 13 others injured Sunday after a charter bus carrying the group to a national youth conference crashed in Colorado.

According to The Christian Post, the group of 15, five adults and 10 children, was headed to the Steubenville Youth Conference.

Colorado State Patrol spokesman Sgt. Blake White said the bus hit an embankment under a bridge on Interstate on 25 and veered off the highway.

The driver, who has not been identified, may have had a medical issue that could have contributed to the accident, police said. He was ejected from the bus and killed.

The second person killed in the accident has been identified as Jason Paul Marshall.

Police said the 13 other passengers are in hospitals with minor to critical injuries.

“It is with heavy hearts that we inform you that a group from New Mexico, which attended this weekend’s Steubenville of the Rockies Conference, were involved in a tragic and fatal bus accident. We ask you to please pray for everyone involved and their families,” the Steubenville of the Rockies Youth Conference announced in a post on Facebook late Sunday.

The Steubenville of the Rockies Youth Conference is hosted by the Archdiocese of Denver and is an outreach of Franciscan University of Steubenville. The university puts on some 25 conferences for teenagers every summer.

“Please pray tonight for a Catholic group from New…

Pregnant mentally ill woman at centre of overturned abortion case ‘has already named baby’

The woman’s Catholic mother earlier this week won a legal battle after doctors said the pregnancy should be terminated.

A judge on Friday gave specialists permission to terminate the pregnancy.

But Court of Appeal judges on Monday overturned that decision after the woman’s mother mounted a challenge.

Judges have heard that the woman, who is in her twenties and 22 weeks pregnant, has the mental age of a child aged between six and nine.

They were told that she had been diagnosed with a “moderately severe” learning disorder and a mood disorder.

Lawyer Laura Hobey-Hamsher, who represented the woman’s mother, said the woman has already chosen a name.

“There is no question that the questions faced in this case are some of the most difficult faced by judges,” said Ms Hobey-Hamsher, who works for law firm Bindmans.

“Ultimately, the Court of Appeal disagreed with the analysis previously carried out, and the woman at the heart of all of this will now be able to meet the baby, who she has already named.”

She went on: “All of those involved in her care can put the past behind them and turn their attention to where it is needed most: The pregnancy, and the safe delivery of a healthy baby.”

Mrs Justice Lieven had initially analysed the case at a hearing at the Court of Protection, where issues relating to people who lack the mental capacity to make decisions are considered, in…

‘Why Should Families Have to Have a Child with a Severe Disability?’: CNN Host Pushes Back against Discriminatory Abortion Ban

‘Why Should Families Have to Have a Child with a Severe Disability?’: CNN Host Pushes Back against Discriminatory Abortion Ban

In an on-air interview, a CNN host questioned the Indiana attorney general on why families should not be allowed to abort children with severe disabilities.

“Why, why would you want a family to have to have a child with a severe disability?” Alisyn Camerota, anchor of CNN’s morning show New Day asked attorney general Curtis Hill, according to Life Site News. The interview came in light of the U.S. Supreme Court overturning part of a 2016 Indiana law made by the general assembly that banned abortions based off of race, sex, or disability.

“Well, the issue that the general assembly faced was not with regard to the question you pose,” Hill defended the bill that was overturned. “It’s the question of the rights and consideration of the unborn child in terms of discriminatory actions of eliminating that opportunity at life.”

“Making a decision based solely on race or disability certainly is a discriminatory practice,” he continued. “And no decision in terms of whether or not to have a child should be based on that solely. And that’s what the general assembly chose to do in its ban.”

The host rebutted, saying that many abortions currently occur because of “severe abnormalities of a fetus.” She questioned why anyone would want to take that choice away from a family.

“Well, it’s not…

Christians join thousands of climate change demonstrators to march on parliament to demand action

The protesters at ‘The Time is Now Rally’ set off their alarm clocks as a message to MPs.

Former Archbishop of Canterbury Lord Rowan Williams said his faith underpins his environmental concerns.

“We’re told to see our material environment as part of the way God communicates with us,” he said.

“As Christians we believe in a God who actually works in flesh and blood – in the life of Jesus. So all of those things for me make it a real theological imperative.”

The mass protest has been organised by the Climate Coalition and Greener UK, whose members include Catholic international development charity CAFOD.

CAFOD Director Christine Allen told attendees of an interfaith event at Church House on Wednesday: “This is our opportunity as people of faith to come together before we meet later with our MPs at this amazing gathering.

“We come as people united in faith, united in our relationships and united with our world.

“Humanity still has the ability to work together for our common…

Tyler Perry at the BET Awards: “God Will Prepare a Table for Me in the Presence of My Enemies”

Tyler Perry at the BET Awards: “God Will Prepare a Table for Me in the Presence of My Enemies”

Over the weekend, entertainer and producer Tyler Perry was awarded the “Ultimate Icon Award” at the BET Awards and gave credit to God for his success.

The comedian started his speech recalling childhood memories with his mom and her friends. When those women were abused by the men in their lives, Perry found power in humor lifting their spirits. “My first ten movies were all about [my mom] subconsciously, wanting her to know, wanting black women to know ‘you’re worthy, you’re special, you’re powerful, you’re amazing,’” he said.

He also shared the impact of helping an elderly man cross the street as a child. The man sold candy at his school as his living and needed help walking across the six-lane intersection, but no one would help him. Perry later reflected how this experience deeply impacted him when he hired actors such as Taraji P. Henson, Viola Davis, and Idris Elba. “They couldn’t get jobs in this town but God blessed me to be in a position to be able to hire them,” he said. “I was trying to help somebody cross.”

Perry hopes his career is an inspiration for a younger black generation. “When I built my studio, I built it in a neighborhood that is one of the poorest black neighborhoods in Atlanta so that young black kids could see that a black man did that, and they can do it too,” he shared.

 “The…
