Life’s Purpose: Why It Really, Really Matters

Finding life’s meaning and purpose is a complete full circle in a person’s life. How to find it can be challenging, but a challenge that’s worthwhile that everyone should undertake at one point in their lives.

“Do you have a purpose in life?”

It’s a profound question that goes deep into the core of every person. This also raises the question of “do we really need to have a purpose in life?” or “how can we tell which purpose we are destined for?” In Dr. Julius Mosley II’s book Living Life With Blinders On, the author touches on life founded on God’s plan for mankind. The book gives a glimpse of how the author, at a young age, was already seeking the reason for his existence.

But why do people endeavor to search for their life’s purpose? What is it in finding life’s meaning that is so endearing to the point of being crucial that some people would invest their whole life in this search?

“A purpose-driven life”

People often get involved in the journey of finding their life’s meaning and purpose because of the “journey” itself, of the process of getting to the answers that sometimes seemed to be elusive and hidden. Rather than the result, it is the idea that the road towards the goal of discovering life’s purpose is worthwhile to be trodden upon. This is how the concept of a “purpose-driven life” came to be.

Life by itself is already complicated enough. With all the mix and jumble of problems coming from all directions, it’s hard to think and see through the chaos. Most of the time, people get lost and forget why they do what they do. Without a clear and unshakeable purpose and reason, it’s easy to fall prey to confusion and anxiety — a road that could shake up one’s overall well-being.

That’s the importance of discovering life’s purpose. That purpose would serve as a beacon even on the person’s darkest nights. It would help them pull through, stay focused and consistent, and achieve that goal they have set out for.

How to find your life’s purpose

Finding one’s life purpose can be challenging because a lot of thought processes go into the search. This process is not a one-size-fits-all. After all, each individual is unique, with a unique set of profile and demographics, unique goals and aspirations, and a unique set of dreams. And a life’s purpose is often tied up to a personal goal.

Here are some tips that can start people off on the search to finding their life’s meaning or purpose.

Focus on your passion

It all starts with that simple spark of interest. It begins with igniting a passion. The search for one’s meaning and purpose in life is connected to what they are passionate about in reality. Focusing on that passion is a good step towards self-discovery. The person should have a clear understanding and awareness of what they love doing and whom they love in their life. How strong and passionate a person is about their interest will serve them well when faced with obstacles and will keep them focused, consistent, and motivated throughout the journey of self-discovery.

Discover a community

Be with like-minded people. One of the reasons why a community that shares the same passion and interest is essential in the search for life’s purpose is that this group will help keep a person inspired and motivated, not to mention relaxed and at ease with themselves. These people can be the supporting factor that enables a person to take every step moving forward. Since they all share the same interests, it’s easy for them to help propel and pull each other towards their individual goals.

Embrace gratitude like a second-skin

Journeying towards finding life’s purpose entails that the person should have the right mindset to keep them grounded throughout the journey. Practicing gratitude is one of the best practices that can hold a person focused on their goal of finding that sense of purpose. Cultivating a thankful and appreciative attitude can lead to acts of generosity and kindness and even propagate positive thoughts and feelings towards oneself – all of which are instrumental and effective for self-discovery.

Be flexible and open to feedback

“No man is an island.” This adage applies to the self-discovery process. An essential key in the journey to oneself is personal growth. Personal growth means developing a person to become a better version of themselves. This process requires being flexible and open to criticism and feedback. Every bit of feedback is needed so that the person can identify in themselves what are their strengths and weaknesses. Because discovering one’s purpose in life is being open to all possibilities that can make one whole and complete as a person.

Finding life’s purpose, albeit challenging, should not be an impossible thing to do. The road may not always be smooth and perfect, and people would probably get knocked off the course now and then. But then again, it’s that first step that’s always difficult, and it’s that first step that matters in the process. Taking that step shows a person’s determination to discover their life meaning. That life-purpose-discovery process is what really, really matters in the end.

Seeking ‘CLARITY’ on Sexual Sin

See How well CRC Synod did with this ‘challenging conversation’?

“There are two deeply divergent interpretations of Scripture in this denomination,” Paul VanderKlay said on June 14, addressing 188 delegates of the Christian Reformed Church (CRC). To most CRC members, the degree of that difference is painfully clear, and it was only accentuated at this year’s annual meeting.

Synod 2022 made three key decisions concerning its LGBTQ members and allies. First, delegates established the Human Sexuality Report (HSR) as a resource for churches, including its traditional position on marriage. Second, Synod made that stance confessional by adding “homosexual sex” to the list of sins that break the seventh commandment as outlined in the Heidelberg Catechism. Third, Synod voted that Neland Avenue CRC must reverse its decision to ordain a deacon in a same-sex marriage. Each of these votes split along similar lines – roughly 70 percent for and 30 percent against. Proportionately, more Canadians were in the second group.

Here’s what I noticed, watching the webcast on a 20-minute delay with almost 1,000 other people; the stakes were high. The “Rules for Synodical Procedure” came into play often. To save time, stories were not allowed. It was hard to spot female delegates; in fact, they made up just 17 percent of the gathering, the lowest in seven years. And no middle ground was made available – just two starkly different options for the future of the CRC.

At times, the debate seemed to mirror our culture wars. Imagine how the week might have gone if restorative practices had been applied instead of Yes/No votes. Now that Synod 2022 is over, can we gain any insight into the process by applying the lens of the Challenging Conversations Toolkit, which Synod itself urged churches to use?

UNDERTONES

Before starting any conversation about human sexuality, the Toolkit says, ask this question: What are you anxious about? And there were definitely anxious undertones at the Synod mic. Delegates in support of the HSR were anxious about losing the traditional view of marriage, changing church doctrine, threatening the integrity of the gospel and the salvation of practicing same-sex members.

“Don’t depart from the Christian church in its long history,” Clay Campbell said. Other delegates were anxious about ambiguity, saying that confessional status will help pastors. “I speak in favour of this because it gives me clarity to walk alongside people in love in my community,” Jason Biu said.

Delegates against the HSR were anxious about exclusion, removing grace from the Reformed tradition, threatening the integrity of the gospel and causing harm to LGBTQ Christians.

“Young people are not seeking clarity,” Heidi Sytsema said. “They are seeking belonging, justice, validation that they are indeed image bearers of God. [The HSR] is a tone-deaf response. The clarity that you seek is not good fruit.”

There was also anxiety among CRC members across North America as Synod votes were tallied. Pastor Virginia Lettinga at Victoria CRC was asked, for example, whether an elder who disagreed with the HSR could remain in that position. “It’s not yet clear what the various decisions of Synod 2022 will mean for officer bearers in the CRC,” Lettinga said. “So don’t do anything quickly. Important Synodical decisions are rarely part of Church Order without being ratified by a later Synod. If, after the details are sorted out, you do feel compelled to resign, you will not be alone. So listen and pray a bit longer.”

PRECEDENT AND PEOPLE

The Challenging Conversations Toolkit also asks participants to examine their fears, which connect to values. What do you fear could go wrong? Well, there was no shortage of potential problematic outcomes articulated at Synod.

Some people fear the slippery slope effect. “If we don’t act now,” Daryl DeKlerk said, “we set the precedent that any church can change any aspect of doctrine.” Division and the fear of church splits came up several times. “I speak in favour,” Robert Van Zanen said, “even though I know that this will probably tear us apart. We have to stand up for the gospel.”

Other delegates fear the effect of these decisions on people: “This is closing a door on a community and will do irreparable harm,” Migael Randall said. “In the time I’ve been talking, five members of the LGBTQ community have attempted suicide.” John Vanderstoep was equally blunt: “This will damage any trust the church can barely muster.”

The Agenda for Synod 2022, including material from the past two deferred years, was over 1,300 pages. Agendas are helpful to focus discussion, but they also prioritize control and productivity. Restorative practices, on the other hand, emphasize relationships and create more middle ground.

Since the HSR was released, CRC churches have hosted 300 listening circles to discuss it, “many more” in Canadian churches than U.S. ones, according to a Banner article. The stated purpose of these circles is to “deepen the faith [of participants], clarify how we should live and give witness to the presence and power of God’s spirit at work among us.”
Were any of those goals met by Synod, a challenging conversation writ large? Did anyone change their mind, or start to think differently about these issues? Those questions are harder to answer, though the council chair at Neland Avenue CRC Larry Louters said it’s unlikely.

After noting the divergent interpretations of Scripture in the CRC, VanderKlay tried to normalize it: “That’s part of what happens in the church over time. What we’re doing tonight is productive. It is hard. We will get through this.” Read more …

Census shows much decline in those identifying as Christians in England and Wales

Recent census result reveals that England is no longer a majority-Christian country and according to the Guardian newspaper, this has sparked calls for an end to the church’s role in parliament and schools.

Premier Christianity news also reported that “the proportion of people in England and Wales calling themselves Christian has dropped below half for the first time. The 2021 census data, released on Tuesday, suggests a huge increase in the number of people that do not identify as religious, compared to a decade ago.

Just 46.2 per cent of people consider themselves to be part of the Christian faith – in 2011, the figure was 59.3 per cent. Around 37.2 per cent said they had no religion at all, up by a quarter from the last results.”

For An Appointed Time

MEMORISE: “For the vision is yet for an appointed time, but at the end it shall speak, and not lie: though it tarry, wait for it; because it will surely come, it will not tarry.” – Habakkuk 2:3 (KJV)

READ: Habakkuk 2:2-4 (KJV)

2 And the Lord answered me, and said, Write the vision, and make it plain upon tables, that he may run that readeth it.

3 For the vision is yet for an appointed time, but at the end it shall speak, and not lie: though it tarry, wait for it; because it will surely come, it will not tarry.

4 Behold, his soul which is lifted up is not upright in him: but the just shall live by his faith.

BIBLE IN ONE YEAR: Exodus 35-37

MESSAGE:

The Bible says in Proverbs 13:12, “Hope deferred maketh the heart sick: but when the desire cometh, it is a tree of life.” You may have really been hoping for something, but have not gotten it yet and your heart is beginning to feel sick. Beloved, summon up strength and keep hope alive. Habakkuk 2:3 says that every vision Is for an appointed time. Your appointed time will soon come in the name of Jesus.

While waiting for their appointed time, many people do things that put a dent in their testimonies. In Genesis 16:2, Sarah asked Abraham to have an extra marital affair with her maid so that the young girl could have a child for him. Sarah gave up hope and compromised. She later regretted it when her appointed time came and she now had her own child. In Genesis 21:10, she told Abraham to send the maid away with her son. Beyond that, I’m sure when she looks down from heaven now and sees some of the seeds of that maid attacking her own seeds, she would wish she had kept hope alive.

While waiting for your appointed time, just ensure that you are obeying every instruction of God to the letter, whether it makes sense or not. Many years ago, we were offered the chance to buy all 40 acres of a serene campground called the “Youth Camp”, for N100,000.
That was a lot of money back then. I gathered my people together and we prayed quoting the Scripture:

Every place that the sole of your foot shall tread upon, that have I given unto you, as I said unto Moses. – Joshua 1:3

We put off our shoes and walked round that camp ground praying and confessing that it was ours, by faith. Not long afterwards, another ministry heard that the property was available for sale and they promptly paid for it. Our hopes were dashed, but I encouraged myself in the Lord and kept hope alive. Before long, God led us to where the Redemption Camp is situated, though then it was notorious for being a home for highway robbers and big snakes. We trusted in the Lord and purchased the first parcel of land that has grown to become Redemption City today. The Redemption City now sits on an expanse of land far greater than what we had earlier wanted to purchase. Thank God that we kept hope alive for our appointed time.

KEY POINT:

Your appointed time is coming; don’t give up

Lawyer and family denied access to imprisoned Christian

The lawyer and family of a Christian accused of blasphemy have been prevented from seeing him in prison.

Ishtiaq Saleem was arrested on blasphemy charges in Islamabad on 29 November 2022 and is being held in Adiala Prison, Rawalpindi.

The Christian healthcare worker was accused of getting a tattoo of the name of the Prophet Muhammad and sharing blasphemous content on social media.

His wife, Ghazal, said he was arrested outside the family home and that the police verbally abused him.

The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) registered a First Information Report against Saleem under Section 295-C which makes disrespecting Prophet Muhammad punishable by death.

He was also charged under Section 295-B, which carries a life sentence for defiling the Quran, and Section 295-A, which makes offending religious feelings punishable by up to 10 years in prison.

A further charge was filed against Saleem under Section 298-A, which criminalises defiling the names of Muhammad’s wives and family members.

Ghazal said her husband is illiterate and that the pictures and words he is accused of sharing on social media are in Arabic, which he does not know.

The accusation has plunged Saleem’s family into financial hardship.

“We have got a son of age below two years old, and it has become difficult to make both ends meet for survival,” said Ghazal.

“My tears don’t stop, and my family is living in constant fear and trauma ever since this unfortunate episode occurred in our lives.”

Saleem’s father, Saleem Masih, said his son had been working for the last four months as a sanitary worker in the city but never received any pay.

The family are calling on lawmakers and officials to intervene so that they can visit Saleem in prison and that he can have access to his lawyer.

Masih has also asked the Christian community to pray for the quick release of his son and for justice to be done.

Zion Christian Mission Center Produces 100,000 Graduates, the Most of Any Theology School in the World

Zion Christian Mission Center, a Bible education institution from Shincheonji, Church of Jesus, held its Class 113 graduation ceremony at Daegu Stadium on November 20. A total of 106,186 students graduated, making it the largest graduation of any theological institution in the world.

The number of people participating in the graduation ceremony in person in Korea was limited to 80,000 for safety reasons. But over 300,000 people worldwide participated in the ceremony online through the live broadcast in 9 languages.

The event consisted of an opening and closing ceremony, special performances, the awarding of certificates, and a commemorative speech by Shincheonji Church Chairman Lee Man-hee.

Among the graduates of Class 113, a total of 522 pastors — 37 domestic and 485 overseas — graduated. Offering the introductory, intermediate and advanced curriculum online via YouTube during the COVID-19 pandemic resulted in an increase in the number of pastors and seminary students who could participate. Two representatives of the graduates who shared their testimonies during the graduation were pastors.

“I only learned traditional theology at the seminary, but I didn’t know much about the Book of Revelation. I taught words that were easy to preach to the saints and left out the difficult ones. I repent for I was a sinner who added and took away from God’s word,” said Mr. Heo Jeong Wook, a second-generation minister who presented his testimony at the graduation ceremony.

Mr. Wook added, “I put down everything that I had and I came out to the truth. I am graduating after learning the true theology that leads to heaven and not the teachings of man. I thank God who has given me this chance of life.”

The representative of the overseas graduates was Mr. D. Jackson, a priest in India. After taking an online Bible class with Shincheonji Church of Jesus in October 2021, he signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) and changed the name of the seminary he was operating to Hepto Zion Christian Mission Center. Currently, 294 members, including pastors in charge of two churches belonging to the denomination, completed all courses at the Zion Christian Mission Center and graduated.

In 2019, the mission center graduated 103,764 students. Despite the pandemic, about 20,000 students graduated in 2020 and in 2021.
