Ted Cruz: His Record on Defending Religious Freedom

Speaking on a conservative radio talk show on Monday, the father of 2016 presidential candidate Ted Cruz explained how God helped his son and the pastors of Houston fight back against Houston Mayor Annise Parker’s subpoena of five pastors’ sermons relating to the city’s transgender bathroom ordinance.

Christian Post Report – In discussing how federal, state and local governments are continuing to infringe upon religious speech and expression related to traditional marriage, Rafael Cruz told conservative radio host Joe Miller that more pastors and clergy need to take a bold stand against governments’ attempts to limit religious freedom and urged religious leaders to fight to protect their “inalienable” rights.

As an example of how effective the church can be in leading protests in the public square, Cruz mentioned how religious leaders in Houston gathered at First Baptist Church after Houston Mayor Annise Parker subpoenaed the sermons of five pastors who were at the forefront of leading the petition against the city’s transgender bathroom ordinance last October.

MacBook Retina 2015 vs. Microsoft Surface Pro 4: Can Microsoft Topple Apple in the Ultraportable Device Category?

YouTube Screengrab: The MacBook Air and Microsoft Surface Pro 3 compared in this video

Christian Post Report – It’s been two weeks already since the new MacBook 2015 was announced, and yet there is still a lot of buzz surrounding the new ultraportable laptop from Apple.

Speaking of ultraportable, another upcoming device that has been under the radar of tech enthusiasts for months is the Microsoft Surface Pro 4. Last year, the Redmond, Wash.-based manufacturer developed the great device with the Surface Pro 3. It enabled users to seamlessly transfer from working on a tablet to a laptop.

This time around, Microsoft will certainly bring its A-game to the table in order to beat the new MacBook.

According to a report by Yibada, the upcoming device is rumored to come in two versions – a 12-inch and 14-inch model — in order to compete with Apple’s other MacBooks.

Remember, the Cupertino manufacturer also launched new versions of its MacBook Air and Pro, so Microsoft thought of another version to provide users some alternatives.

In the report, the Microsoft tablet will boast a 2160 x 1440 resolution for both versions of the device. This will directly rival the new MacBook’s Retina display.

Based on previous rumors, the upcoming device will run on an Intel Core M Broadwell chipset as well, like the Macbook 2015.

However, a report indicated that the Intel Core M chip that will run on the Surface Pro 4 will be a newer and potentially better and faster version.

In spite all of these rumors, the battle between the Microsoft Surface Pro 4 and the MacBook 2015 will boil down to buyer preferences.

Consumers who prefer a traditional laptop notebook might stick with the ultra-thin MacBook, while those who love using the touch screens of tablets may find the Surface interesting.

People from the Christian community attend a protest to condemn suicide bombings which took place outside two churches in Lahore, March 16, 2015. Suicide bombings outside two churches in Lahore killed 14 people and wounded nearly 80 others during services on Sunday in attacks claimed by a faction of the Pakistani Taliban.

Christian Post Report – Over 100 Christians have been arrested for the riots in Pakistan last week following a Taliban suicide attack on two churches that killed 17 people. Police forces have been arresting people who were part of the crowd that killed and burned two people suspected to be terrorists.

“We first established identity of the suspects through TV footages, still cameras and other relevant sources before laying hand on them,” a senior investigation officer said, according to The Hindu, confirming that more than 100 Christian protesters have been arrested.

Two suicide bomb blasts hit the Christ Church and Catholic Church of Youhanabad Christian Colony on March 15, killing 17 people. A Pakistani Taliban splinter group claimed responsibility for the attack, which left another 80 people injured.

Thousands of Christians rioted on the streets of Lahore following the attack, demanding better protection from the government. Reports said that two suspected terrorists were beaten to death and burned during the riots. The men were apparently in custody and were being shifted to a vehicle when the protesters got to them, beat them severely, tied them with a rope and set them on fire.

Fides News Agency reported that two Christians, Sohail Johnason and Yousaf Kamran, have been identified by the police as being responsible for the lynching. The two men were reportedly recorded on video shot with mobile phones by eyewitnesses to the beating.

Johnson is the founder and head of an NGO called Sharing Life Ministry Pakistan, which aims to help Christians in difficulty.

Political and religious leaders have condemned the killing of the two suspects, but also urged those that are innocent to be released.

“But now all the innocent people who have been stopped have to be released,” said Haroon Barkat Masih, head of the Masihi Foundation, which aids development projects for Christian minorities in Pakistan. “It is right to bring to justice the perpetrators, but everyone has to be treated in the same way.”

The foundation has filed applications for bail for a number of the Christians detained, but so far they have not been accepted by the authorities.

Christians, who make up only 2 percent of Pakistan’s population, have been the targets of persecution and have suffered a number of attacks for their faith.

Pakistani Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan suggested that the Taliban is targeting places of worship because military operations have pushed the terror group back.

“Due to military operation the noose has been tightening around militants and now it has significantly contained them,” Khan said following the church attack.

“They are now hitting the softest targets like churches, mosques and schools. It shows their frustration.”

1 in 4 Americans Don’t Believe in God; Lack of Trust in Local Churches Cited as a Reason Why Adults Are Leaving the Faith

Harvest America (Photo: The Christian Post)

Harvest America attendees make professions of faith in Jesus Christ after hearing pastor Greg Laurie share the Gospel with a sold-out crowd of 19,000 for Harvest America at the American Airlines Center and Victory Park in Dallas, Texas, Oct. 5, 2014.

Christian Post Report – Barna Group has released its 2015 study on the state of atheism in America, and has revealed that one in four unchurched adults in the country now identify as atheists or agnostics. The study also found that rejection of the Bible and lack of trust in the church are two main reasons why people are turning away from faith.

The study was focused on those who have not attended church within the past six months, and found that the majority of such people identify as non-practicing Christians. One in four, or 25 percent, however, were classed as skeptics, which Barna defines as people who “either do not believe God exists (atheists) or are not sure God exists, but are open to the possibility (agnostics).”

Of that number, nearly one-third said that they have never attended a Christian church service in their lives.

Barna found that the three main reasons people decide not to believe in God stem from rejection of the Bible; lack of trust in the local church; and the “cultural reinforcement of a secular worldview.”

“Skeptics dismiss the idea that the Bible is Holy or supernatural in any way. Two-thirds contend that it is simply a book of well-known stories and advice, written by humans and containing the same degree of authority and wisdom as any other self-help book,” the report said.

It added that the other one-third believe that the Bible is either a historical document that contains “the unique but not God-inspired accounts of events that happened in the past,” or do not really know what to make of the Bible.

David Kinnaman, president of Barna Group, said: “The data show that some cities — and younger generations — are more Gospel-resistant than others. It is increasingly common among millennials to dismiss religion, God, churches, authority and tradition. For years, some observers have claimed colleges and universities are a breeding ground for anti-God sentiment. The data does lend support to the notion that college campuses are comfortable places for young people to abandon God and assume control of their own lives.”

The group explained that today’s skeptics, much like their counterparts two decades ago, are defined by their denial and doubts about God’s existence. Their demographics have been changing considerably, however.

As other studies have also found, younger people are more likely to be skeptics than older people. Barna says that today, 34 percent of all skeptics are younger than 30.

The statistics also showed that half of all skeptics have a college degree, and that many more women today are joining their ranks — only 16 percent of skeptics in 1993 were women, but by 2013 that number grew to 43 percent.

Kinnaman added in his statement: “Figuring out how to effectively engage skeptics is difficult. One of the unexpected results we uncovered is the limited influence of personal relationships on skeptics. They are considerably less relational and less engaged in social activities than the average American. Christians for whom ‘ministry is about relationships’ may be disappointed when they find that many skeptics are not as enamored of relational bonds as are those who are already a part of church life.”

“But in giving his followers the Great Commission, Jesus didn’t mention anything about doing what is easy. New levels of courage and clarity will be required to connect beyond the Christianized majority.”

Barna reached out to 23,000 churched and unchurched adults for the study, and found that for each survey of 1,000 people, the estimated maximum sampling error was plus or minus 3.1 percent at the 95 percent confidence level.

Other polls, such as the 2014 General Social Survey conducted by NORC and the University of Chicago, which was released in March, also found that the number of Americans leaving organized religion is at a record high, at 21 percent.

The survey reported, however, that only 3 percent of the respondents to its poll are atheist, while 5 percent identified as agnostic, which is a notably lower number than Barna’s statistics.

Australia vs India Live Stream Free: Watch ICC World Cup 2015 Semi-Final Online (Start Time, Preview)

Australia will play India in the ICC World Cup 2015 semi-final on Thursday in a massive game as both teams look to claim a place in the final against New Zealand who defeated South Africa earlier this week. The game is scheduled to start at 3.30 a.m. GMT (11.30 p.m. ET Wednesday) and can be watched online through free live stream (details below).

India Cricket (Reuters)

Christian Post Report – Current World Cup title holders India must defeat the top ranked one day team today if they are to have the chance to defend their title in the final this weekend. However, Australia themselves are four times champions and will be desperate to progress to make it five World Cup wins this year at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

Australia captain Michael Clarke has said ahead of the game, “The fact we’re playing India now is extremely special. I think you’ll see two teams at the top of their game wanting to play their best cricket, I’m really confident both teams will put on a great show.”

Today’s game takes place at the Sydney Cricket Ground, a venue where Australia have lost one one of 14 one-day internationals against India.

However, India will be confident having had an amazing World Cup so far, and their bowling attack has become particularly dangerous to compliment their strong batting line up. They have been undefeated in this World Cup so far, and have looked like they could go all the way this year again.

The SCG should offer India’s spin bowlers help, although India are so confident in their bowling attack they believe with or without spin they can win.

Rohit Sharma has pointed out: “If you look at the tournament, we’ve taken 70 wickets in seven games, distributed between the spinners and the fast bowlers. So it doesn’t matter how the wicket behaves. If it suits the fast bowlers or the spinners, we’ve got everything covered in those two areas.”

He added, “We just need to keep doing what we’ve been doing. We’ve played some really good cricket in the World Cup and it’s just a matter of two more hurdles.”

NFL 2015 News: Martin Mayhew Admits He Bungled the 2011 NFL Draft

Martin Mayhew was once the protégé of Matt Millen, who is generally considered a bad NFL General Manger. Longtime suffering Detroit Lions fans were hopeful that Mayhew had learned the way to not run a football team, however, after almost eight years on the job, it is becoming increasingly clear Mayhew has many of the same defects that his former mentor had. Those defects stand out most notably in the NFL draft.

Martin Mayhew reuters.com

Christian Post Report – Martin Mayhew has made several misguided draft picks but even he admits to messing up the 2011 Detroit Lions draft class

When Ndamukong Suh and Nick Fairley left the team in free agency it wiped out the 2010 and 2011 draft classes for the team. At the NFL meetings this week in Phoenix Mayhew admitted that he was “over aggressive” in the 2011 draft. That class has been marred by gambles taken by the Lions that were destined to fail.

It seems like a good idea to draft Fairley to play next to Suh. However, in four NFL seasons Fairley has never lived up to his potential. It is hard to fault Mayhew for that. But his second round selection of WR Titus Young looked so much like a Millen move that it is hard to conceive that story ending up in a different way that it has. Another Lions high round draft pick was taken out of the league and is now facing a lengthy prison sentence.

Worse than that was the trade back up into the second round to draft RB Mikel Leshoure. The Lions traded away a third and a fourth round pick to take Leshoure and just three years later was buried on their depth chart. Four years later and he is out of the NFL entirely. That is three wasted draft picks that could have been used to infuse talent in the roster.

The Lions traded their sixth round pick hat year for Lawrence Jackson who is also out of the league and used their seventh round pick on Johnny Culbreath who they cut before he made his NFL debut. No other NFL team signed him.

Arizona Diamondbacks and Los Angeles Dodgers Renew Rivalry

There are not a lot of heated rivalries among sports teams anymore. Sure, there are the fans of one team that don’t really like the other team, but by and large, the truly heated rivalries have become a thing of the past. In an era of free agency where players move around from team to team, more it is hard to build a heated rivalry the likes of the Detroit Red Wings and Colorado Avalanche or the Oakland Raiders and Denver Broncos.

Christian Post Report – Los Angeles Dodgers at batting practice before their Opening Day MLB National League baseball game against the San Francisco Giants in Los Angeles, California March 31, 2011.

Baseball teams in the same division play each other 18 times a year, and the hope beyond ticket sales in both cities was a rekindling of the rivalry between divisional opponents. There has not been a lot of that but the Los Angeles Dodgers and Arizona Diamondbacks have certainly entered into a pretty heated rivalry.

In a Sprint Training game no less yesterday there were four batters hit by pitches and a number of ejections as the two teams from the National League West went at each other once again.

There has been bad blood brewing between these two teams for a few years now. The former regime in Arizona was pretty pro throwing at other players and that led to several on the field scuffles at least one with the benches clearing. With a new manager and GM in place in Arizona it would seem that things would cool off a bit but when a couple of payers are doing whatever they can to be noticed all bets are off.

Not to condone throwing at players or fighting in baseball, but it is these kinds of rivalries that make sports fun and it’s a shame in the free agent era we don’t see more of them.

Detroit Tigers Bullpen 2015 Preview, Review

Over the past few seasons the Achilles heel of the Detroit Tigers has been its bullpen. The team has relied on Bruce Rondon to fill a spot their the past two off seasons and that has failed to work out. They signed Joe Nathan to a two-year $20 million deal and that hasn’t gone as planned, and last year at the trading deadline they traded top prospects for Joakim Soria. That move has yet to pay off, even though the team picked up his contract option for 2015.

Bruce Rondon reuters.com

Christian Post Report – How much of an impact will Bruce Rondon have on the Detroit Tigers bullpen?

There are a lot of questions concerning the bullpen: which pitchers will have which roles, and which players will travel north with the team for Opening Day in two weeks?

It would appear that the right-handed spots are all but locked up. Nathan, Soria, along with Joba Chamberlain, Rondon and Al Albuquerque are virtual locks. That leaves promising prospect Angel Nesbit n the outside looking in.

“There’s not a lot of flexibility in the bullpen, but I wouldn’t say we’re locked in yet in terms of right-handers,” Tigers’ Manger Brad Ausmus said.

In terms of left-handers it would seem off-season acquisition Tom Gorzelanny has one of the two left-handed spots locked up. The Tigers let former left-handed specialist Phil Coke leave in free agency and it appears Gorzelanny will at least start the 2015 season with the big club. That leaves Ian Krol and converted starter Kyle Ryan battling for the last spot in the 2015 pen. Krol has issued four walks and Ryan gives the team the ability to last multiple innings, so Ryan might have the inside track on the job.

With that being said, and given the struggles of Nathan both last year and so far this spring, it would seem that the Tigers bullpen will see plenty of faces as the 2015 season unfolds.

Ray Rice NFL Return Latest News: Beleaguered Running Back May Wait a Long Time

It looks like Ray Rice will have to wait for awhile to get a second chance in the NFL. It would be nice to say that teams are staying away from the troubled RB on some moral grounds but as the Dallas Cowboys proved with the signing of Greg Hardy if there was a team that thought Rice could help them win they would sign him as fast as they can. However, at 28 years old and after a down season in 2013, it seems like most NFL teams do not think he is worth the trouble — salary cap and or public relations considerations certainly factor in.

Ray Rice reuters.com

Christian Post Report – Ray Rice might never get another chance in the NFL

Case in point are the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Jaguars have a rabid fan base in their market but have fallen from relevance nationally. They needed help at the running back position and a way to make a splash on the PR front. Signing Rice could have accomplished both, yet the Jaguars chose to go in a different direction.

The Jaguars had plenty of cap space to work a deal fro Rice, but they claimed Bernard Price off of waivers to help get over the disappointment of the Toby Gerhart free agent signing and to find someone to share the load with Denard Robinson. The Jaguars had been rumored to be after Demarco Murray, but once he became too expensive, Rice seemed like a viable alternate.

“In theory, that would also make it easier for the Jaguars to be the team that gives Ray Rice a second chance. And yet they haven’t, which underscores the reality that Ray Rice likely won’t be getting a second chance,” Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk wrote about Rice and the Jaguars. “With rosters at 90 per team and guys like Tim Tebow getting workouts, Rice continues to wait by a phone that likely will never ring.”

“It makes his decision not to attend the Veteran Combine even more baffling, since participation in a mass workout would give teams a chance to see what he currently can do without inviting the wrath that would accompany bringing him in for a private look-see,” he continued.

MLB 2015 News, Rumors: Plans to Play Exhibition Games in Cuba

Major League Baseball is getting set to play exhibition games against Cuba and possibly in Cuba in the very near future. New Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred has expressed optimism that his league could begin playing games in Cuba as early as 2016.

MLB MLB

Christian Post Report – MLB has announced a number of rules changes centered around the pace of play

Both the Boston Red Sox and Baltimore Orioles expressed interest in playing games there this spring. There is certainly a hot bed of baseball talent and many fans who will no doubt be overjoyed to see Cuban major leaguers who didn’t have to risk their lives to play in the MLB.

“To the extent that we can play a role in helping the United States government effectuate a change in policy, that we’re following their lead and we’re acting in a way that’s consistent with what they want us to do, that’s an honor for us,” Manfred told The Wall Street Journal.

There is a lot of baseball talent in Cuba and over the past decade or so we have seen some of that talent escape to the U.S. and score massive deals. Of course once relations are normalized more fully between the two countries, the MLB may have have to come up with a system to move Cuban talent from the Cuba leagues into its own. Of course, the players would like to see the current system remain in place, but at some point a draft of some sort for international players could become a necessity.

In the last round of collective bargaining talks, the MLBPA was not ready to accept an international draft. However, MLB teams do have $2.9 million to spend during the July International signing period. Once the Cuban talent market is truly open, that subject could be revisited.
