Church That Prayed to Resurrect Girl from the Dead Is Moving on with Memorial Service

Church That Prayed to Resurrect Girl from the Dead Is Moving on with Memorial Service

(RNS) — A Northern California church that had gathered to pray for the resurrection of one of its parishioners announced Friday (Dec. 20) that it would be moving on with memorial services for the two-year-old child, who died a week ago.

“Here is where we are: Olive hasn’t been raised. The breakthrough we have sought hasn’t come,” Bethel Church said in the statement. “And so, we are moving towards a memorial service and celebration of her life.”

“The joy of our faith is that, though we haven’t seen the miracle of Olive being raised, she is alive in the presence of God,” the statement read.

Further details about the memorial service are unavailable at this time, said Aaron Tesauro, a Bethel spokesman.

Kalley Heiligenthal, a worship leader and songwriter for Bethel Music, announced on social media Sunday (Dec. 15) that her daughter, Olive Alayne, had stopped breathing and been pronounced dead. She publicly called for people to pray that her girl be resurrected.

The faithful heeded that call and gathered at Bethel Church in Northern California in the following days to worship and pray for Olive’s resurrection. Supporters of Heiligenthal spread the hashtags #wakeupolive and #victoriousawakening across social media and described their prayers as radical worship and a spiritual awakening.

The church, in the statement, noted that seeking a miracle from God to raise her from the…

Christian Mother in Uganda Loses Marriage for Turning to Christ

Christian Mother in Uganda Loses Marriage for Turning to Christ

NAIROBI, Kenya, December 23, 2019 (Morning Star News) – When Florence Namuyiga’s Muslim husband asked her why their 7-year-old son was singing Christian songs, she remained silent.

Namuyiga, a 27-year-old mother of three in central Uganda’s Lwebitati village, Kitumbi Parish in Mubende District, had been secretly attending church services with her 2- and 5-year-old sons since putting her faith in Christ on May 17. She had not chanced taking her 7-year-old son until Nov. 24.

“That evening, while back at home, my son began singing some of the Christian songs that were sung in the church,” she told Morning Star News by phone. “My husband began questioning me where the son picked such kinds of songs, but I kept quiet. He then turned to our son, who narrated what he saw in church of both men and women worshipping together in one big hall. Thereafter we went to bed with no communication with my husband.”

On Nov. 29 her husband, 34-year-old Abudalah Nsubuga, told her she had to go to Friday mosque prayers, she said.

“I refused,” she said. “He started beating me up with sticks, blows and kicks. When I fell down, he left me and went to the mosque. I began bleeding with serious injury on my left arm. That evening he did not come to the house but slept in the house of one of my co-wives.”

Early on the morning of Nov. 30, he showed up at their home, she said.

“He arrived and…

How Charles Schulz Fought for Jesus in A Charlie Brown Christmas

How Charles Schulz Fought for Jesus in A Charlie Brown Christmas

More than 50 years after it first aired, A Charlie Brown Christmas remains one of the most beloved TV specials of the season among people of faith, primarily due to Linus’ bold recitation of the gospel message.

But that famous scene was added to the special over the objections of the producer and the animator, who believed that Peanuts creator Charles M. Schulz had crossed a line in wanting Linus to recite the Bible.

The special first aired in 1965.

Producer Lee Mendelson recounted the controversy in author Charles Solomon’s 2012 book, The Art and Making of Peanuts Animation.

“I said, ‘Sparky, this is religion. It just doesn’t go in a cartoon,’” Mendelson said, referencing Schulz’s nickname and the debate over the scene. “He looked at me very coldly and said, ‘Bill, if we don’t do it, who will? We can do it.’ He was right. That’s been the most commented-on little sequences of that show – Linus telling the true meaning of Christmas. But every time I see that scene, I wince. It’s such poor animation, such bad drawing.”

Mendelson later told the Huffington Post, “When [Schulz] said, ‘You know, we’re going to have Linus read from the Bible,’ Bill and I looked at each other and said, ‘Uh oh, that doesn’t sound very good,’ But then Schulz said, ‘Look, if we’re going to do this, we should talk about what Christmas is all about, not just do a…

Kanye West’s new album and free Christmas meals: Experiencing the hope of Christmas

Yesterday was filled with hopeful Christmas news. For example, Kanye West released his latest album, Jesus Is Born. Whether you like his music or not, it is encouraging to note the popularity of his gospel recordings.

Here’s another hopeful Christmas story: anyone who visited O’ Brien’s Southern Diner in Ashland City, Tennessee, yesterday received a free meal. Owner Candice O’Brien Beasley has now given away free meals on Christmas for seven straight years. She is especially concerned about those who would otherwise be alone on Christmas.

And for those who ate too much at O’Brien’s Southern Diner or anywhere else: a new study reports that drinking four cups of coffee daily could reduce weight gain from a diet high in fat and sugar.

This Christmas week, we’ve been asking what Christmas can teach our post-Christian culture about Christ. On Monday, we focused on the power of Christmas. On Tuesday, we considered the humility of Christmas. Yesterday, we explored the grace of Christmas for our past. Today we’ll celebrate the hope of Christmas for our future.

What about tomorrow worries you today? Where do you most need the hope of Christmas?

The timing of hope

Why was Jesus born when he was born? Why not when the Jews were fighting to escape Egyptian slavery or the Babylonians were destroying the temple in Jerusalem? Why did he come when he did?

Jesus was born during one of the darkest periods in human history. The Roman Empire brought moral depravity on an unprecedented scale. All manner of sexual perversion was rampant; pagan gods were venerated and emperors were worshiped. Those perceived to be a threat to the Empire were eliminated. In fact, more than a million Christians were martyred by Rome in the first centuries of the faith.

Here’s the point: if Jesus would come where he did, when he did, he will come any time to anyone.

Frederick Buechner: “Those who believe in God can never in a…

Here’s How to Watch the Last Solar Eclipse of the Decade on Thursday – Urban Christian News

The last solar eclipse of 2019 – and of the decade – is set to take place Thursday when some parts of the world will be able to witness a rare “ring of fire.”

Many countries in Asia and parts of Africa and Australia will experience a partial solar eclipse, but only some – Saudi Arabia, Oman, southern India and parts of Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines – will experience a “ring of fire,” according to Timeanddate.com.

The eclipse will begin Wednesday at 9:23 p.m. EST (2:23 a.m. GMT) and end Thursday, Dec. 26 at 3:05 a.m. EST (8:05 a.m. GMT)

What is a ‘ring of fire’ eclipse?
Also known as an annular solar eclipse, the celestial event takes place when a new moon does not cover the sun entirely, leaving a ring of sunlight around the moon. In a total solar eclipse, the moon completely blocks the sun.

The phenomenon occurs when the new moon is at apogee, explains Timeanddate.com, or when the moon is near its farthest point from Earth, allowing the sun’s edge to be exposed.

The “ring of fire” eclipse will last for just under four minutes, according to Travel and Leisure.

How a kindergartner is changing the world: Experiencing the grace of Christmas

Katelynn Hardee is a kindergartner in Vista, California. She is also a hero to 123 students at her elementary school.

Katelynn overheard a parent say she was having difficulty paying for an after-school program. Her mother explained that “sometimes people aren’t as fortunate and that we need to try to be kind and give when we can.”

So Katelynn decided to set up a stand to sell hot cocoa, cider, and cookies. She donated the money she collected, which went toward paying off the negative lunch balances of students at her school. As a result, according to the school’s principal, “other students are already talking about ways they can also make a difference.”

This Christmas week, we’re asking what Christmas can teach our post-Christian culture about Christ. On Monday, we focused on the power of Christmas; yesterday, we considered the humility of Christmas. Today we’ll explore the grace of Christmas.

If a child can change the world, anyone can change the world. Our past is no barrier to God’s future. How we begin the race is not as important as how we finish.

What in your past bothers you today? What guilt or burdens are on your heart? Let’s find God’s Christmas grace wherever we need his grace the most.

Why the Army–Navy game is so unique

The book of Revelation describes Jesus as “the Lamb who was slain from the creation of the world” (13:8 NIV). 1 Peter 1 points to “the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot” (v. 19) and says that “he was foreknown before the foundation of the world” (v. 20).

In other words, before God made the world, his Son was already a sacrificial lamb for the sins of the world.

Romans 5:8 makes this fact plain: “God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” “While we were still sinners”—before we had done one thing to earn…

As 2019 draws to a close, it’s important to look back at the past year with feelings of gratitude. Before we storm headfirst into the new goals, aspirations and resolutions – it’s necessary to cherish the special moments we’ve had and the people we’ve shared them with. Friends.Without them, life just wouldn’t be the same.

That’s the pure and simple message of Kossi Bruno’s newest release ‘A Friend’. An ode to the people who’ve stood with us through thick and thin. To the friends who supported us in our lows and celebrated us in our highs. To the ones who’ve been there when we had no one else. This song is for them.

The heartfelt track is undoubtedly relatable and carries a message that should be shared with everyone we love. The strikingly smooth melody, paired with feel good vibes and the warm lyrics of the song, makes uscertain you’ll be singing along with Kossi well into the New Year.

In the age of ‘no new friends’, it’s time we changed the narrative and championed positivity even further. Let’s nurture friendships and genuine connections.Let’s unashamedly boast about the people we love and are grateful for.  ‘A Friend’ does just that… A beautiful song with a message that will transcend generations.

Beth Moore Urges Faith Leaders to Repent for a Myriad of Sins Including Nationalism, Abuse of Power

Beth Moore Urges Faith Leaders to Repent for a Myriad of Sins Including Nationalism, Abuse of Power

In a series of tweets last week, Christian leader and author Beth Moore decried the “increasingly amoral condition of our country” and pleaded with her fellow faith leaders to repent for the “sins of nationalism, racism, sexism, hatred, white supremacy, murder, our lying, our cheating, our bribing, our abuse of power, our bloodthirst, our greed.”

In the Twitter thread, which Moore posted the morning after President Trump was impeached by the House, Moore recalled her reaction to the 1992 election of former President Bill Clinton.

“In early November 1992, I stood in front of the TV watching the last of the election results, tears pouring down my face,” she wrote. “Our country had just elected Bill Clinton president. He was magnetic, brilliant, smooth and utterly immoral. I was a registered Democrat at that time.”

Then in 2016, Moore, lacking faith in either candidate “stood in front of a screen bereft of hope either way that our country was about to elect a president who was honorable.” She wrote, “For days to come, I muttered aloud almost daze-like, ‘Our country just elected Donald Trump president.’” Moore noted that in 2016 she was a registered Republican.
