How to make Jollof Rice
What it is: Not whatever the hell Jamie Oliver said it was. Jollof’s base ingredient is always rice, and “TPO” (tomato, pepper and onion) plus scotch bonnets. It’s customisable according to your preference: make it hotter than the sun, or as mild as a European’s palette (jk, but not really). Add mixed vegetables if you want (please don’t). Best enjoyed with piping hot dodo (see below) and a cold Supermalt.
Why it’s awesome: It’s pure, flavourful carbs, and tastes like God’s love. What’s not awesome about that?

The outcome of a recent survey concluded that we all like to enjoy our Jollof rice in different ways. Some prefer the traditional spicy taste with a characteristic smoky flavour imparted by the cast iron pots in which it has been cooked. Others like a moist and semi-mushy consistency while others prefer an al-dente style with the grains not sticking together.
The truth is, there is no perfect Jollof rice recipe because, based on this survey, perfection is very relative and is an individual thing. Life on Mars and ‘hornlike spikes’: Why Americans trust science over religion
Is there life on Mars?
NASA’s Curiosity rover found what the New York Times calls “startlingly high amounts of methane in the Martian air” last week. As the Times explains, this type of gas on Earth is “usually produced by living things.”
The mission’s controllers sent new instructions to the rover to follow up on the readings. When the results came back yesterday, the methane spike had disappeared.
In addition, a glowing object was photographed hovering just above the surface of Mars earlier this month. Whatever it was, it seemed to be moving quickly.
However, NASA notes that such images are seen nearly every week and “can be caused by cosmic-ray hits or sunlight glinting from rock surfaces.” And methane gas can be produced by geological forces that have no connection to biological life.
Are “hornlike spikes” caused by cell phones?
In other science news that turned out not to be news, the Washington Post recently reported that “young people are developing hornlike spikes at the back of their skulls.” The Post cites researchers who argued that such bone growth points to shifting body posture brought about by the use of modern technology.
Not so fast, according to the Smithsonian. Other scientists noted that these bone growths have been known for centuries; one stated that she has seen “plenty” of them “in the early Medieval skulls I’ve studied.” They noted that such growths can be genetic or occur through trauma.
Such stories remind us that science is not infallible. Experts can interpret the same evidence in widely different ways.
Nonetheless, according to Pew Research Center, 79 percent of Americans trust scientists. That’s a higher level of affirmation than for any other option except the military (80 percent). A Gallup poll released last week expanded these results, noting that 70 percent of people around the world say they trust scientists.

Queen hosting reception to celebrate UK faith groups
Representatives of different faiths and beliefs are among those invited to the event on Tuesday, including volunteers, community workers and people promoting social cohesion in their area.
The reception will recognise figures who have brought about positive change in their local neighbourhoods and celebrate work being done to support people of all ages and backgrounds.
This includes supporting young people to make positive life choices, bringing people together through cooking, providing food and clothing to the homeless, and supporting refugees and asylum seekers.
The Queen, as head of the nation and the Commonwealth, recognises and celebrates religious diversity in the UK.

Murder accused church warden pretended to be Christian to aid fraud, court told
PhD student Benjamin Field is accused of systematically targeting elderly and vulnerable people in order to become the beneficiary of their wills.
The son of a Baptist minister, Field is on trial alongside Martyn Smith, 32, for the murder of Peter Farquhar, 69, and conspiring to murder retired headmistress Ann Moore-Martin, 83.
Also in the dock is Field’s brother Tom, 24 – a Cambridge University graduate – who faces a single charge of fraud relating to Ms Moore-Martin.
Field admits deceiving Mr Farquhar and Miss Moore-Martin, who were neighbours in the village of Maids Moreton in Buckinghamshire, into believing he was in a relationship with them both.
During cross-examination at Oxford Crown Court on Monday, Field admitted that he is not a Christian and had only put on a performance of being religious to help his fraud.
Oliver Saxby QC, prosecuting, asked Field if he had only become a church warden in order to meet elderly people he could defraud.
Field replied: “My motivation in going to church was about manipulating Peter.”
Mr Saxby asked: “What faith promotes defrauding the elderly? Do you have any faith at all?”
“I believe in the idea of proof. I believe in the idea of some kind of a light in us. I wouldn’t get more dogmatic than that,” the defendant replied.
Mr Saxby said: “(Church) was a way of meeting potential targets. It’s as simple as that.”
