Ellie Goulding threatens to boycott Salvation Army benefit at Dallas Cowboys halftime show: The pervasive power of personal influence

British singer Ellie Goulding during a performance on the World of Rock in Rio 2019 stage, Sept. 27, 2019.

Ellie Goulding generated headlines yesterday with her announcement that she would boycott the Dallas Cowboys Thanksgiving halftime show unless the Salvation Army makes “a solid, committed pledge or donation to the LGBTQ community.”

The singer had agreed to perform at the nationally televised show. Then fans on Instagram accused the Salvation Army of discriminating against LGBTQ people and condemned her for supporting the organization.

She immediately made her announcement, adding that “supporting an anti-LGBTQ charity is clearly not something I would ever intentionally do. Thank you for drawing my attention to this.”

David Hudson, the Salvation Army’s National Commander, responded: “With an organization of our size and history, myths can perpetuate. An individual’s sexual or gender identity, religion, or lifestyle has no bearing on our willingness to provide service. We stand firmly behind our mission to meet human needs in His name without discrimination.”

Later in the day, the Salvation Army confirmed that Goulding would perform as planned. Hudson thanked the singer and her fans “for shedding light on misconceptions and encouraging others to learn the truth about The Salvation Army’s mission to serve all, without discrimination. We applaud her for taking the time to learn about the services we provide to the LGBTQ community.”

The Army’s campaign is now in its 129th year and brought in $142.7 million last year to help those in need.

The growing percentage of LGBTQ characters on TV

I have spoken at Salvation Army events and supported their work for years. Their service to those in need is both urgent and effective. However, the controversy sparked by Ellie Goulding’s announcement is not the focus of my article today.

Rather, I am concerned about the dramatic degree to which LGBTQ…

Christian group ups Bible giveaway for Kanye fans after massive demand

The charity announced on 30th October that it was giving away 1,000 free Bibles as Kanye West’s first Christian album Jesus is King released the week prior sparked many of Google searches about Christianity.

The American Bible Society has now said it has received 6,000 requests for the free Bibles, so it has now multiplied its giveaway offer and will continue to accept requests until 22nd November.

John Farquhar Plake, director of ministry intelligence at the American Bible Society, said in a statement to the Christian Post: “We couldn’t be more thrilled at this unexpected demand.

“When we saw Google searches for Kanye, Jesus, and Bible spike, we saw an opportunity – but we never could have dreamed that we’d get such an overwhelming response.

“Our hope is that these Bibles will allow Kanye fans to get to know the extraordinary person of Jesus, who inspires not just musicians, but millions of believers around the world.”

The program called “Bibles for Kanye Fans” is giving away copies of the Good News Translation for those who apply on American Bible Society’s website.

Antisemitism ‘neither human or Christian,’ says Pope Francis

The Pope said: “I would like to make a separate note. The Jewish people have suffered so much in history, they have been chased away, they too have been persecuted.

“In the last century we saw so many brutalities against the Jewish people, and we were all convinced that this was over. But today the habit of persecuting the Jews, brothers and sisters, is here reborn. This is neither human nor Christian.”

He continued: “The Jews are our brothers and should not be persecuted, understand?”

His comments come after a reported significant rise in antisemitic attacks in Italy, particularly online.

“Since the beginning of the year to the end of September, we recorded about 190 anti-Semitic incidents, about 70 per cent online,” according to Milan based Foundation Jewish Contemporary Documentation Centre. The total incidents for the whole of last year were 197 and 130 for 2017.

A recent survey by ComRes last year showed that antisemitic stereotypes were alive and well in Europe with more than a quarter of Europeans polled believing Jews had too much influence in business and finance.

Meanwhile, a third of Europeans in the poll said they knew just a little or nothing at all about the Holocaust, the mass murder of some six million Jews in lands controlled by Adolf Hitler’s Nazi regime in the 1930s and 1940s.

Christian women doubly vulnerable to persecution because of faith and gender, says trauma care expert

Tirham (whose name has been changed for security reasons), an Open Doors partner, provides counselling to women and girls who have been raped, kidnapped and/or used as sex slaves by Boko Haram fighters or Fulani militants. Many of them are specifically targeted for kidnapping because of their faith.

“So many things happen today that people outside Nigeria don’t really believe are happening, like many women being kidnapped, raped, some of them being killed. It’s clear to us but to the outside world it’s hidden,” Tirham said.

“Everywhere, people are attacked by armed robbers, kidnappers, Fulani militants and Boko Haram fighters. It feels like everybody is walking in a minefield and, at any moment, there might be an explosion. People carry hurt and wounds on their hearts and they need to be cared for.”

Tirham works with women who have suicidal thoughts because, after being freed by their kidnappers, they are often not accepted back by their families and communities. Without support, they cannot cope with the double trauma of being kidnapped and then rejected.

Tirham will testify to the stigma these women and girls face upon their return and share stories about how trauma care has helped survivors overcome this. She will also talk about the work Open Doors partners do to change the mind-set of husbands and communities from that of stigma to support.

The trauma care…

Child abuse linked to faiths believing in witchcraft on the rise

Abuse of children for reasons of faith or belief rose from 1,460 cases in 2016/17 to 1,950 cases in 2018/19 – an increase of 34 per cent.

The figures were published by the Local Government Association and are based on safeguarding assessment data from local authorities passed to the Department of Education.

Abuse can be driven by a belief the child is possessed by demons or the devil or is the reason for some misfortune to befall a family, or to terrorise the child into compliance when being trafficked.

The new figures also revealed the number of girls identified by social workers as either having had or being at risk of female genital mutilation (FGM) reached a high of 1,000 cases this year.

It is an increase of 6 per cent on the 940 cases in 2017/18.

A belief in witchcraft and the perpetuation of FGM can sometimes be linked, although experts emphasise this is by no means true in the majority of mutilation cases.

The National FGM Centre has been conducting research and providing education and training into faith-based abuse since its inception in 2015.

Leethen Bartholomew, the centre’s head, told the PA news agency: “We know [faith-based] abuse is often linked to when families experience some kind of misfortune – whether it is a child with a disability or parental mental health, or when some of these families experience exclusion because of poverty.

“They try to make…

Kanye West to Appear on Stage at Joel Osteen’s Houston Megachurch

Kanye West to Appear on Stage at Joel Osteen’s Houston Megachurch

Kayne West, the rapper-turned Christian who last month announced he would no longer release secular music, is scheduled to appear on stage this Sunday at televangelist Joel Osteen’s Houston megachurch.

According to TMZ, West will appear during the 11 a.m. service for a 20- to 30-minute conversation with Osteen, pastor of Lakewood Church, but will not perform.

“Our sources say Joel wants his congregation—which stands 45,000 strong—and his TV audience—which stands at 10 million in the U.S. alone—to hear how Kanye has overcome significant adversity in his life,” the entertainment website reported.

TMZ also said that West will bring his choir to Houston where he is expected to perform during the Sunday night service, but the church website lists Christian artist Tauren Wells as the special guest.

West’s appearance at Lakewood comes as the rapper is promoting his latest album, the gospel-themed “Jesus is King,” which released Oct. 25.

Since January, West has been hosting pop-up worship gatherings called “Sunday Service.” According to Vox, the services began as invite-only events for celebrities with participants required to sign non-disclosure agreements.

In April, however, the events became public after West took his Sunday Service to a prominent music festival in California’s Coachella Valley. Since then they have popped up all…

Franklin Graham Asks Americans to Pray for Trump as Impeachment Hearings Begin

Franklin Graham Asks Americans to Pray for Trump as Impeachment Hearings Begin

Franklin Graham is asking believers to pray for President Donald Trump as impeachment inquiry hearings begin.

“This is a sad day for America,” Mr. Graham said in a statement shared on social media. “Our politics in this country has hit a new low. Nancy Pelosi and her followers in Congress have weaponized the impeachment process. After two years of the Russia collusion hoax, now they’ve turned to this.”

“In my opinion, asking another country to investigate corruption is a good thing — not a bad thing. This is just another attempt to tarnish and embarrass the President before the next election. We have so many problems in this nation that need to be addressed. Instead, the Democrats are fixated on only one thing — removing President Donald J. Trump from office,” he added.

Graham’s post comes just as the impeachment hearings begin in Washington, where the inquiry will also be televised live.

Trump said on Twitter that the impeachment inquiry is the “single greatest scam in the history of American politics.”

Graham said in his post that he is praying for the president.

“Pray for President Trump today, for God to give him wisdom, protection, and guide each and every step he takes. I pray that he and Melania will sense the presence of the Lord through this unjust inquisition,” he said.

Graham previously showed his support…

Over 250 Rockets Are Fired at Israel from Gaza

Over 250 Rockets Are Fired at Israel from Gaza

In retaliation for a recent Israeli airstrike that killed a senior Islamic Jihad commander, more than 250 rockets were fired from the long-disputed Gaza strip into Israel as violence escalates in the region.

“They know we will continue to strike them without mercy,” Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said of the Iranian-backed Islamic Jihadist in Gaza, according to the Los Angeles Times. “They have one choice: either stop these attacks or absorb more and more blows.”

Israel’s airstrike killed Bahaa Abu el-Atta, who Netanyahu believes was the “mastermind” behind recent attacks against Israel, according to NBC News. The country does not intend to continue a confrontation in Gaza and has limited its strikes to Islamic Jihad, a militant Iranian-backed group. Their strikes have killed 18 Palestinians.

No Israelis have been killed in the conflict, largely due to Israel’s Iron Dome defense system, which has intercepted 90% of the projectiles. Forty-seven Israelis have been wounded. A few homes and a major highway were damaged.

“The barrage of rockets being fired by Islamic Jihad in #Gaza at Israeli civilians after our surgical strike on their commander shows exactly why he was targeted in the first place,” said the Israel Defense Forces on Twitter.

The US has stood beside Israel during the attacks.

“The United States condemns the barrage of rockets on Israeli civilians….

Christian Authors’ Newly Adopted Daughter Fights Cancer: ‘Will You Pray with Us?’

Christian Authors’ Newly Adopted Daughter Fights Cancer: ‘Will You Pray with Us?’

Christian authors Michael and Lauren McAfee recently adopted their daughter, Zion, from China. But, a month after her adoption, the toddler ended up in the hospital after doctors discovered a tumor in her liver, according to Faithwire.

“Talking child cancer treatment, meeting a dozen doctors, and waiting for so many test results…how was this my day today?” Lauren wrote in a Facebook post last week. “Yesterday morning, Michael and I were waking up expecting another normal day, going through our morning routine with Zion, making her eggs, and giggling at her overly expressive faces at breakfast. We had no idea that we would get a call from her doctor that afternoon and be sent straight to the ER to be admitted because a tumor had incidentally been found in some unrelated scheduled tests she had been through.

“We are still in shock and scared, and I don’t quite know what to say except that we are reminding ourselves of God’s promises and praying for healing. Will you pray with us?” Lauren asked.

The couple adopted Zion from China. In addition to being authors, Michael is the director of community initiative at the Museum of the Bible and Lauren works in the corporate offices of Hobby Lobby. After only a few days after Zion’s adoption, Lauren admitted how “natural it feels” being her mother.

“We’ve learned her routines, and…
